I stayed at this hotel recently for a conference, and frankly, was surprised at all of the excellent reviews. While I was there, San Diego was hit with a major rain and wind storm, which meant there was no chance to use the pool or even get on the trolley and go to a more scenic area. Maybe if I had not felt so constrained, I could give the hotel a better review.
The hotel staff was excellent and quick to respond to my questions or needs -- that is the biggest plus of this facility.
However, I would definitely not consider this Marriott a good business hotel. As other reviewers have noted, there is a daily fee for WiFi, along with a substantial parking fee. In addition, there is no coffee in the lobby in the morning as is offered by Courtyard by Marriott, no frig or microwaves in the rooms. In addition, there were plumbing problems in my room -- a clogged sink and toilet that would not shut off. The Business Center is bare bones and the information about it in the hotel guide was out of date.
The location of this hotel is very isolated. Without a car, the only short walk is to a strip mall with a Home Depot, a few other stores and some fast food. The weather was so bad that for the most part, I was not even able to walk to this location for food options. The hotel's restaurant was mediocre at best. I ended up eating there the first night as I arrived late, ordering room service the second night since it was still pouring rain (good service but lousy food) and resorted to just getting an appetizer in the bar the third night due to the cost and the weather. So, I had a pretty good idea of the quality of the restaurant. I also watched an in-room movie that cost $19 plus dollars by the time the entertainment fees were added on. Yikes.
My room was clean and quiet. Housekeeping was good. Still, overall I can't give this hotel a higher rating because there was nothing to distinguish it. If there were more amenities available to business travelers, it could be much better.
