“Completely awesome!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 30, 2012

My family and I wanted to visit San Diego and had no idea where to stay. My husband thought staying closer to La Jolla would be better, but I happened to talk to a couple who visits San Diego rather frequently and they recommended the Best Western Blue Sea Lodge. With the multitude of choices out there, this sounded exactly like what my family wanted. Affordable, FABULOUS location, beachfront, pool and view, and they delivered on every front! We absolutely loved it and will definitely go back! We got a partial ocean view room, and our balcony overlooked the pool and the ocean - we left our sliding glass door open (screen locked, of course) every night and fell asleep to the sounds of the waves on the beach! Absolutely loved the Pacific/Mission Beach area, and we traveled to a Padres game, Old Town, La Jolla and Mission Trails for hiking very quickly and easily! Perfect vaca for this Midwestern family!

The location was perfect because it was on the beach. We had several problems from the beginning. First when we booked our reservation they had a free continental breakfast which was why we booked at this hotel to begin with. I am not sure when, but they stopped providing the breakfast their customers. Next we called a few weeks before because my mother in law was going to be staying there as well and we were hoping to get ajoining rooms this way if my husband and I wanted to go out she could watch the kids by leaving the ajoining room door open. They told us that the hotel didn't have any, which we later found out was a lie. Then the first night we were there the A/C in my mother in law's room went out. We asked if there were any rooms on our floor that she could move to and they stated that there was nothing on our floor. We found out that there was no one on either side of us the first three days we were there, however, the front desk insisted that there was no room on our floor and that she would have to move to a completely different building. Overall the trip was decent, once we stopped asking for any kind of help from the front desk.

This hotel has a great location. If you are looking for a 3 star or 4 star this isn't it.What you pay for here is the location take that away and the price should be 60 bucks a night. My family and i loved being so close to the beach and everything Pacific Beach had to offer, the staff were great and our room was clean. We had an ocean view room and loved having the door opened listening to the waves.

We arrived at 9:00 pm without a reservation and received the walk-in rate, which was lower than our military and AAA rates. They were able to accommodate us with a quite corner room as requested. The sunken bathtub was awesome. There was also a balcony a in our room, which is good if you smoke. We had a problem with the clarity of the picture on the tv so maintenance came up to fix it but wasn't able to, so they gave us another room. The customer service was so good that we decided to stay another day. It was 4th of July weekend and we were able to book the same room for another night even though they were at full capacity. The rates had increased over night for the holiday weekend, and they were nice enough to offer us the room at the original walk-in rate, which was substantially less, all least by half. I would definitely stay there again, and I highly recommend it for couples and families because there's a lot of fun to be had there. Everything is within walking distance.

We arrive at Best Western and was pleasantly surprised to find our room was upgraded free from a Ocean View Queen to our choice of oceanfront room. We choose the Queen mini suite with small kitchen on the top level directly oceanfront: beautiful room. Michelle at the front desk provided excellent customer service, very polite and friendly, with a wonderful attitude and exhibited all the wonderful assets providing excellent customer service: the manager Ruben Garza has a wonderful employee working for him. The room was comfortable: direct oceanfront, beautiful view and quite with the relaxing sound of the ocean. The room was clean, there was a sofa, minibar (not stocked), refrig, microwave and safe. The bed and pillows very comfortable. Great location: on the boardwalk and easy walk to everything. The pool and jacuzzi was great. The hotel even offered complementary beach chairs to use while being a quest. The only negative was having to pay for parking and no complimentary breakfast. Regardless, it was a wonderful stay and Michelle was absolutely wonderful.

Room Tip: Higher level the best and if possible ocean front offer the best room. Ask for Michelle !

We travel extensively and rely on reviews such as TripAdvisor to select the hotels we stay in. Unfortunately, the reviews for this hotel really were not accurate. It seems to us that most of the reviewers never really stayed in a 4 or 5 star hotel and were overly impressed by the location of this hotel. The good points first: the location is great, right on the beach; the pool area is very nice; the front desk people were very friendly and helpful; the rooms did have full or partial ocean views. The bad points: the free breakfast promised for stays of 4 days or more was not honored; the rooms provided a trip back to the 1970's and were screaming for updating; the beds were quite uncomfortable and the pillows had hard lumps; the mirrors in the room had "stuff" on them and were not cleaned; we were able to listen to our neighbors flushing their toilets and taking showers as well as coughing and talking through the walls; the rooms were very small and with our suitcases open on provided racks, we could barely walk around the room; several of the locals we spoke to in the neighborhood had the same opinion of this hotel with the most favorable comment being that the place was "tired". After one night we checked out and went to another hotel.

Room Tip: If you must stay at this hotel and you do not like street noise, you should stay at one of the rooms...

I have stayed here several times. The location is excellent, and all of the staff that I have ever had contact with have been well trained, friendly and helpful. The hotel is always clean and well maintained and all needs and requests are promptly met with a smile.
