“San Diego trip”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2012

This hotel is a nice place to stay. We spent 3 nights here within a 2 week period and the only thing that I can complain about is that on the second night that we stayed, we had a "suite" and I had requested a "king" and ended up with 2 beds in the room. I will give the front desk a big plus on sending my cell phone overnight to Hawaii, we left it in the room and I called from the airport on our way to Hawaii and asked them to overnight the phone and I received it within 2 days which I thought was great service. The front desk was very pleasant and would recommend this hotel to everyone. The rooms are a little outdated but beds were very comfortable.

Room Tip: Any place withing the hotel is a good spot. There are no "ocean front" rooms unless you ge...

Stayed here from October 24-November 1 2012. We are from New Jersey and came out for just a few days to attend a family wedding, but ended up staying a little longer than expected due to Hurricane Sandy back home. So we had extra time to sample area restaurants and the hotel.....Our first stop was for lunch at the hotel which was out on the patio by the pool and marina. Very nice scenery and good food.
I liked this hotel; I need things to be clean - and did not have any issues here at Bay Club. Room was cleaned nicely each day. It is not a large hotel but yet i found our room (259) to be very spacious. Plenty of room for suitcases or a child's bed. It's a smaller, older building but easy to get around and maintained well. Front desk was friendly and recommended great restaurants nearby. I was very comfortable at this hotel. Breakfast is included in the price, each day it is basically the same but they do change it up a little- things like ham/spinach/peppers etc in the eggs, waffles one day, pancakes the next, etc. Weekdays they offer waitress service for coffee; weekends it is self serve. Estella works mornings and she is friendly and attentive. Once i got back to work on Monday morning, i was missing those meals by the bay! We had to extend our stay and the hotel maintained the special wedding rate for us- just had to ask a few times to make sure they definitely gave us the discounted rate.
I did one load of laundry which went fine; you can buy single use laundry supplies right there.
The scenery outside on the bay is gorgeous. Loved going for breakfast each morning and then a walk along the bay. There are a few places within walking distance/ short drive for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Once you go off Shelter Island onto Rosecrans Street the area is a little more sketchy; not necessarily really bad, but this is a neighborhood in a city environment, so be cautious and use common sense. The hotel is a few miles from the airport and across the bay from a US Navy air station. Watch out for the noise from the fighter jets! Wow they are loud! I did not have any issues at night with sleeping, i found it to be a quiet community other than those jets and some navy helicopters. After seeing what people back in NJ were dealing with, i was happy to have a clean room, a hot shower and good food everyday! Plus a beautiful view helps too! I reccomend this hotel.

Room Tip: Rooms in the front look out on the parking lot but also the bay. There is construction going on at o...

We enjoyed our 3 day weekend stay at the Bay Club. We were looking for a reasonably priced place w a great view and comfortable room. It fit our expectations well and we enjoyed bringing our bikes and riding along the harbor! The view and sunsets were gorgeous.

The food prepared for dinner and the full breakfast buffet were not an up-side. The dinner host was stressed out bec we arrived to eat before 5 pm - we were content to sit and hang out til 5 pm to eat, we were not in a rush... Also the breakfast did not taste fresh, bread was stale, scrambled eggs were hard/crusty. But other than the food - we ate elsewhere other than the two meals we tried there - it was a wonderful time and location and facility. We enjoyed the pool and jacuzzi also.

Dear "Helen Q",

Thank you for taking the time to share about your recent stay at our hotel. While I am certainly glad that, overall, you found us "nice for the price", I am truly sorry about your experience with our restaurant. We regularly receive compliments from our guests about our Bay Club Bar & Grill and it is disheartening to hear that we fell short. Rest assured, your comments have been reviewed by our Director of Food and Beverage so that he may take appropriate action to ensure our regular high levels of service and food quality are best maintained.

We certainly hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back on your next visit to San Diego.

Warmly,
Aaron Willard

Older building that is well maintained. Friendly staff. Restaurant was good and moderately priced. Complimentary breakfast was very good. Excellent location. Poor internet service. Weak signal on both paid and free internet options.

Dear "Bob H",

Thank you for your candid feedback. It is wonderful to hear that you found our hotel in an "excellent location", "well maintained", with a "good staff" and that our complimentary buffet breakfast was "very good". Indeed, we pride ourselves on being completely guest-oriented and are proud to hear that it shows. We are sorry to hear, though, that you had challenges with the wireless internet. We are happy to help where we can or call our technician in to troubleshoot any issues should they arise. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back on your next visit to sunny San Diego!

Friendly staff, very accommodating -- from the check-in desk, the breakfast buffet team, and the bartender at the end of the day. Ask him about the desserts.
Location is good, too. Easy beach access to walk and relax.
I'd stay here again next time I'm in the area.

Room Tip: Try getting a room that faces north over the harbor.

We stayed at this hotel for four nights on the ground floor overlooking the marina in early October. Our experience echoes the many other very positive reviews. While the property is getting a little dated, it proved to be excellent value and the location cannot be beaten. It was quiet, with great views and so close to all of the main attractions and downtown. Breakfast was typical buffet and we would a have liked to see some yogourt occasionally (may be there but we never found it). We parked across the street which was very convenient. This avoided the hotel's very narrow spaces on the ground level or manoeuvring into the underground as well as saving the $5 daily charge. Excellent restaurants in the immediate area that we tried included Pomodor Ristorante (2833 Avenida De Portugal), Hunphreys dining room and Solare. We would definitely return when back in SD..

Check-in for our two day stay was handled by welcoming front desk staff, and we were assigned room #266, upstairs with a balcony with a very pleasing view over the yacht marina to the homes on the slope of Point Loma. The hotel interior as well as the furniture in our room were Bahamas style with ample use of bamboo and rattan. The carpeted, large room with a very comfortable king bed was super clean, the carpet spotless, and the furnishings had but a couple of nicks. A desk, two chairs, a 48 inch TV, a fridge, coffea/tea making equipment with supplies, and an ironing board rounded out room amenities. The bath with a large tiled vanity with sink and make-up mirror was equally clean and well lit, while the WC and tub/shower combo were in a separate room. Our room #266 was located above the kitchen with the exhaust motor sitting on the flat roof above the room, a loud hum was present and may be more than just white noise for some, yet we slept soundly in any case.

Ample parking at $5 per day is available above ground and in the underground garage. A small pool and jacuzzi area with loungers and umbrellas is available as is a gym. Airport shuttle service is free. Breakfast, included in the room rate, offers a typical buffet style selection.

All considered, the Bay Club Hotel proved to be a comfortable place with a scenic view, and managed by friendly accommodating staff. Given the rate charged, the hotel offers a good deal and we would be happy to stay there again in the future.
