“False Claims of Allergy Free Comforters”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed December 30, 2012

The hotel is very nice. The lobby bar has very slow service (even when its dead)- but that is not atypical of hotel bars.

The rooms are quite nice and the views are great. The hotel is located very well.

After staying here for a few days, we noticed that we were getting sick. It was the down comforter and pillows provided by the hotel (nice for most people, but not with allergies).

Anyways, we requested they change the comforter out to a hypoallergenic comforter. They asked us to leave the room so they could change it out. After 1.5 hrs and 3 requests, I walked down to show the night HS manager that the hotel had not in-fact changed the comforter out and our sheets had not been changed.

While insisting this was not the case, I showed her a photo of our bed that I took on my phone. She agreed to have someone come up to resolve it.

When she arrived she brought us a blue/grey wool blanket (the kind you use when watching TV on the couch- not a comforter you would sleep with). I protested and requested she bring the type of comforter that they advertise on their website that are hypo allergenic. The night HS manager insisted that all of the comforters in the building were down feathered and the best they could do was offer us a blanket for the bed.

Room Tip: Avoid this hotel if you are allergic to down feathers

Dear mantazen,
Thank you for your candid comments here on TripAdvisor. We are happy to hear you enjoyed the guest rooms and bayfront location of the hotel. However, I am sorry to learn about your recent experience with our Respire Rooms. As mentioned on our website, I do want to clarify that these rooms undergo an additional six-step process to reduce airborne particles and minimize the presence of potential irritants. This process includes installation of a state-of-the-art air purification system and treatment of all fabrics and surfaces in the guestroom. All Respire by Hyatt rooms are installed and maintained on an ongoing basis by PURE Solutions NA.

The Respire by Hyatt - Hypo-Allergenic Rooms purification process includes:

-Application of PURE Shield and PURE Clean to minimize presence of allergens on carpet, upholstery and other surfaces in the room.
-One-time shock treatment to minimize irritants.
-Complete disinfection of Air Handling Unit and Installation of removable tea tree oil cartridge to maintain these conditions.
-Installation of hypo-allergenic mattress & pillow encasings.
-Installation of a powerful air purifier by Healthway, listed as a Class II Medical device by the F.D.A.
-Recertification every six months

Although we do currently use down feathered comforters in all rooms, we are purchasing non-down feathered comforters to offer guests with sensitivity to down feathers. Thank you for your comments, as this helps us to improve.

Warmest Regards,
Kristin Helms

Dear safioz,
Thank you for taking the time to provide us feedback after your recent stay. We are sorry to hear about your experience. You are correct, we have a dedicated pet floor reserved for our guests and their four-legged friends. We are happy to provide these pet-friendly accommodations, and also need to maintain appropriate noise levels in the guest corridors. This being said, I'm sorry how the noise level request was received. Please know I have shared your comments with our Executive Rooms Director so he can address internally. Again, thank you for providing feedback as this helps us to constantly improve ourselves.

We stayed here with our two children for one night in December 2012. The hotel is quite large and appears to be geared towards business travelers. We got a room with 2 queen beds and a view for a bargain price (50% off of what was listed on hyatt.com) through a discount travel website.

The room was clean, well decorated, modern, and very comfortable. The hotel was in a great location for sight-seeing (walking distance to the USS Midway, Children’s museum, departure point for whale watching tours, convention center, parks, marina, restaurants, etc.). The fitness center is excellent.

I would absolutely stay here again if I could get a good rate or if I were travelling for business. Self- parking is $26 per night, there is a fee for internet usage, fee for the business center, the on-site restaurants are expensive, etc. -- so, if you are paying for all of this out of pocket, it could add up fast. Cost aside, I have no complaints. It is a lovely property.

We are 7 days into a 9 day stay at the Hyatt. If they last two days are as good as the first 7, we won't have any complaints. We arrived three days before Christmas. Everything was smooth and we got a great room.

We booked in June so didn't know that the hotel would be hosting a bowl football team. Expected loud and boisterous - got quiet and polite. Didn't hear anything disruptive after Baylor won, so appreciated the courtesy. Never heard any loud outside noises. The trolley track warnings were there, but not intrusive.

Have a great view of the bay. Bed is comfortable, pillows a little soft for my taste, but put two together and good to go. We got the "park and surf" package, which is a great value based on the cost of parking and the Internet. As those costs were in included in the cost of our room, it was a wash because to look for our room online now, the room costs the same w/o parking and Internet.

My husband was sick for six of the seven days, so he was glad for the quiet since he basically didn't leave the room.

We all enjoyed our stay at this hotel over Christmas. The newly refurbished bedrooms are excellent, and they have probably the largest widescreen TV of any hotel that I have stayed in. We had amazing views over San Diego Marina and Bay. The staff we encountered were all very friendly and helfpul.

We had the Christmas Day Buffet at Laels, which was expensive but of a very high standard. I would also recommend the raspberry scones for breakfast at The Deli.

Room Tip: Request a newly refurbished room with a bay view, the higher up the better the view.

Everyone, from the check-in clerk to the bell desk to the concierge wanted to bend over backwards to make our 1-night stay be perfect. We were very pleased with our room and impressed by the tall lobby with its huge paintings. The view from the 40th floor lounge wasn't bad either. Several days after our stay, they allowed us to store our luggage for a few hours while we wandered the gaslight quarter, as our flight was much later. Then they gave us a ride to the airport in their Denali for less than a cab ride, and a friendly ride at that. Next time w're in San Diego, we'll stay at the Hyatt!

Room Tip: Get a triple-A package room.
