“Don't Let the Best Western Brand Deter You”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 7, 2013

When I normally hear the best Western name in hotels I think low budget, bare bones. But the Island Palms changed my mind. The employees could not be friendlier and more accommodating. Always a smile and eagerness to serve. Kudos to Dale, night auditor who went out of his way to solve an issue& with a big smile.

The Casa Mar rooms were exceptional- island decor, free wifi and throughly clean. Plus the incredible marina view from your patio. The reason for 4 vs 5 is the paper thin walls, very hard bed & noisy A\C - but the rest was so good I can forgive a little these negatives. The restaurant had excellent food & service. Good happy hour drinks & food specials in lounge.

While not ideal location for business events at convention center downtown - if you're in SD for vacation don't stay in Mission Valley - Island Palms excellent for all SD has to offer by car.

Room Tip: Casa Mar rooms- island decor & gorgeous marina view

Had to come down to San Diego on business, stayed at the Best Western Island Palms. Nice room, nice views and excellent staff. Not to crazy about the idea that you need to purchase more Bandwidth for your computer and devices (iPod/Cell Phone), but other than that, it's nice & Free parking

Stayed here 10/24/12 and had a lovely suite on top floor overlooking marina. Room was spotless and bed very comfortable. Towels and bed linens top notch. Dining area had a very nice table and 4 chairs; living area had a comfortable couch and chairs; nice flat screen to watch the World Series! Across the street from this hotel is the bay side with fantastic views of San Diego and a nice paved, walking area. This hotel will also loan you bikes to explore the area at no charge!

Did not eat at their restaurant so cannot comment there.

Would stay here again.

Our last visit there we stayed in the Casa Del Mar property and were very happy with both the staff and the room..I hate to post about this as it is already hard to get a reservation there, apparently the world has found out about the EXCELLENT service,,beautiful rooms, beautiful grounds & a great water view.Thank you for a wonderful weekend, we will return!! Oh yes did I mention how absolutely clean everything is at the property..Management should be very proud of the entire staff..

Room Tip: Have stayed there a few times, all the rooms are great

The "deluxe water view" room was on the ground floor, at eye level with the boats, so there wasn't much of a water view. That was disappointing, but sharing a non-soundproof wall with the public men's restroom (which is open to all the men at the large marina?) was not very pleasant--TMI first thing in the morning, especially if you have children! But what soured us on the stay was the lack of free airport transportation, as advertised. When I arrived at the airport at 8:30 p.m., the shuttle had stopped for the night, we were told. I was reimbursed for that cab fare at the front desk, but when we tried to take the shuttle the next morning at 8:30 a.m. to pick up a car at the airport, we were told it wasn't running again, and wouldn't be until 3:30 that afternoon. Needless to say, we didn't even bother trying to get a 4:30 a.m. shuttle for our departure, so we spent more than expected on transportation. Also, the bar had a new menu our last night there, but neglected to explain that not all the selections were half price (as they had been the first two nights we ate there). The food was good, but we might have chosen to eat elsewhere if we'd known about the change in pricing. The front desk staff didn't seem particulalry interested in accommodating guests. You get what you pay for, I guess.

My wife and I recently stayed one night at this property. We were greeted by a very friendly gentleman at the front desk (Danny) and he immediately had us feeling at home. The grounds of this hotel are very well kept and the immediate area is a treat, with the harbor and a fishing pier directly across the street. The are numerous local place to eat on Shelter Island or if you prefer, head downtown to the Gaslamp District for an endless selection of restaurants and bars. The hotel has very updated rooms with first class amenities including newer bedding, mattresses , ceiling fans and shower heads. The counters are even tile and very attractive. It can be noisy at times because of the Naval/Marine bases nearby, but aside from that this is an excellent place to stay for a night or a week!
