“Good value and nice place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 21, 2013

The grounds are expansive and tropical. I especially liked the view from my room high in the tower. Theses rooms have a large balcony. The vistas from all sides are quite beautiful. The pools were nice. I'd definitely stay there again!

What a fun experience! The dancers transported us through a tour of the Polynesian islands with their excellent introduction of traditional dances. Both the dances & the location were beautiful. As the moon rose over the bay, the fire dancers entertained us with their skills. Thank you Melissa Armstrong & Courtney Guillory for providing us the opportunity to "go to the islands" without leaving San Diego. By the way, the Jr Intern at our table is going to make a great employee one day - customer service comes naturally to him!

My wife and I had a bay front king suite. We arrived in our room to find it next to the outdoor seating for the bar which is extremely noisy. Front desk said they could only move us one room away. No room should have this much noise. Hotel comped our $13 a day self parking. I have heard less than stellar remarks about the tower rooms and the bay front are supposed to be the best. The room had a musty smell, two water damage bubbles on the ceiling that had been painted over. The restroom was clean. Overall the room looked pretty tired. Here you pay for location not quality. The grounds are cute Polynesian themed but the entire property has not been maintained to substantiate the rates.

Room Tip: Bay front first floor would be ideal but away from the lobby. We had #503 and the noise was terrible...

We were very sorry to hear that your trip did not live up to your expectations. Our goal it to ensure that all our guest have a sound and restful experience and the noise level is being addressed with both the restaurant and the security department so future guest do not have the same experience. I was glad to see our team did try to make an effort make the situation hole by crediting your account. We hope you will give us another try so you may experience why so many people return to The Catamaran year after year.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Catamaran Resort Hotel! The staff members were very helpful and friendly. We originally booked a room facing the gardens/pool, but kept reading reviews about how wonderful the bay view rooms were. My husband called to see how much it would be to get a view facing the bay. They quoted us $60. a night more, so we declined. When we arrived the lady at the desk asked if we would like to upgrade to a bay view room with no additional charge...what a nice surprise! We were on the 9th floor and had a great view! We watched the fireworks from Sea World at 9:55 pm and even watched part of a Luau from our balcony(free of charge). Mission Bay is beautiful...I loved to wake up and go right to the balcony! We took the free bay cruise, rode bikes along the bay and walked two blocks to Mission Beach! We also enjoyed a simple breakfast out on the restaurant patio (just watch out for the seagulls who love to steal bacon). We went to Hawaii when we were first married and this place definitely reminded us of our time there. The entrance where we checked in was open-aired with an indoor waterfall. The grounds were beautifully kept with a little stream full of large goldfish and ducks. Each day the staff put out some beautiful colorful Macaw birds on special perches so you could walk by and enjoy them or try to get them to talk to you. The outdoor pool and the hot tub were huge and I really enjoyed my time in the water! The only draw back was the beach chairs and umbrellas that the staff put out were taken rather quickly even when no one was actually sitting in them. People should not be allowed to put a hotel towel there and go away for an hour or more and except to still have the chairs. There needs to be some check-out system.
Some great restaurants in the area are Tony Loma's for supper(just across the street), The Mission Cafe(go left and walk about 5 bocks..San Jose St.) for wonderful breakfast and if you want to go to La Jolla beach, Wahoo's Fish Taco is really good for the money!

Trying not to repeat what others have said. Chose hotel for location (we flew into San Diego to attend a Taylor Swift concert at the Sports Arena)... great being on the Bay and lots of fun places to walk along Pacific and Mission Beaches. Unique property. Not a cookie-cutter chain hotel experience. We paid and extra $50/night to have a "special request" room on the ground floor, bay front, 600 building. Since this was a "special" trip it was worth it. Room was very clean. Comfortable mattress. Self parking an extra $13/day. All to be expected. The birds and the gardens make it all feel special. I can see how if you happened to stay at the same time as some other large/noisy group it would be a problem, but that's true of any hotel. Staff was very helpful and gracious. We could see the Sea World fireworks at 9pm across the bay from our room. Didn't have time to enjoy the Bahia Belle or rent bikes or a lot of other things, so I would assess that this is a great place for a family vacation.

Room Tip: 600 building, bayfront is ++

OK, I am here on a family reunion and I am not paying, so I should not complain, however I know our patriarch is paying over $400 per night for water front rooms and I would expect better. I couldn't understand the desk clerk. When I went back for an extra card key, they told me it was not possible we were in the room they had just sent me to and spent 20 minutes figuring it out Tap water is notoriously bad in San Diego, so they charge $3.50 for a small bottle in you room. Loud partying went on until after 1 am outside our window. The room coffee is Farmer brother's; is that an anachronistic joke or are they trying to save money? This place may have historic value for the blue hair set
I recommend you stay in one of San Diego's many suite Inns, have a betterroom , parking, free breakfast for 1/3 the cost.

Thank you for your review of The Catamaran Resort. I was very upset to hear that our Front Desk did not deliver exceptional service during your stay. Although technology can have it’s small issues, it clearly sounds as if we could have done a better job of preventing this from affecting your stay. Yes we do offer one-liter bottles of spring water in the rooms but have not heard complaints about the $3.50 charge for them. This is actually quite a low price for that size and because we do not charge resort fees like our competition we try to keep costs down. We hope you will give us another try, as I know we would exceed your expectations.

The sunset luaus at the Catamaran are absolutely fantastic. The performers were flawless and the food was excellent. The luau takes visitors through a journey of the Polynesian Islands traditions and dances, complete with a fire-dancing grand finale. Our hostesses Melissa Armstrong and Corey Simone were absolutely wonderful, spoiling us with superb service, making the night one not soon forgotten. Can't wait to visit again next year!
