I met the owner of Eclipse at a local museum that was having a Chocolate Lovers exhibit. I tasted their chocolates and loved them and then went to their newly-opened bistro & bar a month later. I went with a friend for their Sunday brunch and was blown away just reading the menu (which changes seasonally). For $16 I had a homemade (not greasy) tamale with a tasty chocolate-based mole sauce, and a mushroom quinoa patty with a tomato and roasted red pepper topping and sea-salted avocado on the side. For $4.50 I ordered cup of a HEAVENLY drinking chocolate in a most wonderful flavor: rose cardamom. I'd go back just for that! Unlike some places where the drinking chocolate is thick and fudge-like, this is more like a hot cocoa drink, and it comes with homemade marshmallows which were better than I'd ever thought a marshmallow could be. For dessert (part of the $16 brunch) I had an apple cobbler with a burnt caramel sauce and a creamy topping and soft but crunch dough and bits of cheddar. It was just right!
My friend liked her food but complained a little more to the chef/waiter. She got the build-a-benedict main dish, and thought her eggs were a little too soft and could have been hotter. The owner took it back and made it hotter and she was somewhat happier.
The downside is that this place just opened and they are still getting things figured out. Service was slow. It took a half hour to get our drinks and an hour to get our food. I think once they get into their pace and routine, they will shine in these areas. I loved the made from scratch food and the amount of organic ingredients used and the gluten-free and vegan menu items. Be aware that they opened at 9am, and I got there at 9am. Within 20 minutes the place was filled. Get there early!
Cafe hours are spotty, so check ahead of time, they might change as they grow: Monday-Thursday 9am-10pm • Friday 9am-11pm • Saturday 9am-11pm • Sunday 9am-6pm
