“Nice, convenient, and as expected”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 20, 2007

The nice thing about Marriott is that you know what you're going to get, clean, quiet, and nice location. This hotel is no exception.

The room was clean and nice, nothing special but spacious and accomodating. The balcony with the "Bay View" (north tower) was spectacular. Unfortunately I never got a photo. The hotel is right across from the convention center, which is why I came to San Diego. They have a dry walkway since it insisted on raining several days. They have a very nice (but expensive) breakfast buffet downstairs. The hotel has several restaurants on site but is also close to the Gaslamp district (walk up either 4th or 5th street for lots of choices) or Seaport Village (didn't love the food anywhere but the views are gorgeous). Their concierge service helped us out a lot, and cheerfully. They have a water ferry that goes over to Coranado island for $6/each way. We took the shuttle back from the Hotel Del Coranado to the Marriott on the way back for $24. Internet (no WiFi) is $9.95/day and supposedly includes local and long distance calling although I never used that.

On a separate note, I found taxi's to be rather expensive in San Diego overall. This was a $20 ride from the airport and from the hotel up to Mission Beach area I paid over $30 each way with tip. After being spoiled in NYC the week before it was difficult to adjust. Luckily this hotel is close to many restaurants and attractions, in this town that's worth it!

I agree the view is nice and it is near the convention center.
However the service is terrible, it is a bit run down and outdated, and the room rates are out of controll. The quality of the rooms was at best a Holiday Inn.

We stayed here for 3 days and 2 nights as part of our honeymoon in Sept. First off, upon checking in we were warmly greeted and instantly upgraded to this room for our honeymoon, what a treat!!! We got a bayview room w/ a balcony in the North tower on the 23rd floor overlooking the bay. What a great view. A few minutes after we checked in, the manager sent up a complimentary bottle of champagne for us. Now that was classy!!! We happened to be in town during the Red Bull Airshow and it was just amazing to see the show below us from our balcony. Great view of Coronado as well. This hotel room had a small sitting area and a fridge in it. It was very convenient to Seaport Village and to downtown and the Gaslamp District. All within easy walking distance. Plenty of stores, restaurants and bars close by. We even walked up to Little Itally one day and had an excellent meal at a nice little trattoria there. We did spend some time at the pool, which was nice as well. All in all, a nice hotel which was clean and convenient to many of the downtown attractions.

Excellent stay at the Marriott!
My husband and I arrived from the East Coast at 10 PM on a Thursday evening for a 4 night stay. We were greeted by the valet and he quickly helped us with our bags. There was absolutely no line at check-in. I had requested a feather free room due to allergies. They originally did not have this request in their computer but they quickly and efficiently changed our room. We had booked a king bay view room on the hotel website. Make sure you check it out. They were running a special stay 3 nights get the 4th free. What an incredible savings this was.
Our room was in the south tower with a gorgeous view of Coronado Island, the pool, and Seaport Village. The room was clean-no hair, soap scum, etc. as other guest has mentioned. The bed was extremely comfortable. The room was a good size and had a chair with ottoman, a desk, and an armoire with TV. The bathroom was spacious and the bath products were very nice. You do hear the train occasionally but it really did not bother us much.
The location of this hotel is one of the best in the area. Only a 5 minute walk to Seaport Village and the Gaslamp Quarter. If you stay directly in the Gaslamp you will have considerable noise due to the large amount of bars and restaurants. The USS Midway was a 10 minute walk and well worth the trip.
Valet is a must. Call down when you leave your room and the car will be waiting. They were always very polite and asked each time if we needed directions. This was helpful since we have never been to San Diego before.
We had room service one morning for a quick start to the day. Otherwise we only had drinks at the hotel.
The hotel was full but we never experienced any problems with the service. Rooms were cleaned promptly and staff was overly helpful. We will definately stay at the Marriott Marina when we return to San Diego.

EXCELLENT LOCATION.

Rooms are as described and seen online in hotel site photos and at trip advisor. The rooms are basically clean. Extra touches you would expect from this "four sar" hotel were missing. For example, bathroom still ahd some soap scum on the saop holder, a few "stray" hairs"in the bathroom, and the carpet looked like it may have just been quickly swept. But overall, a clean roiom. The bed was very comfortable, with a thick comforter with duvet. The bath products were also nice.

The room was ample size, average as business hotels go.

This is a convention hotel and is very busy.

The pool area is nice. It also has a large workout area.

Lots of nice places to eat and drink on site. The breakfast buffet at $18 is EXCELLENT and includes made to order omlets and waffles, plus almost everything you could ask for in a breakfast buffet, all very tasty. Offered @ $14 if you forgo the meat and omlets. INCLUDES your juices and coffess. A definate must before you start your day.

As for check-in, we reserved a KING (and then reconfirmed to make sure), and were given a double. We complained and were moved. Many of our co-workers were not as lucky and got stuck with two doubles.

The hotel left three anoying solisitations for the MARRIOTT VACATION CLUB (time share?) on the phone.

We checked-in late (midnight) and had to wait to check-in as they had just one person at the desk.

The LOCATION is outstanding. Ask for a bay view. It was great.

A "nice" hotel that just needs to work on the "details."

Hope this helps.

I had read the reviews of his hotel before going so I was expecting the noise train to pass around 6am. The first time it's scary, the next morning you're ok with it. However, better windows would help. The room was very clean and a very good size. However the matresses are in need to be changed as they are just too soft. The location of this hotel is perfect for business as well as family trips.

This was one of the best hotel experiences I've ever had. I was there on business for three days and from the moment I stepped out of my car until the moment I regretfully had to leave, every staff member was friendly, professional and helpful. I was using Marriott Rewards for the first time and had my room upgraded to a bay view in the South Tower. The beds and the pillows were amazing--the most comfortable I've ever had! (Too bad I didn't take an empty suitcase!). The bed was like sleeping on a dozen quilts and there were about 7 stay fluffy pillows. I'm sorry I didn't bring a bathing suit because the sparkling pool looked so inviting, very large with waterfalls and a hydrospa.
It was a bit pricey in the restaurants, but there were many to chose from. Plus being in the downtown area you can walk to the Seaport Village and Gaslamp quarter in only a few minutes.
A lot of hotels are nice and accommodating, but like I said in the beginning, it was the staff that really made a difference. Always smiling, anticipating your every need, just plain out friendly. Quite a change from other "fancy" hotels I've stayed at. Room rate was $131 a night for one king size bed or two queen beds.
