This is a nice old hotel in the center of San Diego. The hotel is in a pretty good shape and has a luxurious feeling. The rooms are clean and large. However, I still rate it as poor as staff was not up to these standards. The front desk is understaffed at some times and housekeeping did not seem to know about our clear and communicated wishes to clean the room in the afternoon rather than in the morning. The restaurant is hopeless too. Breakfast is way overpriced and very poor. Two pieces of bread, some butter and jam for about 15 Dollars? Second, they forgot to bring my hot chocolate and instead some guy poured coffee into my mug without asking. Further, just because my neighbor ordered the same breakfast, this does not mean that I don't need additional glasses of jam (he already used up all his -- nobody cared). The bar serves small dishes in the evening. I tried a club sandwich. It was awful. Huge mountain of toast, salad, dry bacon (likely remaining pieces from breakfast) and very cheap turkey ham without much sauce. Everything was dry. For this price and in this hotel, I would have expected a real club sandwich with traditional fresh baked ham and freshly cooked juicy pieces of turkey (for the cook: the bacon and turkey are meant to be still warm and right out of the pan). Last but not least, they charge an additional 12 Dollars for Internet Wifi in the room plus something like more than 15 Dollars/minute telephone rates for international calls. This is just ridiculous in 2013...

Greetings Bioko,

We often find ourselves a home away from home for many of our international travelers who appreciate our historic charm and elevated service levels. For all the touch points that you encountered we seemed to be missing a step throughout and for that please accept our apologies. We work hard to curate exceptional experiences from our Welcome at the Front Desk to our freshly baked and house sliced turkey breast Club Sandwiches. We know that Switzerland is a journey away but we hope that should you return to the area you consider us again as our values are truly well aligned.

Thank you for your discerning feedback and safe travels,

Nathan Davis, Director of Operations

The hotel is beautiful. Its been renovated to bring back its timeless look, yet still and for a long long time could compete as the nicest hotel in San Diego. The amenities are all top, the rooms are large, the bathrooms you'll wish would be at your home. The hotel is very safe as you'll need a room card to access certain floors. All the staff is very nice, always asking how your stay is going or if they can bring you anything. The Grant Grill is a great restaurant and bar. They have live music that fits the hotel and wether you are going to be at the bar watching a game or in the restaurant enjoying an intimate meal, you'll have a great experience.

Its been almost 4 months now since my wife and I got married in the Crystal Ballroom and had our reception in the Celestial Ballroom at the Grant, and we think about it and talk about it everyday as if it were yesterday. People tell us all the time that our wedding was the best they'd ever been to. During the course of our engagement and planning we visited the Grant 4 times, each time getting better and better. From the very get go, Lauren Bonahoom (the Grants wedding person) was outstanding, she would get back to us with questions and solutions as if we were her only wedding going on. She helped me out secure the rooms we wanted and made sure everything was perfect, she went out of her way so that we could look back at our weekend and have no regrets about anything. Over the course of our visits leading up to our wedding and our wedding weekend, Brian who works at the Grant and overseas the actual night of the wedding was awesome! There were so many little things he did that weekend out of nowhere, that ended up being so important and special. His attentiveness and constant eye on everything made our night without any incident, it was perfect because of him and the entire staff. We will go back hopefully sooner than later and hope we can thank them all again, because looking back at it, we left the next day and never had the time to really give them all a big hug and thank you.

Everything is really close and within walking distance here. The Gaslamp is only blocks away, the water, harbor and little Italy isn't that far either. Anyone on any trip or stay in San Diego would have a very nice time staying at the US Grant.

Best Wishes US Grant! See you soon!

Room Tip: If you need a double bed, try to get the Signature Suite. If you are a couple, get a Landmark Suite...

From the first moment that you pull into the valet stand at this property, you know that it's going to be luxurious stay. They service of the staff really shows that you are staying at a luxury property. Then as soon as you walk into the lobby of the hotel you can just see the time, and attention to detail that they put into the renovations of this historic luxury collection hotel.

The front desk staff was quick to accommodate my needs of an early check in and when i needed an item that i had forgot to pack, they let me borrow what they had. Byron, who brought our luggage to our room was kind enough to ask what we needed and brought us back some ice and a fridge (which we hadn't even thought to ask for). I can't even imagine how anyone could write that this hotel had the "worst service ever" as i have stayed in many hotels around San Diego and this hotel is top notch and have never had any issues. Turn down service was seamless and welcomed very much... i even like how they thought to make sure that the curtains were closed so that in the morning the light wasn't let into the room.

Room Tip: Please be aware that this hotel is located in the heart of downtown San Diego, so you WILL hear nois...

I had two short stays at this hotel and only had time to walk to sushi next door. It was a calming and enjoyable experience to walk through the lobby display of the hotel history and the exterior when lit at night was magnificant. The rooms have an understated elegance with muted colors but attention was paid to every detail from bathroom toiletry to the softest slippers and bathrobes. The corner room has a great view of the seaport and the rest of the town. Wish I could have stayed longer.

Room Tip: For a nice view, choose a corner room on the higher floor.

Built in 1910 by the U.S. Grant Jr., this hotel is inspiring. Now owned by an Indian tribe, the latest renovation restores its brilliance, from alabaster & Italian-marble stairways, silk damasks and carpeting, to beautiful original wood throughout. The history of the building is described on posters by the 4th Street entrance. The concierge, Maximillian, was wonderful as he showed us a few magnificent rooms that were available within the context of the buildings history. This is definitely a great place to stay in San Diego's Gas Lamp area and rooms are priced much lower than one expects.

This beautiful old hotel in downtown San Diego at the edge of the Gaslamp District and Horton Plaza is a beautiful old building with nice design elements throughout. Front desk service is courteous and Mark at the concierge desk was GREAT! When I checked in I was told the hotel was fully booked, but they managed to find me a nice corner room overlooking Broadway. What was surprising was that for a fully booked hotel I saw very few guests. The lobby was quite handsome but empty and even the bar was busy but not full on a Saturday night.

My room was wonderful. Sure there was the street noise one might expect, but what do you expect from an urban location. The toiletries were excellent and the nightly turn down was welcomed. The beds were super comfortable and I slept well.

But something was missing. Not sure what it was, but it is far from one of the finest hotels I have experienced. Very nice, but less than I was expecting from a Luxury Collection Hotel.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms overlooking Broadway if noise is an issue.

This was my 2nd time staying at the US Grant and i can definitely say i will NEVER return. From the moment we checked in, things were a total disaster. Cribs that were requested at the time of making the reservation (over 2 months ago) were not in the room. We called the morning before checking in to confirm they would be there and were assured they would be there. We were told the same at the time of check-in. Finally after speaking with the supervisor, they somehow located 2 cribs which were just dumped into our room - no sheets, no bedding, nothing.

My 2 year old toddler cut herself and i called down for a bandaid (it never came).

We requested slippers for our room - were told that they don't have (really? A Luxury property like this doesn't have slippers for their guests??)

When we complained about the horrible service to the manager, he was basically indifferent and offered a very lukewarm apology. My husband even threatened to pack up and leave at 8pm at night and his response was 'If that's what you'd like to do, you're more than welcome'. Clearly they didn't care about our business.

This hotel clearly does not know the first thing about luxury or service or how to treat a guest. Definitely not worthy of being categorized as part of the Starwood 'Luxury' Collection. Definitely shows well from the outside but the luxury ends there.

Love2travel,

Allow me to personally accept all responsibility for the missed components to your stay. From the descriptions of your experiences this is certainly NOT how we do business. While we may not have a chance to recover from your experiences we are aghast enough in reviewing your post that we have shared this with all members of our team to assist with a realignment behind our core luxury service standars.

We appreciate your caring enough to share this feedback and wish you the best on your future travels,

Nathan Davis, Director of Operations
