“Nice place to stay in San Diego”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 25, 2008

We took the kids down to San Diego for a short end-of-summer trip. We stayed three nights at the Residence Inn - Central in a King Suite. This worked out well for us; the husband and I took the king bedroom downstairs, we put the 13 yr old in the loft upstairs (queen bed) and the 11 yr old in the pull out in the living room. It was nice that everyone had their own bed and there was enough room so that we weren't tripping over each other. There were TVs in both bedrooms and the living room.

The two full baths were great and there was a full kitchen. We really didn't use it, but it was nice to have a full sized 'fridge for sodas, juice and such.

Check in was fast and easy. The front desk staff seemed very knowledgeable about the area. They offer a buffet breakfast in the mornings, but we never took advantage of it.

Housekeeping was very good - even running and emptying the dishwasher. The parking was free (almost unheard of in a San Diego hotel!) and there was no charge for the internet. The internet connection was wired, but we brought a wireless router along and the husband and I were able to run our laptops at the same time.

The location isn't bad. The hotel is in an industrial area, but there are several family restaurants nearby (Denny's, IHOP, Islands) plus numerous fast food options. The local pizza place delivers to the hotel. We were about 6-7 miles away from the Zoo and SeaWorld, but we had a car so it wasn't a problem. I doubt it took more than 15 minutes to get anywhere.

Overall, a great stay. I would definitely recommend this hotel.

This is one of the older Residence Inns, however, it is well maintained and the staff is friendly and helpful. The suite was spacious and had everything we needed. The free breakfast was very good. I would recommend this hotel for longer stays because of its pod-like layout. There are maybe 15 different buildings each housing maybe 4 units. One thing to look out for: if you will have trouble carrying your suitcase, make sure to request a bottom-floor unit because I didn't see an elevator (although I could have missed it). Although this layout isn't ideal for a one-night stay; it would be convenient for a longer stay as you can go straight from your car into your suite, just like you would in an apartment.

We stayed at Residence INN San Diego Central during the last days of April for just two nights. We booked a two rooms two baths unit. It was reasonable. The hotel was not bad. Service was nice and friendly. Breakfast was fair. However, there was the same stuff all the days we stayed there. A major issue regards the cleanliness of the room, which is rather poor. The bathroom was almost unacceptable, with menstruation blood around the edge of the WC when we arrived. We also found some p… in the WC the day we arrived. We have never complained about this. We are not so good at speaking English, so we preferred to avoid complaining.
However, the location is rather good and, to me, safe. Not so far from the city center by car and enough close to major supermarket and mall. Everything you need was at reasonable walking distance or 2-3 min driving.

Trying to stay within the Marriott family and not wanting to pay for parking, we found the Residence Inn. I’ve never stayed at any of their other Residence Inns, so I was pleasantly surprised with what we got.

After an easy check-in, we got back into our car to drive to our unit. It was easily a studio apartment with a king bed, pull out sofa bed, full kitchen (with a large fridge, stove, and microwave), desk, and a bathroom. I didn’t expect the whole kitchen part, so that was a nice plus. They also had free internet access in the rooms. (At the front desk, they make you sign a waiver saying you won’t throw any ‘parties’ in the rooms. Just an FYI in case that’s what you’re thinking!)

They have free hot breakfasts from 7 am to 10 am on the weekends. I skipped Saturday morning, but the BF came back with bagels. On Sunday, they had other hot breakfast items available including tacos, waffles, yogurt, English muffins, bagels, granola, fresh fruit, etc. It's a pretty decent spread for breakfast. They also have other events going on throughout the week like happy hour that we didn’t get to check out.

We didn’t utilize the pool or the gym that’s open 24 hours.

The microwave popcorn and hot chocolate found in your room is a nice perk too. They even offer to do your grocery shopping for you for free! (You just pay for the groceries.)

My only real complaint was that we called the front desk to inquire about daily cleaning. Since it was after 12, we wanted to make sure they could still clean our room. They said that housekeeping would be coming by shortly. When we returned after 3, our room still had not been made up. We called the front desk again and they sent someone over right away. We had to sit around for half an hour while things were getting tidied and that affected our schedule a bit.

It’s located right off the freeway and very close to a choice of restaurants.

$127/night plus tax.

You can stop looking for a hotel in San Diego. This is the place to go. My sister and I looked on tripadvisor.com for about a month - reading reviews and making calls. We wanted a nice, clean, attractive hotel with amenities and free parking. By the way, free parking is almost impossible in San Diego at hotel properties. I loved the Residence Inn, San Deigo Central. Every single staff person was friendly and personable. They made sure that we felt that we were the most important people on the property. The beds were awesome - slept better there than I do at home. Free parking. Breakfast every morning - free. Hot entree, beer and wine every night for a little happy hour - just not on Friday's. Oh, did I mention - that's free too! If you need directions or ideas on what to do while in San Diego, just go to the front desk and they will gladly help you. The pool area is nice, clean, wonderful! There's also a hot tub if you like that. I am VERY picky about where I stay and so concerned about finding a clean room. Save yourself some time and just book your time here. This is the only place that I will stay when in San Diego from now on. My research certainly paid off. Oh, price - we paid $199.00 night - but got 10% off for senior cit. discount. My mom stayed in my room. So, that saved $20/night which brought the price down to $179.00!!! This is about the best price you're gonna find in SD. Things are expensive!!! PS: I do not work for the Residence Inn - this review is for real!!!

  • Liked — Clean, beautiful, centrally located, VERY comfortable beds and reasonably price
  • Disliked — Nothing - it was perfect for me

4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 24, 2008

We stayed at this Residence Inn for 4 nights in March 2008. It was a great experience. It was so good, that we will continue to use Residence Inns, even though our experience at the Garden Gate/Anaheim Residence Inn later that week was awful.

The San Diego Central hotel was clean, the staff was extremely welcoming and pleasant, the environment was friendly and inviting. This despite the fact that the hotel was fully booked that week, including an entire soccer team of 10-year old boys.

We were in building 12, overlooking the Shriner parking lot. It was very quiet, we never heard a noise from either the outside or from the adjoining rooms or buildings. We did have a problem with our refrigerator. It was very noisy. We had to turn it off at night because it would have kept us awake. However, we made one complaint to the front desk and they immediately sent a maintenance person to fix the fridge. When we returned to our room that night, there was a message asking us if the problem was fixed and offering to switch our room if we were not satisfied. Since we were not planning on storing any food, turning the thing off worked just as well for us.

Speaking of food, the breakfast was very good. There was plenty of it (even with the millions of kids at the hotel) and of decent quality. There was adequate seating, as they had a second room they opened during peak times, and the patio was also available. During the evenings, there was beer and wine, and good amounts of hearty snacks. A popcorn machine and coffee carafes were available throughout the day.

The room (we had the penthouse) worked very well for our family of 4. The 2 kids got the master suite, and then my husband and I had the run of the rest of the place once they went to bed. It was set up like a townhouse, with an open loft area with a queen size bed and full bath. I appreciated that even the living room had blackout curtains so we could sleep later even in the open loft area.

The front desk was great. They had pre-printed cards with directions to every attraction we asked for, and restaurant recommendations in different areas. The pool was heated (almost to bath temps!), the laundry area was clean and convenient. 4 washers and 6 dryers. I suggest the front loading washer; you get a longer and better wash than the top-loaders.

The location of the hotel was convenient to highways, although it was not particularly scenic. It was about 10 - 15 mins. depending upon traffic to Balboa Park and downtown San Diego.

I highly recommend this hotel to all travelers (although we were a family on spring break, we also saw business travelers). It was a great value and a pleasant place to stay.

  • Liked — Space, cleanliness, style, separate rooms, included full breakfast
  • Disliked — Location a little dreary, traffic can cause delays on local highways

We just returned from a 3 night stay at this Residence Inn, San Diego Central. We were able to check in early which was so nice after a long drive. We were met with smiling faces at the front desk. We loved our penthouse suite!! The set up is perfect for our family of five. The two girls slept upstairs, our son on the foldout sofabed and my husband and I in the downstairs king bedroom. During the day, it was great to take a nap and have the kids upstairs watching tv. The furnishings were nice with granite marble countertops. Housekeeping supplied us with many towels and kept the room very clean. We really appreciated how warm the pool was. Alot of hotel pools are heated but not this warm. It was like warm bath water. On Thursday night, they had a complimentary BBQ which consisted of hamburgers, pasta, fresh fruit, chips, soda, brownies, etc. It was wonderful!! The grounds were very pretty and nicely kept. It was a short 10-15 minute drive to Sea World and was not so crowded as other closer hotels. We would definately stay again!

  • Liked — Set up of room with upstairs loft and separate living and bedroom downstairs plus 2 bathrooms
  • Disliked — Internet service is not wireless, but is free
