“Family vacation”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 7, 2013

Our family really enjoyed our stay here. The hotel staff was excellent, we had several requests during our week long stay and they were all met, everyone was so friendly. The property was very clean and comfortable. The pool and nightly smores around the fire were a big hit! The family movie around the pool was a nice touch. The room was comfortable and the beds were exceptional. This was a great hotel for us to base out of to enjoy San Diego. We are already planning to return for our next vacation. The only negative would have to be the parking, 16 dollars a day for self park and if don't drive a smart car or a mini you will not fit in the parking spots. I had to wedge myself in and out of the car door and back out to let the family get in. But, no door dings!

Room Tip: Better views from the balconies on the pool side of the hotel, west side. You can see the sunset and...

Thank you for your comments. We are so happy you and your family were able to enjoy some of our great summer leisure activities. We strive for service excellence and it is always great to hear when our guests recognize our staff for their friendly service. We will be taking into consideration your comments and the comments from previous guests regarding the size of our parking spots during our next parking lot renovation.

We've stayed at several Marriott properties and this one was equally well maintained and clean. We booke what we thought was a great rate at this property and upon checking in realized that we were going to be incurring some pretty outrageous fees- Breakfast fee: USD 20 per person (approximately)
Fee for in-room wireless Internet: USD 12.95 per day (rates may vary)
Self parking fee: USD 16 per day
Valet parking fee: USD 20 per day

The above list may not be comprehensive. Fees and deposits may not include tax and are subject to change. (From hotels.com)

We had just left a nearby Hampton Inn that was $10 cheaper per night with free parking, free wifi in the room and free breakfast! Feeling rather ripped off and wishing wed chosen to stay our entire trip at Hampton.

My family and I very much enjoyed our stay for our first trip to San Diego. The room was very nice and clean. The beds were comfortable and the view from our balcony was nice. The staff was great and the hotel grounds were beautiful. The Marriott never lets us down!

Stayed here with the family doing a California vacation. Landed in orange county and drove a rental car down. We're from canada and have 2 young boys. From the hotel it was a 10 minute drive to Sea world or the zoo and 40 minutes to legoland which was good. Staff and hotel were nice. Very friendly. Very nice grounds and pool area although the pool is 3.5 to 5' deep so not great for little kids. Biggest downfall was everything extra cost money. Free Internet only in the lobby, self serve parking $17 a day ( and the spaces are small! Watch your door dings) Cost for a mini fridge in the room and on and on... So again nice hotel and staff but for our family vacation purpose other than location not sure we' stay here again. Probably a good fit for some!

Stayed 2 nights at this Marriott hotel, which is centrally located in Mission Valley. It is close to the 8 and near Westfield shopping mall. The staff is friendly and the room was clean; however, the only disappointment inside the room was the actual shower head, which wasn't very powerful. The pool was impressive and there were plenty of areas available to sit and relax. My one suggestion for the this hotel would be to make changes to the parking lot operation. It seems unnecessary to keep a parking attendant there; it would be easier to install an electronic device where guests can tap their key card when going in/out.

Room Tip: Ask for a higher floor that overlooks the pool.

Hotel has recently been remodeled. It's conveniently located to attractions and the Tram. Staff were pleasant and helpful. It's a popular place on the weekend and the hotel was filled to capacity with a lot of kids. If you like kids and want services geared towards them, it's great. They even set up a special dining area for breakfast with small tables and finger foods, away from the regular dining area. This kept the kids occupied (assuming the parents were willing to be corralled there) and away from the other guests. If kids are not what you were looking for, then this is a negative. The pool area was nicely done with circular beds around the pool and plenty of chairs. The water is on the cold side - just makes you paddle fast. The Tram is a short walk out the back door. Get a day pass for $5 which allows you access to busses as well as the tram. Passes are bought at the tram station, although for some reason the machine does not always let you buy a day pass. The front desk will loan you a Compass Card, which you use to load your passes on.

Good
Room was spotless.
Bed comfy
Breakfast buffet was fresh and good. Selection was rather limited, especially Saturday, but it was good enough and the chef makes wonderful omelets. It is extremely pricey, at $20 for the buffet.

Negatives
Concierge room is closed on the weekends (typical for American Marriotts).
Down comforter on the bed is far too hot for the summer.
Nickel and diming on internet service - no guest computer (and Concierge lounge closed) - they have computers you can access for a fee.

The Marriott did what it was supposed to do, supply a clean room, for a good rate and in a decent location.

We paid 89/night through hotwire and got a lovely room on the 15th floor. The location was pretty good for us as it was about 10 minute drive to anywhere we wanted to go. The hotel appears that it is still in the middle of renovations as the pool area was relatively covered by the old green sconces and some cracked pavement.

The parking is 16/night and the spaces are extremely small. Our Toyota Camry had lots of issues fitting in the lines. It is in a secure area.

They had delicious cookies every day from around 5-6 in the lobby with milk. They also had strawberry and cucumber infused water in the lobby which was handy.

The staff we encountered was very friendly and accommodating.

There is a small patio so you can open up the door and take in the fresh san diego air. Not enough room to put a chair out or sit on one.

The rooms are updated and are clean, however you can tell the bathrooms are not updated yet, so they leave much to be desired. As well in the closets they still have the original shelving from the 1960s. The bathroom area seemed very cramped as well. Therefore because of the bathroom I am giving this hotel a 4.

The workout facility did the trick, however there is nothing fancy to the place.

At the restaurant they had free apples and oranges daily if wanted. For free. They also offered free laundry by the pool.

In conclusion the hotel did the trick and I would recommend it. I felt it was a decent enough location for our vacation to San Diego however there was a few things that didn't quite justify a 5* rating. This hotel on hotwire was listed as a 4* and I would probably give it a 3.5. Once all the construction is complete it very well might be a 4*.
