“Inferior older room”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 15, 2012

We were unable to reserve a room in the main lodge, so we were given room 5 attached to the grocery store building and adjacent to the guest laundry (which, thankfully, no one used). The room was very small and extremely basic: no chairs, no place to put luggage, no counter space in the bathroom, no towel racks, no AC (but two ceiling fans), no bathtub, no phone. The room had an old-fashioned TV and a large mini-fridge with freezer, as well as two queen beds. We paid only $49 but still felt dissatisfied; we would rather pay more and get a better room. We had nowhere to put our suitcase except on the floor. We also had noisy stairs overhead. The bed was comfortable. The shower head was good, but the shower curtain did not keep the bathroom floor from getting wet. The grounds were nice and the store was useful. There was no included breakfast, but we had inexpensive quiche at the deli inside the store. We had good Mexican food at a reasonable price at La Cueva on the way to Capitol Reef National Park.

Cabins are roomy, 2 bedrooms, living room, kitchen. Appreciated full fridge, coffee pot, sink. Kept provisions for hiking, breakfast, lunch at a great savings. Very clean. Beds very comfortable. Spoiled by having what felt like an apartment. A family of 4 or 2 couples would be very comfortable in a cabin. Torrey is very small, nice town. Warning, GPS directions send most people to another town to the west, Bicknell. Highway 24 between Richfield and Torrey is full of deer, watch out while driving, especially at night.

Austins Chuckwagon Lodge is a good option when visiting Capitol Reef National Park. It is clean and comfortable. My only complaint was the lack of a coffeemaker in the room. Though the deli/store on the premises serves complimentary hot coffee for guests, it opens only at 7 am. The breakfast frittatas we had from the deli were excellent, as was the walnut cranberry banana bread. I spent only a night there, but I would not hesitate to stay there again.

Austin's is a wonderful place to stay. It is more like a resort than a motel. Clean and quiet with a nice pool. The store right there was very handy for us and we ate at the reasonably priced little bakery every morning. We had a great stay.

Room Tip: For us we like the second floor for quiet.

Austin’s Chuckwagon was the perfect choice for our visit to Capitol Reef National Park. We spent 2 nights, and enjoyed comfortable beds, spacious room, and quiet surroundings with colorful potted flowers. After our scenic drives and hikes in the Park, a dip in the heated outdoor pool was very refreshing. The adjacent General Store had excellent rich coffee (free to guests), wonderful homemade rolls and pastries, friendly staff, and just about any practical item under the sun one might need for a stay in the area. We ordered salads and sandwiches to go for our days in the Park – fresh and generous portions. The store’s large beer selection was a little deceptive…it’s all “near beer,” but then this is Utah! The Torrey Gallery (paintings, sculpture, Navaho rugs) and a gift/souvenir shop are across the street for additional diversion.

We stayed here as it was close to Capitol Reef. Our room was clean and the water was hot in the shower. We were right next to the office and did have some noise in the morning from the office lady's little boy who was with her at work.
We were glad to have the mini fridge in the room. This hotel worked for one night as it was close to the park for hiking. I would not want to stay longer as the rooms are close to the parking area and there are chairs outside your window where other guests tended to gather to talk or talk on their cell phones.

Room Tip: Ask for s second floor room.
