“Nice downtown hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2014

Really cool vintage downtown hotel - old but excellently restored with modern amenities and lots of charm. Reasonably priced with clean, comfortable rooms. Excellent location - easy walking distance to gaslamp district, waterfront, & Petco Park. Was very happy with it and would definitely stay there again.

Hotel offers a breakfast buffet for $12, but I would skip it. It was OK but not great and there are several better places within easy walking distance.

Note that the only parking option (other than city lots) is valet at $30/day, which I think is high, but not really that out of line for downtown San Diego. This is not well stated on their website - I had to hunt around for it. I find that a little annoying as I think hotels should prominently list all their ancillary fees but I guess that's just the way of things these days. I have a full sized pickup and they were able to park it without damaging it which, based on previous experiences, is quite an accomplishment in downtown San Diego.

Bottom line - even with parking added in, this place was still a much better deal than most of the downtown hotels and sacrificed nothing in the way of quality. I highly recommend it.

Room Tip: Since this is an older hotel, standard rooms are a little smaller than newer hotels. If that bother...

Every summer, I take my staff(of 3) to a Padres baseball game in San Diego. I get a room for myself and them at the Horton Grand. We've stayed there several times before. This occasion was a satisfying stay. The rooms have been upgraded slightly. There is now bottled water and a coffee machine, and the breakfast buffet is back. This is a Victorian era boutique hotel, and the furnishings and ambiance are right out of the 1890's. (The place was once a brothel back in the day!). Reservations done right, room clean, bed comfy, linens and toiletries good. There is no fridge or microwave, but most rooms have a gas fireplace. The rooms are small, but furnished with Victorian furniture and fixtures. A great place for a week end getaway. I'll be back.

Room Tip: Get an inside or back room. The rooms facing the street can be noisy on the weekends when the drunk...

Let me start by saying the staff at the Horton Grand rates a 5 out of 5. In fact the over night desk woman was a life saver for me. I was very ill (taco dinner up the street at La Puerta did not sit well) and she was able to provide chilled 7-up, Advil, and a bit of sympathy! I also really enjoyed the courtyard area. It was a great meeting place for our big group. Unfortunately my room was more like a 2 out of 5. I ended up staying on the 4th floor--423 to be exact. The room itself is fine. Old world charm but a bit worn down. The bathroom on the other hand was unacceptable. Peeling paint around the tub, old fashioned toilet (think pull down chain) that was a bit sketchy for flushing. Poor lighting, wavy mirror etc. etc. Couple that with the lovely porno that my neighbors were enjoying and I was pretty frustrated. The good news is that a major renovation seems to be underway. Hopefully that will address some of these issues. It may be worth asking for a renovated room (assuming they are not just renovating the hallways!). Also I would recommend requesting the 4th floor. From friends staying in the lower floors the room noise from above was a bit of an issue....

Rooms are medium-sized, 1800-ish, and a great facility when you consider the entire package (ease, comfort, location, front-desk help). Within walking distance of everything in downtown San Diego. The great restaurants located nearby number make the location alone worth staying at the Horton Grand. Close to trolleys and the ball park. Nancy, a front-desk manager, went overboard in making our visit a welcome one. The others helped endlessly with trips, tours, and transportation. A must-stay hotel. It will be our first pick on our next visit.

Room Tip: Rooms away from the bar are quieter.

Stayed here with a group over the July 4 weekend. This a great hotel. Definitely stay here rather than some bland chain hotel. It has a lot of style and character. The rooms are lovely in an old world way. They were very comfortable and clean. It is in a good location to wander around the Gaslamp District and down to the waterfront. The staff were excellent, very helpful. We loved it. Would definitely recommend it as a great place to stay

This hotel is a bit of history and a bit of fun. The staff was friendly and helpful. The rooms were clean and comfortable. Rooms are a bit small, but so were people in the 1800's, we had no problem with it. The desk clerk actually showed me the room before I checked in, to be sure it met my needs. There is no restaurant all the time, but there is a good breakfast buffet for $12 and a good lunch buffet for $15 with a wide variety of choices. There is a well-stocked bar that opens at 5pm and specializes in local wines and premium whiskeys. I especially liked the bartender, Howard, who after my first day remembered me and what I liked. Even when it was crowded the service was fast.

Room Tip: If you can get a room not facing the street it is quieter. However, the soundproofing is fairly dece...

Lovely, comfortable room with charming and friendly staff in a decent location. I will never stay anywhere else when I visit San Diego.I tried several hotels in this town; hands down the best value for the modest price.
