This was a great hotel. Not your standard cookie cutter. It is a boutique hotel that was built in the 1886. If you like the Victorian era the hotel is an excellent representation. With fireplaces in many of the rooms it is great for a couples getaway.
The rooms are smaller (think European) and don't expect hot tubs, swimming pools or even refrigerators in the room . But the ambiance makes it worthwhile. My room and the hotel in general was very clean and well maintained.
Even for business the location near the convention center and Gaslamp district makes it a great location. The staff was excellent.
Now for the warning. If your room opens near the main stairs you will hear the bar entertainment. If you have a beautiful balcony rooms facing Island Street Thursday-Saturday don't expect to sleep until the nightclub cross the street shuts down at 3:00 AM. The rooms on the alley side (south side I think) will be sheltered from the bar and nightclub. But it is San Diego and I have yet to find a hotel where you don't hear drunken revelry on the weekends. I stayed in room 218 and had no noise problem. The bar music stopped before 10:00 PM so everything worked out fine for me.
