“pool & party in Uptown San Diego”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 22, 2012

we have been in the Hotel Lafayette for 4 days. overall it has been a positive experience. rooms a clean, even if trash bins have not been cleaned every day, coffee in the room has not been provided even if written in the hotel description. hotel staff has been very kind and helpful, anytime.
we booked the hotel with breakfast which was " continental" and unfortuntaley quite poor, so you better have breakfast at starbucks close to the hotel.
the pool is fantastic, good fun. we had 3 days of pool party, which was very nice for us, because we enjoyed, but if you are looking for a quiet pool relax location you need to avoid the weekend.

My husband and I stayed here for six nights in August of 2012, Very clean rooms, air conditioned, and to top it off,,,, great food in the restaurant, both breakfast and lunch have been a foodies delight. Planning on having dinner here tonight.

The hotel staff have been a travelers dream, very efficient, namly Andie who plans the events at the hotel and pool. We will tell our friends.

Room Tip: Main hotel, over looking the pool.

I attended the ISTE conference in San Diego in June. The price for hotel rooms was astronomical. Not wanting to spend the more than $400 per night that hotels near the conference center were charging, I did some research and came up with the Lafayette Hotel for $109. I wasn't expecting much, but was very pleasantly surprised with this gem of a hotel. My room was large, bright, and cheerful. The staff was delightful, there was delicious coffee in the lobby every morning, and the hotel had charm and character. I would highly recommend it!

Very very disappointed. Staff didn't hesitate to continue their personal conversation while checking us in. Rooms were damp and musty smelling. When we had to check out a day early, clerk realized we had a pre-paid package. The "oh well, nothing I can do" attitude was the straw that did it for me. I wasn't asking for anything, but maybe a little recognition that I was checking out vs. him checking out the girls walking through the lobby. Terrible value for the price. You can pay the same amount, and be closer to activities.

My friends and I were not able to get a reservation at our usual hotel in San Diego, so a friend from the area suggested the Lafayette. The sign in front lists it as the LaFayette Bungalows and Swim Club. There were 3 of us and we had requested a suite, which we were told they had. We did not get a "suite" but instead had a very nicely appointed and clean room with 2 double beds overlooking a courtyard with a giant chess board for the guests to play. We arrived on a Sunday evening and the pool was PACKED with people! Apparently they host a pool party on the week-ends and non-guests can enter for a $10 cover. The pool area was beautiful, but we were not able to enjoy because of the crowd all ready gathered there. The lobby was grand with high ceilings and mid century furnishings. All the staff we came in contact with, including in the lower parking garage, were very friendly. There were too many kids running in the halls for my liking, but if you're traveling with family this may be the perfect place. There is no continental breakfast provided, but there is a restaurant/bar on property. Everything was extremely clean! Before check out, we were able to look inside several other rooms being cleaned, and they do indeed have suites. Make sure to specify when making reservations and checking in. Overall it was a good value and close to where we wanted to stay in San Diego.

Room Tip: Rooms away from the pool are much quieter.

Dear Robertx2: We are delighted that you discovered the Lafayette Hotel and thank you for your comments. To clear up any confusion on our rooms; we offer five distinct room types: Manor Room and Manor Suite both located in our historic main building and feature nostalgic inspired design. Poolside Rooms feature bright and airy décor with French doors opening to the pool or upstairs view balcony. Suze Suites, true two-bedroom, two-bath suites designed with a contemporary flair. Bungalows, each one-of-a-kind historic gem has been painstakingly restored to its original Hollywood grandeur and is available with two or three bedrooms. To be certain on your room type, please visit our website.

You wouldn't expect to find a prominent colonial icon when you roll down El Cajon Blvd but you'll recognize it the minute you see it! It has a feel of the 1930-40's and pictures of movie stars and other prominent Americans from the past visiting the hotel. A very friendly staff at check in surprised us with an upgrade to a pool side suite. Speaking of which, the pool is the center stage for a lot of happenings at the hotel so don't be surprised if on a warm day the locals will have joined you in front of your room. The music creates and enjoyable friendly atmosphere but at 6:00 PM the locals are asked to leave and you have the pool till 10:00 PM before it closes. We did not experience it but read other reviews and saw the list of parties, if you're not into the wild stuff or have kids don't stay in the week-end along side the pool! It gets crazy so we're told!
The hotel also has a great bar and restaurant with very affordable breakfast and very good food for dinner. You can sit in and outside. Arriving back one night we were pleasantly surprised that a movie was showing at the far end of the pool while people were hanging out in and outside the water to enjoy it! Our kids (4, 9, 11) loved it and my kids with them!
It is 10 mins from the Zoo and the same from the Old Town and even Downtown was about 13 mins away! Our room (suite 51) was spacious and clean and looked as if it had just been redone. One thing they need to improved is their WIFI availability, at some point they had reached their maximum number of connections. Oh well, a night without Internet isn't that bad!

I payed 170$ for a hotel right in El cajon which is not the best and safest area. Over priced I believed. Overall though I must say the entire experience was great and rooms are very clean. Staff was great and I liked how there was security that was easily found.
