“Hotel is average - unless you upgrade to the Club Level then it is OK”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 22, 2013

Hotel Rooms: Ours had recently been renovated and was in great condition. The views from the rooms are fantastic.

Pool: needs an entire overhaul. It is not competitive in today's market. It was actually off putting.

Layout for Meetings: The layout of this hotel as it relates to meetings and events is poor. Everything is spread out and there really isn't an area where everyone can congregate.

Club Room: While the Hyatt does not have the best club room - it did make this hotel a much nicer experience. The breakfast was very good, staff was great. Pre- dinner service was great, although desert service and afternoon service could be better.

Nice hotel first off. Rude entitled staff and culture that thinks its OK to nickle and dime you for every move. Further the area has the smell of a 'tourist trap" and this may help produce the "nickle and dime entitlement." The restaurant on site including Sally's is an absolute joke. Don't kid your self into thinking the advertised price, already ridiculous, does not include 26 parking per night, 30% tax, no internet, various other taxes and a non-responsive staff.

Great looks poor quality.

Dear Shinstashoebuffalo,

Thank you for so much for your candid comments about your most recent stay with us at our hotel. We pay close attention to these reviews in order for us to grow and evolve as needed. That being said I am sorry that your stay with us was not the greatest. Service is and will always be our number one priority and I have forwarded these comments to our Director of Rooms in order to ensure our staff is doing everything they can to make our guests comfortable during their stay. I am also sorry to hear that you were unaware of the taxes charged along with your rate, but I ensure you those taxes are the same among all downtown San Diego hotels. We do feel our parking is priced comparably to the local area.

Once again, thank you so much for you review and we look forward to welcoming you back to America’s Finest City.

We frequently visit San Diego and have stayed in various hotels in various areas. From the moment we stepped into the Manchester we loved it! It is definitely Grand! The staff was courteous and professional. The lobby was clean and inviting. We were booked into one of the updated rooms. It was modern and on trend. It was very refreshing to see a new decor style. Beautiful views from the floor to ceiling windows. The bathroom clean and modern. The beds were so comfortable with textured high headboards. There was a lcd screen tv, refrigerator, coffee maker, etc.My son and husband enjoyed the rooftop sport courts while my daughter and I enjoyed the coffee bar in the lobby. I wish we had time to enjoy the gorgeous pool. I am a photographer and the rooms would be great for boudoir sessions or pre wedding sessions. The hotel felt more like a studio apartment than a hotel room. Great job Hyatt. We will definitely be visiting for a much longer stay next time!

Stayed at this hotel over labor day weekend. Nicely appointed, modern rooms. Large windows with beautiful bay views. This is a large hotel frequented by convention groups so check-in was very crowded. But the front desk is super efficient and quick checking people in, so there was barely any wait. Great location--walking distance to good restaurants, shopping and the pier. Internet is reasonably fast and reliable. Room service was lightening fast (less than 15 minutes from order to delivery) and the food was delicious. Really enjoyed my stay at the Grand Hyatt and it will be my first choice for future travel to San Diego whether it be for business or pleasure.

Room Tip: High floor with bay views are the best.

Spent two nights at this hotel for a conference and was pleased with everything about the hotel, except, the food and beverage prices are a bit steep.

Room 3228 in the Harbor Tower was awesome...the decor is very modern but the placement of the sofa and sofa table by the huge windows overlooking San Diego Bay were perfect for relaxing or working on computer, or having a snack. However, my colleage was on Floor 34 of the Harbor Tower and that view was even more incredible. Nice touch, coffee maker and refrigerator. Contrary to other posts, even thought several conferences were in the hotel, elevator wait time was mimimal.

A must is cocktails watching the sun set in the Harbor Tower's 40th Floor lounge.

This hotel is perfectly located...we walked to dinner in the Gas Lamp Quarters - easy walk. And the Seaport Village shops and restaurant was fun...i totally enjoyed the candlemaking shop.

Plans were to sit by the firepit by the pool on the 4th floor and enjoy a bottle of wine, but we were just too tired...next time.

Room Tip: At checkin I asked for Harbor Tower and the clerk was very accommodating.

Amazing view of the Coronado bridge and city lights from room 1715. Bed was comfortable. Room decor was nice (modern). Service was great. The lobby of this hotel is truly grand! No complaints. Will be returning in December.
Quick Tip: parking is $40 for valet and $26 for self park, however te self parking has in and out privileges for overnight guests.

First, the pros:

Service was really excellent. Check-in couldn't have gone more smoothly, everyone was extra-friendly, and the hotel went above and beyond to accommodate our dog who was traveling with us.

Oh, and it was useful and a nice touch to have a white noise machine integrated into the bedside alarm / iPod dock.

The cons, of which there was unfortunately many:

The level of amenities provided in the hotel was on the caliber of an airport Courtyard by Marriott, not a Hyatt -- and certainly not a "Grand Hyatt." No robes in the room. Cheap, flimsy towels. Little tiny bar of soap (but no liquid body wash). The foam hypo-allergenic pillows were horrible -- worse than old-school economy class airplane pillows. And the bedsheet was too small for the bed -- and didn't tuck all the way in. This is how beds are made, again, at two-star roadside motels, not Grand Hyatts. We did not sleep well (that we were across from a construction site did not help, but that is certainly not the hotel's fault in any way -- though a warning from the front desk about the noise might have been helpful).

The rooms were just gut-renovated, but the designers in charge should be fired. The bathrooms were far from luxurious - gloomy, narrow tubs, tiny sink/countertop consoles, cheap materials. And I have no idea what the floor tile is supposed to be -- it's ceramic but it has fake wood grains? Eeek. The leather sofa / daybed furnishings were totally uncomfortable -- every time you'd sit down, the leather cushion would slip off.

And to top it off, we used a suite upgrade to book us into a huge "conference" suite. Well - it was big, I'll give the room that. But not a square inch of the living room was inviting or even useable. The sectional L-shaped sofa was a built-in, bolted-to-the-floor contraption with uncomfortable "leather" cushions (see above -- that constantly slipped off). The sofa was not anywhere near the TV, which was mounted to a wall away from the sofa-- what was in front of the TV? Two uncomfortable, strangely shaped chairs that looked like the kind of chairs you see while at an airport gate waiting to board your flight. Did the chairs recline? No. So you're supposed to sit with your significant other on separate upright plastic chairs and watch television? Not really, no thanks. And then the dining table -- which was bar-height and surrounded by bar-height chairs. I mean, I guess this could work for some people. We found it an intrusion, and so dissonant from the rest of the room.

As for the public areas -- the hallways were claustrophobic. The ground-level areas were terribly dated -- it looks like a Las Vegas convention hotel in 1998. The faux-17th-Century murals throughout the lobby area are an especially tacky touch.

Overall, the cheap, non-stylish and completely non-functional design of the "renovated" rooms and the ornate, overly gaudy look of the public areas is TOTALLY off-brand for Hyatt. I have come to trust and rely on Hyatt, especially on allegedly higher-end properties like Grand Hyatts and Park Hyatts, for clean, modern lines, high functionality and sleek sophistication. The Manchester Grand Hyatt has none of this -- and quite frankly is disappointing in just about every respect other than the service, which stood out. This is a property that Hyatt should whip into shape or strip of its affiliation, STAT.

Green Features: The Grand Hyatt is allegedly environmentally friendly by not changing out towels or bed linens unless you specifically call the front desk -- cynics might call this lazy, and note that the standard is to leave your towels on the floor if you wish them to be refreshed.
