“Well located, nice property”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 19, 2012

The Dana has an older section of rooms in various two story buildings, and also much newer sections. We stayed in the older section and I cannot address the new rooms, but they appear nicer and you might want to request them when booking. The older rooms have been redone, and are nice and clean, similar to a Holiday Inn. Large flat screen tv as shown on their website - and the pictures on their website appear accurate and representative. Very well located across from Sea World and near beaches. Several miles from downtown though, so a car is essential if you are staying here! Had two room problems, tub would not drain and problem with tv - maintenance came immediately and no need to call more than once, which shows good management. No problem in staying here again, but note it is not cheap, and there are less expensive places if Sea World and other matters are not important to your trip. No buffet or free breakfast of any kind.

Room Tip: Ask for the newer sections of the hotel, which have the best views.

We loved this hotel. Very central to Old Town, SeaWorld and Mission Beach. They were very friendly. The grounds were perfect, clean and right next to a Marina.
If you felt like walking you could walk about 20 minutes to the ocean where there are lots of bars and restaurants. Taxi ride is 10 to 20 bucks. Went to Saska’s for Steak House… GO THERE, absolute YUM.

They were very helpful. The bar is great! Their food was excellent and well priced. They do not over charge you for services and food.
I lost my camera and they bent over backwards to help find it. I was impressed.
Also note: The shuttle to SeaWorld has a 6:45PM and 10:45PM return. If you need to go back to the hotel between that time, you can call them and get a pickup.
The room was perfect; we had a room with a porch. Very nice. They made some mistakes here and there and it because they were so busy, but they took care of those mistakes right away and compensated for them. We loved it here and will definitely go back.

Room Tip: Get a room with a porch

I was traveling solo and was not expecting so many families. No quiet time to be had by the pool. Close proximaty to beaches, so all was not lost. Very nicely kept rooms. Clean. Views of the bay. Nice place for family vacationers.

Wonderful area to stay in..didn't have a car..used bus system which was great.....having car gives you lots of options. Scenic views of surrounding bays. Rooms were clean and comfortable. Nice view of fireworks from Seaworld EVERY night. Firefly restaurant served some of the best dinners we ate (after staying 5 nights at Marriott Marquis and Marina downtown) with John who was the best and most knowledgeable waiter we had all week.definetly recommend

Came to SD on a beer trip and this was a great location. Close to the Airport, Sea World (not that big a deal for me) Mission Bay, short drive to downtown seemed everywhere we needed to go was fairly close. Staff was very friendly and helpful always willing to accomadate any request. Parking was a bit of a "thing" although I can't complain too much, they waived the $18 parking fee, there was not space anywhere near our room. We had to park on the other side of the property and walk back to our room.

Room was very nice, we were on the 3rd floor overlooking the jogging path and the bay. Pillows were a bit soft, but everything was relatively newly renovated with top end finishes.

Would definitely be back.

Do not stay here if you aren't planning to go to sea world on the fre shuttle every single day with your 8 screaming kids in tow. That is the only reason anyone should stay here, esp for these rates. The place is a glorified Motel 6. Don't be fooled by the modern aesthetic and sleek furnishings in the lobby. That's where the updates end. The rooms are fine, but nothing special. If you are here for work, note that there is no desk/chair set up for work, or for reading, eating or anything. If you order room service or have leftovers, you will have to eat it in bed as there is nowhere else. There is a table by the window but no chair. When I asked for a chair, they brought me a cheap, plastic folding chair, though it was padded at least. Speaking of meals, the food here is abysmal. Really terrible. I had a food and beverage credit to use up so I ordered room service several times. The breakfast was the most passable, but don't even think about getting dinner. Plus the aggravation! If I am ordering a burger+fries, do I really have to specify that I'd like ketchup?! If I call in the evening to order breakfast for the next morning, can't you just take my order instead of insisting that I use the door tag, which you have to have brought up, since there are never any in my room? Do we have to do this every evening? Can't you please just leave a few breakfast order door tags in my room? Can you pls bring me my coffee and omelet in one trip instead of my having to call about it? As for the food itself, it’s what I imagine kids get when their parents take them to restaurants where “kids eat free.” Or maybe worse. I’ve never had the misfortune of being one of those kids. That is, until I stayed at this hotel. It is bland, overcooked, freezer burned, half-eaten (yes, imagine ordering fish sticks and getting one that is inexplicably cut in half!), and otherwise completely unpalatable.

Housekeeping- what you get: (1) trash removal (2) make the bed (3) fold bathroom towels. The mostly threadbare, used beach towels? Those will remain crumbled up on the floor. They will not be replaced, much less folded and tucked away. Those wet swimsuits drying in the shower? Those will end up on a pile of your things, whether they be your clean clothes, dirty clothes, shoes, laptop. God forbid they hang your damp swimsuit back up after cleaning up the bathroom. As for throwing them on top of your laptop and clean/dry clothes – totally careless and aggravating.

As you would expect, pool area gets pretty loud and raucous until late (sometimes 1130pm even though pool is supposed to close at 10??), even with the windows closed. If you want peace and quiet, ask for a room away from the 2 pools. Or better yet, stay elsewhere.

To add insult to injury, a $50 charge appeared on my credit card a few days after I checked out. After a week and a half of calling and leaving messages, I finally heard back from someone about the charge. Apparently the food and beverage credit does not cover tip, delivery and taxes. Even though these add significantly to the cost of the food, and are mandatory. Worst of all, it was never mentioned anywhere when I booked the hotel, confirmed the reservation, checked in, ordered food, signed for the food, that these fees would not be included. WTF! After a little arguing, they agreed to reverse the charge. What a pain!

There were many other instances of aggravation that I haven’t mentioned. But, to end on a positive note, there was plenty of parking, the paved path by the water is nice, the toiletries have a nice lemon scent, fridge in room, and .. that’s all. I would never stay here again. If you feel the proximity to sea world is all that you need and is worth the nuisance of dealing with this staff, do watch your bill for extra charges that happen to slip in.

I have been going to the Dana every summer for 6 years. The rooms facing the bay are so awesome-it's worth the extra price you pay. I love the walkway around the resort. The pool makes for a nice night time swim (the ocean for the day). I love going to their little store. The ladies that work there are so nice! I always buy too much. The Blue Pear is great for breakfast. Watching the fire works at night from Sea World makes the day end on a perfect note (and a drink from their poolside bar)!

Room Tip: Pay the extra for a bayside room. If you go in the off season, it will be a better price.
