“Made-from-scratch gourmet meets Willy Wonka...and rocks it!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 19, 2013

I met the owner of Eclipse at a local museum that was having a Chocolate Lovers exhibit. I tasted their chocolates and loved them and then went to their newly-opened bistro & bar a month later. I went with a friend for their Sunday brunch and was blown away just reading the menu (which changes seasonally). For $16 I had a homemade (not greasy) tamale with a tasty chocolate-based mole sauce, and a mushroom quinoa patty with a tomato and roasted red pepper topping and sea-salted avocado on the side. For $4.50 I ordered cup of a HEAVENLY drinking chocolate in a most wonderful flavor: rose cardamom. I'd go back just for that! Unlike some places where the drinking chocolate is thick and fudge-like, this is more like a hot cocoa drink, and it comes with homemade marshmallows which were better than I'd ever thought a marshmallow could be. For dessert (part of the $16 brunch) I had an apple cobbler with a burnt caramel sauce and a creamy topping and soft but crunch dough and bits of cheddar. It was just right!
My friend liked her food but complained a little more to the chef/waiter. She got the build-a-benedict main dish, and thought her eggs were a little too soft and could have been hotter. The owner took it back and made it hotter and she was somewhat happier.
The downside is that this place just opened and they are still getting things figured out. Service was slow. It took a half hour to get our drinks and an hour to get our food. I think once they get into their pace and routine, they will shine in these areas. I loved the made from scratch food and the amount of organic ingredients used and the gluten-free and vegan menu items. Be aware that they opened at 9am, and I got there at 9am. Within 20 minutes the place was filled. Get there early!

Cafe hours are spotty, so check ahead of time, they might change as they grow: Monday-Thursday 9am-10pm • Friday 9am-11pm • Saturday 9am-11pm • Sunday 9am-6pm

“Chocolate for lunch?”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 13, 2013

They have a great brunch menu but a very scant lunch menu - soup and panini's is about it. With that being said the carrot ginger soup and the smoked turkey panini was great. A few innovative salad selections would be a nice addition to the menu. The place just opened so I'm sure the menu will be enhanced. Now, the Chocolate. Yes, I could've had chocolate for lunch. So many types and all VERY different. You can eat it or drink it. Great coffees too. The place is a hit!

“drinking chocolate ftw”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 15, 2013

Eclipse Chocolat has drinking chocolate so rich that it can satisfy even the most profound chocolate cravings. Their drinking chocolate is not unlike max brenners or similar chocolatiers that offer such drinks. But Eclipse's come with fun flavors like lavender and sea salt. Their regular chocolate is also really good with some creative flavors like basil&mint, etc.

It seems like they offer good brunch deals. So that would be worth checking out as well. The cafe itself is small and cute, but not anything extraordinary. Go if you are craving some quality chocolate!

“Best coffee EVER!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 28, 2012 via mobile

The coffee is so good. The chocolate is just as yummy! The three days we were in SD, all we could think about was this place. It does open later, like 9:00 a.m. But worth the wait.

“Chocolate lovers unite!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2012

Their brunch on the weekends is super yummy. $14 for three choices off the menu (one main entree), or $16 for four. Choose from starters, desserts, or more. My sister and I split 4 which fed us perfectly, but for someone with a heartier appetite, go for your own plate. The chocolate here is to die for. I love the sea salt they add in. It gives it that sweet and savory combo. I wish the place was a little more "homey". The high ceilings and decor, plus the only windows being at the front, leave it feeling a little cold for such a feel good type of place. That's the only reason I gave it 4 stars....otherwise their food is 5 star worthy!
