“More about the location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 14, 2009

Agree with all the recent reviews about its rooms. Nice and spacious. Sitting area has flat panel LCD (with a few local channels and the paid movies in HD); bedroom has older tube TV. My north facing room has decent view and can see planes on approach to SAN. My guess is that south-facing rooms will mainly see the office tower in the same complex.

On the Monday I was there, the area was very quiet at night, but not unsafe. From the 5th Ave trolley stop, it is 3.5 blocks to the hotel, but note that "A" St is on a small hill, so there's an upgrade going up. The northern boundary of the Gaslamp District is 5th and Broadway, so it's 5 blocks from hotel.

I did not try it, but at least during the day, it may be possible to go up the office tower from "B" street to the 12th floor where the two sides connect above the Symphony Hall. That would avoid climbing the hill.

I didn't have a car, but saw several garages on 5th and 6th Ave, about 3-4 blocks from hotel, to the north. So, there are options if one find the parking rate a bit steep.

There are several decent eateries on 6th Ave between "B" and "C" street, which is just 2 blocks away.

San Diego downtown isn't that large. While I did ride the trolley sometimes, I have also walked through the whole Gaslamp District and back from hotel; and I have also walked all the way to the Santa Fe depot. So, while its location may not be the most central, it is also quite acceptable.

Stayed here for 2 nights during New Years Eve after our Mexican cruise. Hotel is just a few blocks away from the gaslamp quarter with all the bars/restaurants and also close to shopping mall. Rates were very affordable and the suites were very spacious, clean, and updated. Would definitely stay here again!

Booked using Priceline. The price was very good and the hotel was clean, contemporary, updated.

We used the hotel to sleep over before heading on a cruise and the hotel was minutes away.

Since the hotel is downtown, parking is NOT free. $22 self parking and $28 valet. There is street(meter) parking around the area so give that a try. The hotel is atop the symphony so you take an elevator from ground floor to the 11th or 12th, that's the lobby.

Room was extremely spacious as it was s suite. Separate living room area with sofabed, LCD TV, desk, arm chair and bar area. There was a fridge stocked with drinks and some space to still put your own personal items in there.

The bathroom doesn't quite match the updated look of the lobby and rest of the room.

Not too many restaurants around but there were convenient stores, coffee places to pick up essentials.
Would definitely stay here again for the same purpose.

Pros
* Very large suite rooms, clean and orderly. Good views.
* Excellent bath, separate walk-in shower
* Plasma TV in main room
* Great SPG platinum treatment: top floor, free internet, free breakfast (which was regular hotel fare, bacon/eggs, yogurt, fruits etc).
* Free business center allows printing

Cons
* Driving up 11 floors to parking wasn't that bad, but $22 a night is a bit disappointing
* Location is a little bit off restaurants etc if you are there for a vacation. It's very very business-y in the surrounding blocks (actually, I would prefer a closer location to gaslamp or beach even if I was on business)

Overall, I would say this delivers exactly what's promised.

Rates: booked for 3 nights using priceline name-your-own at 67 a night. Regular rate of 139 seems a bit excessive.

We were pleasantly surprised with the high spec of this hotel and the really good value for money. I had read a few reviews on other hotels on Expedia and I was really worried about staying in some of the hotels in downtown San Diego because of crime concerns. This was a real pleasant surprise particularly when I was being joined by family. Service was A1 and the staff were very helpful and pleasant. I was pleasantly surprised that the hotel provided free internet access which kept the costs down when speaking to family. I had stayed in an upmarket hotel on the bay which cost a heck of a lot more money (it was for a conference and paid for by my employer) and this hotel didn't even give you free internet access and you had to pay fpr the paper when you printed. Well done to the Sheraton and keep your prices keen and you will always be full.

Got a steal for this hotel on priceline.com for the Friday and Saturday following Christmas -- $53/night + taxes -- wow! I was pleasantly surprised when I checked in and realized I had a suite for this price... separate sleeping and sitting areas. The front desk staff were very helpful, and there were plenty of parking options so that I could avoid their >$20 parking fees at the hotel. On Sundays the meters don't run, so you're set there. Otherwise, I found a lot to leave my car in overnight for $14, I believe. I will be back again next month due to the great experience I had this trip.

I got a room there for $70 a nite with Priceline and the parking costs $25 extra per day. Only thing I don't like is the parking, the driveway seems to be never ending, and really tests your driving skills. But later I noticed there was an independent garage across the street, you can try that. Get back to the main thing, the room was clean, the bed was comfy. You can also brew some free Starbucks coffee in your room, or use the microwave to heat up some leftover to heal your late nite craving. The staffs were nice too, and the lobby looks good too. The location is good, easy access to freeways and the Park. But if you're not driving, it's quite a long walk to the major attractions. I have no problem what so ever during the stay, and I highly recommend this hotel.
