Of the three hotels in Chinle, the Thunderbird Lodge is the oldest and most historic. Rooms are simple and meals are at a cafeteria. Showers were unreliable. The giftshop is extensive with a good selection of Navajo rugs. The setting under large trees in the countryside is the most pastoral. The Holiday Inn also has a nice setting and southwest-style architecture with the upgraded ammenities expected by travelers. The restaurant is surprisingly good. The gift shop is ordinary. The Best Western is right on the highway in "Downtown Chinle". I have not stayed or eaten there. Both the Thunderbird and Holiday Inn are within an easy hike to the Visitor's Center. All arrange jeep and truck trips into the canyon. Canyon de Chelly is a wonderful and beautiful experience. In spring the water in the canyon adds an element of fun and excitement to the excursion; in mid-October, the changing tree colors are beautiful. There are a few Navajo jewelry and pottery vendors in the Canyon but it does not diminish the experience.
