“DoubleTree by Hilton, San Diego, CA”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2014

The staff was very courteous and helpful. I didn't feel forgotten, since I arrived so early (along w/several people). I was given an estimate when the room would be ready and it was ready sooner than expected. Room service and cleaning staff was also excellent.

The hotel was extremely helpful, and the rooms are extremely comfortable. Our group was able to hang out in the bar area at night and in the restaurant at breakfast. The only warning I would put out would be the parking structure is a little tight.

Picked this hotel due to closeness to zoo, Balboa Park and Midway Museum. Hotel was clean, staff was very friendly, helpful. Had two problems - 1) A/C when out in room at 10pm - staff worked quickly to fix within an hour, also gave us a free movie ticket. Casually commented to reception staff that we had had a/c problems this next morning - they sent up a basket of fruit, candy (nice gesture). 2) Toilet clogged late at night - came and fixed it quickly, didn't cause us any delays, concern. Breakfast at restaurant was great - food & service.
Enjoyed the cookies. Got some every morning & nighty.
Good stay at nice hotel

Room Tip: Little Italy area very near, many Italian restaurants there, but if you want other types of restaura...

The hotel seems to be a bit dated. The room is ok with a little balcony, kind of old and not too spacious. The staffs are just normal. Walking distance to italian town. Definitely gonna stay in mission valley or near la jolla next time.

This is an unusually tricky review. Tricky because it's a nice hotel but there are a lot of buts.

The hotel is clean and has a modern feel. Room was spacious, comfortable, and clean. I'm confused by the negative reviews on the rooms. Maybe the hhonors floors (I was on one) have been renovated and others have not.

The thing is the location. It's a pretty long walk to the convention center. The walk goes past the jail and bail bonds offices, and in the evening it goes past homeless people. From the hotel to the convention center it seems like there's not a lot of restaurants or retail for several blocks. So if you have a car that wouldn't be an issue, but if you had a car you would probably stay elsewhere. You'd either want to be closer to attractions / work, or you would go farther out and not have to pay a premium to be "downtown" plus a fee for parking.

Going in a different direction, though, you are 2 blocks from a great gelato place and another block from the lively Little Italy. And in general the area has high-rise multi-family dwellings, so there are people out and about walking dogs, which tends to increase safety.

The pool area was very comfortable. Nice chairs and views.

The breakfast was good but not free (money or hhonors coupon). It takes a surprisingly long time for your waiter to bring coffee and later your check, despite this being a buffet. Seems like that process can be streamlined.

The rooms were quiet until the neighbors get "enthusiastic" or the people in the hallway don't care to lower their voices after midnight.

The WiFi often worked, and often cut off. The cable often worked and often went off or to non-HD.

So, I think it's a good spot if you are doing business at the federal or state buildings several blocks away and don't want to be somewhere as lively as the Gaslamp area, or if you're a pilot and just sleeping there for a night (there were several pilots there).

Overall it's a nice place but I'd look elsewhere next time.

The hotel itself was wonderful. The staff went out of their way to be helpful - like always giving you those yummy cookies whenever you asked. We ate in the restaurant every morning. Some of the food was just OK, but the cooked to order omelets were very large and very good. They also have a happy hour where the appetizers are half price...we actually made a dinner of them on two nights along with a glass of wine.

The hotel is located at the end of the off-ramp of the freeway. It didn't look like it on the map, but it is. The most difficult thing was the parking. We have a truck and ended up scraping the side on the narrow ramps to the hotel parking. No one was at the parking entrance when we arrived to tell us where else we could park. After scraping the side of the truck getting out of their parking structure, we parked across the street from the hotel in a "pay as you go" parking lot. It is an unmanned parking lot and you pay through a machine. It ended up being great. While the spaces are still small, we could park where we could get in and out easily.

Now that I know about the parking, I would stay here again.

Total average stay, not impressed. I thought as hosting an event the staff wold come and check on the event and make sure we were okay, but that did not happen and when 1 of our event guests did not show up, there was not a refund on the pre-paid room.
