“Scenic place to stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 9, 2014

We stayed for 3 days. Great place to stay if you like boats and ships. We had Naval ships private yachts sailboats and jet skis to watch the Naval base was across the harbor so lots of activity to observe. Hotel is on a quiet dead end island so great to walk around, however it is approximately 20-30 min from downtown by car. Restaurant had great food. Pool was clean and not over crowded. Pool side drinks were a nice addition. Would recommend for families looking for a great place to stay. Front desk staff friendly as well as Broc and Brandon the shuttle drivers great ambassadors for the hotel

This is my second stay at this hotel. Both visits have been just wonderful chances to relax and enjoy San Diego Shelter Island / Point Loma area fully. The rooms are spacious and and have very comfortable patios, which help me enjoy the weather. Even when it is raining. The Blue Wave Restaurant is marvelous; providing excellent service, wonderfully prepared food, and a good wine list that compares well with any of the great San Diego restaurants. Best of all, I didn't have to drive to dinner. Such convenience and quality right at Island Palms.

It is such a shame we only had two nights at this BW property because we all loved it. Shelter Island is very long and narrow and consists of four resort hotels and marinas and a few restaurants. The whole atmosphere in this resort brings Ernest Hemingway to mind for some strange reason. It must be all the brown wooden shutters, very Key West. The property was originally built in the 1950's but there is no sign of that now. It is made up of a number of different buildings, none more than three stories high and about 250 rooms/suites in total. We stayed in the Casa Marina building which is farthest from the lobby and if you ever stay here in a queen/queen, book a room in that building and ask for a room overlooking the marina rather than the bay as the bayside has a huge carpark in front of it that would obstruct the view. We had an awesome close-up view of the marina from our balcony!

There are two outdoor pools and two hot tubs available and one of them has an outdoor fireplace that you can relax in front of with a view of the marina! They have two large tennis courts on-property and guests can borrow rackets and balls for free. They even have complimentary bike rentals. And an on-site laundry! We opted to park in the large carpark across the road for free rather than use their on-site parking for a fee.

Shelter Island is a perfect location with the airport close by and the Old Town and Gaslamp Quarter less than 15 minutes' drive away. I would definitely opt to stay in this area rather than the city. It is also incredibly easy to get to if you are coming from the north. There is no breakfast included at this property but we drove five minutes' down the road and stocked up at Ralphs (and if you say you are a visiting guest, they will give you the discounts normally only afforded to Ralphs cardholders). Then we just popped it all into the fridge!

Finally, all front desk staff we encountered, about five of them, were 100% enthusiastic and service-minded. I was really impressed and would definitely stay here again!

Room Tip: Choose a room facing the marina

We stayed here during comic con and they increased the price of the rooms a lot. No breakfast served really no place to eat unless you wanted to eat at one of the hotels. No stores close by if you needed anything I have stayed in much better places for much cheaper prices if I didn't book in advance and would on not had to pay cancel fees and knew more about the hotel I would of stayed some place else. Will not stay again.

Thank you for your review and I sincerely apologize for the poor experience.

Comic Con is the busiest time of the year here in San Diego and as a result of this room prices are up throughout the city. As hotel rooms are in such short supply during this time the Comic Con housing bureau is the one that places strict cancellation policies on the rooms associated with the convention in order to ensure that everyone who is traveling for Comic Con has a room available for them.

Our Blue Wave Bar & Grill is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily from 6:30 am to 10 pm and we offer room service. We also have four restaurants within ¾ of a mile and over 12 restaurants within 2 miles. Liberty Station shopping area is approximately 3 miles away, with Downtown, San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park and Sea World all within 10 miles of the hotel.

We decided to have our wedding here and make it easy for all out of town guests and for ourselves, by booking all of our activities in one place. I had my bridal shower here, then the rehearsal dinner, wedding, and even a post wedidng brunch. In short, I was at this location many, many times! (June/July 2014) All of the staff members are friendly and very customer service oriented. All of our events were a success, very classy, fun, and each in a different room/location, as they have options to choose from, so that created a nice variety. We were very impressed and so happy with how everything went. Lauren is whom we worked with and she went above and beyond for us, making the whole process smooth and stress free, we had the best wedding ever! As far as the hotel rooms go, the location is unique for the fact that each of the 3 buildings has a different personality. Our suite was in the Casa Del Mar, which is more modern, my parents were in Casa Marina, which they said was more private, and the bridal party was in Island Palms, that is where we all got ready, it was a nice mix of tropical and quaint feeling. They all loved their rooms and all of our rooms faced the marina side, so great views! The location was perfect for us because it was a great way to showcase the city we love by being on the water, but also by being accomodating to our guests due to bike rentals and free airport shuttle service they offer. I have to point out that the Blue Wave Bar and Grill inside the hotel, also has yummy food and drink options, and that the food for our wedding was actually even more delicious then when we had gone in for our tastings. Whether a local, or out of towner, you will not be disappointed at Island Palms.

Room Tip: If staying for the first time, treat yourself and get a suite with a marina view. The opposite side...

In my previous review I mentioned that the only thing wrong was that we could not stay longer. On this trip we stayed for a week. Enjoyed every minute. Location and setting are excellent. Special mention to the fine staff:front desk (Kyle, Danny, Caitlan), Jessica in reservations, and Robin and Jasmin in the restaurant. You all made our stay fantastic. We will be back again.

I really loved staying here and was pleasantly surprised by how nice the hotel was, but especially by its beautiful location right on the marina. Watching the sunset from the bar was stunning. The rooms are spacious and clean. Shelter Island is a wonderful place to stay with easy access to downtown San Diego.

Room Tip: As for a room in the newer section overlooking the marina
