My husband and I went for a quick San Diego get-away to use our zoo membership one last time before it expired. All we wanted was a place to crash near the gaslamp, which is exactly what we got. We went in with very low expectations and were meet with what we expected.
The hostel is still in remodel, giant-wholes-in-several-walls still under construction. The front desk is very simple and not at all fancy with the common room and kitchen right next to it. All the chairs were very stained and the kitchen area was barely in fair condition. The person who checked us in was friendly and helpful. She voluntarily took $10 off of our $55 private room charge because of the construction. When we got in our small room with a sink and tv the bed was not made and the bedding was wadded up in the middle of the bed. Having stayed at many hostels in Australia (but never in the states) I assumed they forgot to give us linens and we made the bed ourself. We asked for linens and the woman looked shocked that our bed wasn't made. She apologized and promised to have it ready when we returned from dinner.
Lucky D's offered a free dinner (sheperd's pie) in the kitchen area made by (supposedly) the manager. Honestly it didn't look appetizing. We specifically chose a cheap place to sleep so we could spend our money on the food and drink so we passed on the free meal went headed out 5th Street.
The bed was made when we returned and even though I had the creepy crawlies about the place as I tried to settle in, I ended up sleeping very well on a surprisingly comfortable mattress.
We took part in the all-you-can-make waffles for breakfast. They weren't fantastic but sufficient.
There weren't very many people staying there the night we were there but it was February. I could imagine the place a bit more bustling and fun in the high season. Hopefully they will have their construction done soon and make the place a bit more spiffy looking. The location was great and the cheapness worked for us but may not suit others.
