“Superb location, but....”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 11, 2012

Location - 5
Gardens, pool, grounds - 5
Rooms - 1

The location of this place is perfect, it is on the lagoon on one side and about 100 yards straight to Pacific beach on the other. The grounds are very tropical with lush palm trees everywhere, parrots and various ducks sharing the gardens. The pool area is very nice too. This gives it a full on 'holiday' feel.
The rooms however haven't seen maintenance since they were built in what must be the 70's, if not earlier. It was quite incredible. The smell of old carpet hangs around, the bed linen had faded over the years and must be 30 years old (like when gold velvet goes smooth and very light yellow and shiny with oil stains!), there were tears in the bed sheets, the lamps didn't work, the kitchenette appliances were rusted and falling apart etc., the list goes on.
It's amazing that for such a great place from the outside view, the rooms were so shabby.
I'm not saying we didn't enjoy our stay, we did but I would give it serious thought about staying there again unless the rooms were modernised, even if only slightly.

Resort is located on the bay and one(1) short block to the sea. Great Location. We like to walk each day so for us it is wonderful. The resort restaurant is very good especially breakfast looking East across the beautful bay. The bar at happy hour had excellant musical entertainment plus good appetizers. Grounds and buildings are meticulously maintained including Koi ponds with duck preserve, do not miss the tropical parrot habitat open each day. Our Tower suite had ocean and sunset view, and was immaculately clean and neat. This was not our first visit and we will be returning soon!

Room Tip: Room with a kitchen, and depending on taste higher than four floor in Tower for view, north side for...

Great location!!! The view from our bay view room was wonderful. The rooms are a little dated but the location to the bay and the beach on the ocean side couldn't get any better. We were not really even in our room because we spent most of our time outside enjoying the water sport activties.

There is a big difference between two queen sized beds and two full (also known as double) sized beds. My husband is very tall and was miserable because we were stuck in a room with full beds, even though our reservation was for double beds. When I told the front desk, they said they were all booked (holiday weekend) and that it wasn't their fault since I made the reservations through a 3rd party vendor. I have never, ever before heard of a hotel having double beds instead of queen beds. Totally ridiculous. Also, the room was DIRTY. There was a dirty sock by one of the beds, from the previous guest, and clumps of dirt on the ceiling and tons of dirt clumps in the ceiling fire sprinklers and bugs (don't know what kind) IN the refrigerator AND the electric outlet by the coffee make was broken (cords/plugs would fall out and not stay in because it was so stripped). The sinks were broken, the toilet wouldn't flush unless you held down the handle and counted to 20, the tub was GROSS and not clean. Now for the good things. The fish ponds and waterfalls are awesome for kids. The free boat ride is cute. The parrots are cool for little kids. The pool staff were nice and helpful. The location is very convenient with the Bay Side ocean on the grounds and the regular beach less than a block away. HOWEVER, we do not feel like we got our $525 worth due to the nasty, gross, dirty, broken, run-down room. I would have been happy if I had paid $100 a night, but for this kind of money, I expected cleanliness, working plumbing and working electricity. p.s. the TV remote was broken too.

We are terribly sorry to disappoint you on your recent visit. When we are in a sellout mode on holiday weekends moving guests is extremely difficult. I am sorry we were unable to accommodate your requests. There is no excuse for our rooms not being cleaned we strive for excellence in that area. I hope you may visit again in a slower period or make your reservations through our telephone agents so we can better address your needs. Thank you for your comments.

Just got back from Labor Day weekend at the Catamaran. If we hadn't paid $250 a night for a basic room I probably would have rated 3.5 stars but at what we paid, it wasn't worth it.

The good:

Decent location to the beach and the bay. Really nice grounds.

The bad:

The tower is awful so if you get a chance request something in the other 2-story units. Our room was old. Lousy loud window air conditioner. Reminded me of being at a Red Roof Inn or equivalent. Lots of road noise as the sliders are old and not at all sound proofed.

Too many kids. Mission Beach had too many drunk college students. I'm sure on any other weekend it's a much better place.

We stayed at the Catamaran Resort and Spa 8-7 thru 8-9 while in San Diego for a wedding. We wanted to visit Sea World for a couple of days before the festivities began. I was traveling with my wife and seven year old granddaughter.
Upon check in I thought the place was a little dated.
Room was just ok. It was dated but clean. The air condition worked well but dripped a steady stream of condensation from the vent in the ceiling. I put a trash can under it. I contacted the front desk but it did not get repaired until the next day. Hung out at the pool for a while which was full of kids. This was no big deal because granddaughter made a friend and Papa was able to have a beer and relax…until….some kid pooped in the pool and it had to be shut down. This is no fault of the hotel, the staff did a good job getting all kids out and pool area roped off with caution tape. This was a bummer but funny in that it was somewhat like a scene from Caddy Shack.
This place grew on me with a little time. The grounds were beautiful especially at sunset. You could watch the fireworks from Sea World at night. Breakfast at the restaurant was great and the staff friendly. It seems like the longer we were there the more we liked the Catamaran. We would stay again.

Loved the grounds with all the plants and bird life! The staff were all very friendly and helpful as well. They always had a hello and a smile when you would walk into the lobby. The room had private views of the bay which were nice and quiet. The bed was amazing! A pillowtop mattress that made me not want to get up even though there was an ocean I wanted to get out and see every day.
