I grew up less than a mile from this hotel, right in Mission Beach. My parents still live in the same house, so when my family of five comes to visit grandma and grandpa, this is typically our hotel of choice. We have stayed at other nearby hotels, including the Islandia right next door (which is quite nice), but this seems to provide the best combination of size and affordability.
Our first stay was in the old, original rooms. We have slept in some really run-down facilities in the far corners of the globe, so its tired decor and smaller quarters were really no big deal to us. For our next stay, though, they offered a pretty substantial discount (we ended up paying, I think, $99/night) for the newer bayview suites---the ones farthest west. Those rooms were really nice, with a great view, comfy beds, and plenty of space for us to spread out. The new rooms are not fancy by any stretch, but for a hundred bucks, they put you smack dab in the middle of one of the most desirable parts of San Diego. You can watch sailboats, see fireworks at Sea World, or simply walk across the bridge to one of the best beaches in San Diego.
The onsite restaurant, The Blue Pearl, is also worth noting. I can't speak to their dinners, but their breakfasts really are very good, certainly better than Denny's or similar.
I probably wouldn't pay rack rate for this hotel, but if you can get their discounted rate on the newer rooms, it's well worth it.
