“Location is all that this property has”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2013

When I made the reservations to stay at this hotel, I was excited about the prospects given the location and knowing the beauty of San Diego. What I found is that location does not make a memorable hotel experience. I was so disappointed in the service level of employees, and overall appearance of the rooms that I will most likely never stay at this property again. I travel quite a bit and this hotel fell short on so many levels. The good: gym (better than most hotels), pool, location. The not so good: attitude of employees, service level overall, room condition, lobby crowds at all hours of the day.

Room Tip: Try to get a room on a higher floor as the pool area is very noisy.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2013 via mobile

I stayed for an IT user group meeting (work) with events like meals catered at the hotel and sessions and exhibit hall time at the convention center. If you are in town for a convention, it's the perfect location. Most or all hotels are "close" to the convention center, but this one is adjacent. Easy to walk via the road or the boardwalk! I had a room in the south tower with a balcony. It had a 50/50 view of the marina and downtown --- the trolley crossing noise does not appear to ever stop, and it was loud --- try to get a room overlooking the pool or ask for a room higher that x13 (where x is the floor number). (I was in 1109 and was more towards downtown so was loud.

Pool, spa (They have reciprocity with the Hyatt next door) and service are spot on.

I only gave it 4 stars b/c of some challenges checking in - I flew from the east coast and arrived at noon. Check-in is not untill 4pm. BUt, I called the day before and asked for an early check-in. As a platinum member, they said it would be no problem. Upon arrival not only was there no room ready, they indicated they had no availability on the elite floor and then said they would call me immediately upon a room being available. I checked with them at 2pm, 3 and then againg a little after 4pm. At 4, I was told they had given my elite room away because I did not come when called. (Wait, i thought there was never one available!!!!). Regardless, the 11th floor was lovely, but this was a small conference --- if they had this type of trouble with a small show, I would be very worried about a large one!!!

The hotel and staff were very friendly. The room itself was very nice, but felt small because of the two double beds. The pool was amazing, a little pricey to drink by the pool but still pretty awesome experience. The breakfast buffet was good, but it seemed a little understaffed, as the kitchen seemed it couldnt keep up with the demand of guest eating. Great location from Petco park, and gaslamp district! The only 2 complaints would have to be against house cleaning, and the noise. We went down to the pool for about 4 hours, I would say from about 1030 to 230, and the only thing they did was empty our trash. They didnt make our beds, or replinsh the coffe machine. Also the trains get very loud at night with their horn blowing, making some random wake ups throughout the night. Otherwise I would stay again here.

This is part of a continuing series of my impressions and experiences staying at various hotels and resorts while traveling to attend concerts and pop culture events worldwide. This review is for the San Diego Marriott Marquis & Marina - for a stay in July 2013.

Property: San Diego Marriott Marquis & Marina
Location: San Diego, California
Address: 333 West Harbor Drive, San Diego, CA 92101
Phone: (888) 236-2427

Room Type/Class: King
Date: July 17-22, 2013
Booking Source: Travel Planners for Comic Con Intl' (San Diego Comic Con)
Overall Rating: 5/5 [Note: Score is totally subjective based on price, location, and comparison to "like" properties within same area and price range]

I have been going to Comic Con International (San Diego Comic Con) in San Diego going back to 1987 or so, and the San Diego Marriott Marquis & Marina is far and away the best hotel I've stayed at for the event (and this is the third consecutive year with a 4-5 night stay). Since I reviewed this hotel last year, this is a 'Revisit' review and an update to my review published for last year.

The Marriott Marquis is positioned to be the most convenient location for Comic Con, and I would imagine any event taking place at the Convention Center - and that is saying a lot. Of all the hotels around the Convention Center, the Marriott is the only one that is adjacent, which makes it very easy to exit the front or back of the hotel to get to the nearby event.

Additionally, Comic Con is a huge event (150,000+ attendees), and the Marriott seems to staff appropriately to account for all of the guests and attendees visiting the hotel for related events.

With each of my stays in the past three years, I've had the same class of room in the same tower, with split views of both the ocean and the city from the balcony. Views are spectacular both during the day and at night. I did have an opportunity to photograph one of the rooms in the adjacent tower, which was overlooking the pool and lacked a balcony, so there are two sets of photos in this review.

The room was very clean and fresh, as has been my experience, and the room was spacious with a separate sitting area with couch and desk area.

The hotel offers both wired and wireless Internet. There was no in-room refrigerator, but there was a coffee maker and safe.

There are a few different restaurant options within the property, which were quite nice, as well as room service, which was also good.

Proximity to the marina is a big plus, as there are other near-by attractions to walk to, as well as downtown shops and restaurants.

As cautioned last year, though this doesn't have anything to do with the hotel management, but if you call on or employ a taxi, be sure you have a discussion before using them for their fees. Some will try to take advantage of large groups with exorbitant fees when large events such as Comic Con are going on.

All in all, the San Diego Marriott Marquis & Marina remains my top choice for any event taking place at the Convention Center. Marriott quality in a great location.

We got a really great deal on this hotel with the name your own price option on Priceline, and we couldn't have been happier with this place. Well, maybe a little bit...the bed wasn't the most comfortable in the universe, parking our car there was expensive, and our room was on the city view side where you can hear the bells that sound every time a train goes by (the tracks are just outside the property, across the street and they seem to go pretty much all night), but apart from those two minor annoyances, the place was fabulous. Our room was 2417 which is up high on the 24th floor. It was a nice king bed and since it was right on the corner of the tower we had two balconies! I even liked the lovely modern tiled shower with the big shower head instead of those standard ugly tub shower deals. Great city views, you could see Petco Park, planes taking off at the airport, and you could even see a little bit of the waterfront. We walked to the Top of the Hyatt bar next door, and had a beautiful sunset cocktail (expensive, but worth the view and ambiance) and then walked down to the Gaslamp area for more drinks and food (Kamakazi 7 on 4th and Market for sushi, The Field on 5th for drinks and good music). Tons of great places to try. Don't get ripped off by one of those bicycle rick-shaw guys! Just walk! Some jerk rode my parents up to 5th street from the hotel and charged them $20 EACH!! So watch out for them, they hang around just outside the hotel waiting to rip off lazy tourists. I rated "breakfast" poor just because the hotel has several food options on property, but it's all really expensive. There's a Starbucks on property with prices that are twice what a normal stand alone Starbucks is...it's like being at the airport, but that's to be expected with hotel amenities.

Room Tip: Ask for a corner room like 2417. You get a bonus mini balcony in addition to your regular balcony.

I stayed at this property in July. The rooms were clean, the hotel staff was wonderful and it's location is fantastic. If you are traveling here for business, take some time to walk along the park/path that runs outside the hotel. With a mile or so you will see the Midway carrier, various historic ships and pass through a park or two.

I love San Diego and staying at the Marriott Marquis and Marina is in the heart of most of the action. You are next door to Sea Port Village, Gas Lamp District, the Midway Aircraft Carrier, in walking distance to PetCo Park as well as the San Diego Convention Center. Restaurants abound all around.

However, the hotel is not cheap, but the service is becoming stale as are the rooms. For a hotel of this quality, the beds should be the best that can be obtained. However, our king bed was old, wiggly, covers were too heavy with no in room options for a lighter cover. The air conditioning unit is throttled back, so even if you set it to 64 degrees it doesn't go very low and it is too warm in the room for my comfort. Opening the door to the balcony gives fresh air, but exposes you to the noise of the pool below. The sheets don't stay on the bed as the fitting isn't accurate.

The dining experience in the in house café is less than acceptable. With 50 empty tables, the hostess still gives you a vibrating light to hold so they can send you a signal when your table is ready. Yet, the associate hostesses are taking people back as fast as they can. But you are still asked to wait, with no chairs or place to sit or even comfortably stand as you wish to go in. Table service is much better, but their coffee is bitter and way too strong. The buffet is expensive and the upside is their toast center as well as fresh omelet maker. But the buffet doesn't change from one day to the next.

Parking is way overpriced - self park is $28/night. Not sure about valet - didn't want to ask.

Finally, the Internet was $12.95 per day and yet it was so slow that nothing would completely download for me. I shut off the WiFi and had faster service with email and even some websites via my connection to AT&T! I complained and they asked me to call THEIR service provider to reset the WiFi in my area of the hotel - sorry - not my job!! However, they did take off the charges for the Internet. When one pays this much for being at the Marriott - give us something - even if it is just free WiFi in our rooms - not just in a centralized public area.

I like this hotel. But it appears not to have revisited its overall functionality, room experience, dining experience, and price/quality ratio! Come on Marriott! Don't rest on your behind! Reinvent yourself!!

Room Tip: Rooms in South Tower are closer to "board walk."
