“Beautiful hotel and location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2013

Traveled with my family for vacation and we all were very happy with the hotel. Felt like we were in a tropical resort. Ate dinner and breakfast at the restaurant and breakfast was much better than dinner, although you can't beat the view or the convenience. Overall we were very happy and would stay here again.

Everything was wonderful! I got married in San Diego and stayed here for two nights as my honeymoon! We stayed in the newer section of the property! It was a wonderful room, great amenities, and beautiful location! Bed was comfortable! All around a great stay and fabulous hotel!

This is a nice hotel in a good location handy for the airport and central San Diego. Parking can be an issue late at night but we always found a space.
Main challenge is making sure you get a good room! One of our rooms was in the new wing and was huge with very good facilities an a lovely balcony to sit on. The other was on the ground floor and in the old part of the hotel. It had nowhere to sit outside and was crampt with a small dark shower, noisy air conditioning, poor sound proofing and ineffective wifi. Fortunately it did face the marina - if it had been on the ground floor and faced the car park, we would have checked out and gone home.
Review wouldnt be complete without mentioning the tennis courts which are excellent. Swim pools nice but more sun beds are needed in the smaller pool.

Room Tip: Make sure you are clear in advance on the location and type of room you have booked

I generally like Best Western hotels but this one has been one of the best I've ever stayed at due to the staff. I made our reservations, explained we were touring the UC San Diego and San Diego State campuses and was immediately provided with a student discount and coupons for the continental breakfast. When we arrived, the hospitality just got better and better. At check-in, Nicki provided me with great recommendations for local restaurants since we were taking my nephews (both in the Navy) to dinner and she even gave us a coupon for a free appetizer. I had to call down to the front desk a couple of times and Allison was very helpful. At some other hotels (Hyatt, Marriott) I have felt that my call or question to the front desk was a burden and the attitude has been less than helpful so I was really pleased with her response - again, I should have known. The room was wonderful, clean, tidy and very comfortable but I expect that from Best Western. The hotel itself is in the most beautiful of settings, quiet grounds and you feel like you are at a very upscale resort. The balcony is a comfortable size and makes sitting outside with coffee in the morning extremely pleasant. If you are going to San Diego for any reason, I highly recommend staying at this hotel, if not for the comfortable beds, for the great people. Make sure you have breakfast at the restaurant and sit outside and have one of their jalapeno Bloody Mary's -amazing. The view is spectacular and Robin is an outstanding server. She even offered a to go cup for coffee which was really good coffee.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Casa Marina. I understand it is the newer section.

My wife and I had a suite right on the waters edge. We had a patio that over looked the harbor so we could look at all the different boats that were docked in the harbor. We spent time in the pool area just relaxing, it was a great time. Lots of great food and things to do in San Diego like Balboa park, Sea World and much more. Oh yes the weather is great too.

We stayed in the new Casa Marina building and had a beautiful room which was spacious, clean and comfortable. Although we were not on the Marina side of the building, so were overlooking the car park, we still had a great view across San Diego bay, and enjoyed watching the range of boats coming and going.

We had no problems parking, and were always able to find a space - usually just outside the building.

The location is great - both for a run or walk along Shelter Island and also for driving to any location around San Diego.

One slight disappointment was the restaurant, which was a little pricey and the menu range wasn't as big as it might be. We also experienced staff clearing and stripping down tables all around us while we were still eating at 9.30, even through it was Saturday night and therefore open until 10.00.

Apart from that, we had no other problems. Staff were helpful with any queries or requests we made, and the facilities were all excellent, including 2 beautiful pools.

Our room, a junior suite, was in the Casa del Mar and had a partial view of San Diego Bay. We were able to park for free very close to our room. The room had the range of amenities expected for a suite, though we didn't have a chance to use everything. It was a quiet setting and evening and morning walks along either the bay or the marina were interesting and relaxing. We opted for no breakfast with our room payment, but ended up eating in the restaurant due to changes in our plans. It was a good, substantial breakfast. The free wifi signal was satisfactory. We had a pleasant stay and will be staying there again as we visit our daughter who is attending college in San Diego. The hotel gives a discount to parents of SDSU students.
