“Relax and get set back in time”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 31, 2013

I always wanted to stay at the US Grant in San Diego and I finally got the change (Thank you Priceline). I had very high expectations on this historical landmark hotel and they were truly surpassed. The hotel is located in the heart of San Diego and you can walk almost everywhere to experience the SD night life. You can feel the historic ambience and flair all over - in the entrance hall as well as in the floors and the rooms. There are so many unique details everywhere - take your time and read the history of this hotel at the reception. The rooms are pretty big with large windows and a king size bed - everything was really awesome and I hope to stay there again.

Glad you finally got the chance to stay with us Ingo! Though it is not always available, occasionally we do partner with the third party websites for an amazing value for our luxurious hotel and it seems you got it at the right place right time! I am proud we surpassed all of your expectations and we truly hope to welcome you back again. Jared, Dir of Front Office

My husband and I stayed here for a weekend getaway and had a great experience! The hotel is historic and beautiful. It is in a good location. We were able to walk to the gaslamp district and the marina. We stayed in a superior room and thought that it was just the right amount of space for the two of us. The bed was huge and very comfortable. The bathroom had a nice shower. The staff was very friendly and seemed really eager to help! Every single staff member that we encountered had a great attitude. We both also really enjoyed the Sunday waffle brunch buffet in the hotel's restaurant. The only negative is that valet parking is expensive at $38 a day. The valets did provide good service. We would definitely recommend!

First time staying at the U.S Grant for our anniversary/ pre-baby get away, and was looking forward to an exceptional service and an upgraded room with special touches, but instead, a superior room with twin beds, and a view of a haunted looking motel across the street.

Inside the room: The carpet and furniture looked outdated, AC made loud rattling noises when turned on, although Oscar the electrician came and made it better, but the noise still persisted. The wall seemed paper thin, we can hear people talking and whenever house keeping passes by the hall way.

PS. Minimum/No upgrade for SPG Gold member, no coffee maker in room, $38/day for valet parking.

Thank you wowwu for you review and for your patronage to Starwood and I am sorry we did not meet your expectations with your special stay. It is always regrettable when we do not have the availability to give our valued Gold SPG guests enhanced rooms. Many aspects of our hotel can certainly seem dated as we are the most historic hotel in downtown San Diego, but we pride ourselves in our service, charm and amazing food and beverage team. If you do join us again, and we hope you do, please know that while there may not be coffee makers in the room standard we do welcome you to the Grant Grill for complimentary coffee from 6:30-8:30 every morning! Thank you again and we hope to welcome you back. Jared, Dir of Front Office

4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2013

My partner and I spent this past Memorial Day weekend at The U.S. Grant Hotel and let me start first by saying that the highlights of this hotel were (a) Location and (b) Customer Service. Those are two of the greatest attributes in my opinion of why this hotel is way better than those of comperable caliber in San Diego's world-famous Gaslamp District, but is not a full 5-star property, certainly a 4-star/4.5-star hotel. We're in our 30's and like to enjoy the amenities of a hotel like Spa, Pool, Gym but this hotel is where it lacked. I will go in details below for the areas where we considered this hotel to be top notch and those might need some work.

-Pros-
Location: The hotel is situated across the street from the Horton Plaza, a Westfield shopping mall with most retail shops that you could ask for (Macy's, Nordstrom's, etc.). Due to its location in the Gaslamp District you have many bars, restaurants, coffee shops, etc. at your doorstep. If you're like us and driving from the craziness in L.A. you will have a car with you but if you're visiting just downtown San Diego, a car is not needed for this hotel is situated about two blocks from the San Diego Trolley line, and about a 15-min. ($20 dollar cab ride to the Airport).
Check-In: This was the quickest but very attentive and extremely professional agent (Nicholas), he was able to find us a room about two hours before check-in which we were so appreciative since we had just driven about three hours from L.A., so we were a little tired.
Customer Service: We have been coming to San Diego for many times and staying in town for our trip and in comparison to other San Diego/La Jolla hotels, The U.S. Grant Hotel was by far my favorite in terms of their stellar customer service. From housekeeping, to guest services who provided me a complimentary drink since for signing up for SPG (Starwood Preferred Guests) to the Concierge, who seemed extremely knowledgeable about all things San Diego.
Bath Amenities: They use Remède, probably some of the most high-end bath products that I've had, which I just adored (typical to that of the spa).
Rooms: The hotel was very well equipped with every amenity you could ask for in terms of a high class service hotel, besides having one of the most comfortable bed ever, they had excellent quality linens, bad robes, satellite T.V., in-room safe, mini-bar, amazing bath products, slippers, etc.

-Cons-
Pool/Spa: The hotel did not have a pool (or spa facility), which was a huge disappointment. It's not secret, it's advertised in their website, which I wish I would have checked, so it's my fault in a way so as a Senior Contributor for TripAdvisor, please be aware of this fact. Which for me if it was a luxury collection hotel resort without a pool (or spa?), who would have guessed that? Not me, and trust me I have travelled the globe. Having said that, however, the Concierge at the hotel advised us to go to their sister property, The Westin Hotel at the Horton Plaza mall, which was about a 5 minute walk and we were asked to show our U.S. Grant Hotel key and we would get a complimentary pool access. The pool was on the small side, but if you wanted a pool, this was your only option so we took it.
Parking: The hotel offers a $38 parking overnight fee per day (with in and out priviliges), which we found, even for someone who lives in Los Angeles, way too high specially since we're guests of the hotel. We found a secured ACE parking garage on Market St. (about a 5 minute walk from hotel) for less than what the U.S. Grant wanted to charge for overnight parking.
Overnight Security: We came in late from the bars on Sunday night, and it was very difficult to find a door that was open, which apparently by they close all entrances after 12:00AM (midnight). So we had to enter the hotel trough the valet service entrance, which meant that we had to walk around the block finding the valet entrence (since we did not park here), and the security guard was so rude in answering my question as to why the hotel had the need to close every single entrance to the hotel. They really need to train security to be more "customer" friendly. He certainly could learn from the front desk staff.

Overall we had a very pleasant stay and depending on pricing options in the near futyre we might stay here again (perhaps they will consider building a pool/jacuzzi in the mean time)... ;-)

That was quite a response Miguel! I can see why you are a senior contributor to Trip Advisor! You said many great things during your review and I am most proud Nicholas Furey for makign a great impression on you. He is actually one of our newer ambassadors and already a star in the making. It is true we do not have a pool nor have had one for many years; one of the more interesting aspects of our historic hotel. A little history nugget: the US Grant did at one point have a pool. It was set up as turkish bath house style with water from the harbor brought into the hotel for a continuous saltwater bath. As the harbor developed the water was no longer useable for this and it was boarded up. It actually existed right under the sidewalk of Broadway and tiles to see the travelers walking over them! Someday.... maybe someday.

The hotel historical setting was gorgeous. Every hotel employee was committed to providing excellent service. Every single person was attentive and very friendly/polite and confirmed our needs were met. The suite did have a few challenges. Although we were located on the 8th floor, our windows were frosted over and we could not see out. This made the room feel confining. One of the bathroom lights was out and made putting makeup on was difficult.

Also, check your bill. We had a minibar charge and had not even touched the minibar. The checkout employee quickly apologized and removed the charge.

We would definitely visit again. Next time would just check on room capabilities before accepting room assignment.

Thank you for your glowing response especially accentuating our amazing and attentive staff. Truly we would not be who we are without the people you meet everyday in the lobby, on the drive, in the hallways and in the restaurant. Thay make the US Grant the great hotel that it is! Sorry about the minibar charges; we have a very sensitive system in place and of course we always want accurate charges for our guest at checkout. We look forward to welcoming you back! Fantastic evening in San Diego. Probably one of the best hotels. Great lobby area, bar and grill food is excellent. We had dinner and breakfast and were very happy with both meals. Great location. My only complaint is I only stayed one night at not three. Suggest booking through American Express Fine Hotels & Resorts for best value.

We stayed here for three nights. We were able to get a large room with two very comfortable king beds, sitting area and dining area and a luxurious bath. They also have a very nice restaurant as well as a great location. It is a historic hotel with a long list of notable guests. It is convenient and within walking distance of many restaurants. It is also right across the street from Horton plaza, a unique shopping area.

An excellent review Mary and I can tell from your description that you booked the Signature suite! Excellent choice there! It is truly one of our most luxurious layouts with ample bedding and an amazingly spacious shower. We look forward to welcoming you back for more dining at the Grant Grill as well! We have just recently added even more unique craft cocktails to our ever expanding menu. Jared, Director of Front Office
