“Lovely but Some Rooms Have Terrible Views”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 days ago NEW

I was here for a week for training. The location is amazing: 15 min from the airport; walking distance to restaurants, convenience stores, grocery stores, bars, shopping, and public transportation.

The staff is friendly, helpful, and there are guys outside that help with taxis.

I had lunch at the bar and it was nothing to write home about.

The tub didn't drain well when I showered.
The WiFi wasn't extremely reliable.

I was on the 4th floor and my view was just some other buildings very close to my window in all directions and then the top of a roof with mechanical fixtures below... :( One reviewer had said that every room had a great view. Not true... But maybe it's because I was paying the government rate. The room itself was not bad given the age of the building.

The training was down near the old safe and the staff put out breafast and then snack items throughout the day. There was a cocktail reception for my class on the first day with an open bar. Every training table had a pitcher of water and candies. I was very impressed.

The gym had clean towels, treadmills, ellipticals, free weights, water, a ball, and mats. The only thing missing was a bosu ball. Really nice.

We've stayed at this hotel three times before and it remains our favorite hotel to stay in San Diego and one of our favorite Courtyard Hotels in the US. The historic former bank building has been turned into a very comfortable and modern hotel while maintaining some of the history and details of the bank that was built in 1928. Ask the staff for a tour of the bank vaults in the basement, really interesting and unique. All of the rooms are different, the outside rooms facing Broadway or Sixth are brighter but are also noisier; the inside rooms facing a courtyard are quieter but without views. The staff is very helpful and friendly - on this trip we have to recognize and give kudos to Dennis. He was extremely helpful and took the time to sort out the mechanics of fitting luggage for four people into our rental SUV, with a smile and a can-do attitude! Most everything in "tourist" San Diego is walkable, including the Gaslamp District, Seaport Village, and the Headquarters, a new restaurant "complex".

Room Tip: Parking was a challenge and $40 a night was a bit much for me...

The Courtyard by Marriot Downtown is in an excellent location...walking distance to Downtown, the Gaslamp District, Balboa Park and museums and the waterfront. It is a well run, attractive hotel with a full service restaurant and spacious lobby. Staff is friendly and competent. Rooms are clean and well appointed with mini-frigs, microwaves and in the suites, a wet bar. The suites consist of two small rooms with a two tvs, a living room with desk, couch and chair and a closet with safe. We need two rooms as my husband likes to get up early while I prefer to sleep in. Our friends got a single room. They were given a handicapped accessible room so it was spacious with a huge bathroom. Newspapers were available every day in the lobby including the local paper plus the WSJ. The price for this hotel was significantly less than the nearby Kimpton and several others I checked. They offered a pre-paid option that saved us a great deal over the regular rate. The restaurant has excelelnt service and a very good breakfast. There are small coffee makers in the room. There were no robes in our room, but when we asked for them they brought us two with slippers. The inner courtyard rooms are quieter than those on the street. There is a small workout room but no pool. I highly recommend you check prices and consider this lovely hotel.

Room Tip: If you prefer quiet ask for an inside room...no view but completely quiet. Our suite on the 6th flo...

This hotel was much more than we could have expected! We were both blown away when we walked into the beautiful lobby that embraced the history of the bank that this historic building used to be, yet included modern and clean features. We were given a room on the top floor which was fantastic and were welcomed with champagne and chocolate covered strawberries upon arrival. Thanks to Linda Nguyen for sending those for our honeymoon! We met other fantastic employees during out visit. The ladies who checked us in were extremely pleasant and congratulatory. Another who made a lasting impression was Maximilian from the bell desk. We encountered him when we forgot our room key to get to our room. He gladly assisted us in getting our key and then offered to take us up to the observation deck for our special occasion and show us the great views. We discovered that he is extremely knowledgeable about the city and recommended many places to eat and discover while we were visiting. We are San Diego regulars and have our regular places we love, but his recommendations allowed us to discover even more and add to our list. We sought him out the following day for more of his great recommendations. He is the resident bellman/concierge! As someone who works in the hospitality industry and understands the value of good employees and service, I can say he is an asset to this property! The location was great and walking distance from great food, shopping, and night life. My uber to the airport was $4. This was an exceptional trip at an exceptional property with exceptional service. Thank you very much to all!

Room Tip: High floor!

Oozing with charm. Lots of historic features from the building's former life as a bank but the hotel is also modern and comfortable.

Great location. Right near all the bar action but slightly set back so not noisy. Rooms upstairs have more light so would recommend requesting one of those.

Helpful staff.

Will definitely stay again if I'm ever in San Francisco again

PROS
-Magnificent historic building - former 1928 bank - a truly unique concept!
-Centrally located in the Downtown Gaslamp District.
-Excellent, friendly and professional Front Desk Manager - Thea: thank you so much for all your help. We did appreciate your caring hospitality!
-The nicest and most helpful staff: just ask and they will do their best to share suggestions and reccomendations.

CONS
-Common areas are grand, but rooms show a few signs of shabbiness and need touch-ups.
-Rooms at lower floors facing the street can be noisy - avoid mezzanine.
-Rooms could do with occasional "surgical" cleaning and plumbing check-up.
