“Excellent choice”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 4, 2008

When we first arrived in San Diego (at the end of a loooong cross country road trip), I thought perhaps we had made a mistake and that we might have been better staying at a hotel closer to downtown or to one of the beaches. But I was wrong - this hotel was perfect. We had to wait a while for our room to be ready (5:30), but when we got to our 2-bedroom suite, we were very pleased with it - although slightly disappointed that the view was of the car park, rather than the water. The suite was very nicely furnished, spacious and comfortable. The A/C was a little loud and if you turned it off, you could hear other peoples' - but that was not a big deal to us. The staff were very friendly and helpful - the breakfast was good - and the location was excellent, being close to a myriad fast food restaurants, Trader Joe's etc. The seating area outside was beautiful. We stayed for 3 nights and were very sad to leave.

My wife, daughter and I stayed at the Homewood Suites for 4 nights in June of 08. We had a 2 bedroom/ 2 bath suite which was very nice so our daughter could have her own bathroom. The room was wonderful and had everything you could want. The staff was very nice and helpful, to the point where the person behind the desk wasn't sure exactly how to get us where we wanted to go so he called the establishment and and had them give him the directions. The breakfast was excellent and the staff in the breakfast room was very attentive. The area is very nice and a great place to take walks as my wife and I did at 6 each morning. Very good location to see the sights of San Diego if you have a car - 10 minutes to the zoo, 10 minutes to Sea World, and 10 minutes to SeaPort Village. We are looking forward to our next stay at this hotel.

My wife and I stayed at the Homewood Suites for two nights the last week of April. It was close to the airport and to Point Loma. We went to the zoo, Coronado Beach, Cabrillo National Monument & Sunset Cliffs. They were all a short drive from the hotel. The breakfast was a normal Homewood spread and was good. We did not try the supper. Having a Subway, Panera Bread and Starbucks in the same vicinity was nice for lunch and snacks.

My wife and I stayed here for three nights and we liked everything about this hotel. The staff was friendly and helpful. The rooms were great. Location is close to everything. The only problem I had is I wanted to stay longer.

I flew down with my mom to check out the hotel for future visits with our 2 young children. Staff were friendly and check in was smooth. Our room looked directly at the pool ground level and it was suprisingly quiet. I slept on the pull out couch and it was comfortable. There are 2 great playgrounds within walking distance for young children and the one over the bridge has a sandy beach. The only negative to this place is you must have a car. We took taxi's but it was expensive to go anywhere. And don't let the staff call you a cab because they called a private guy who cost more. We did walk to a local Trader Joe's, Starbucks and fabulous grocery store but it would be too far with young children. Breakfast buffet was great. I couldn't find a tip jar for staff during breakfast which I think should be mandatory and may explain why others have said they weren't friendly.

Overall I'd recommend this for young families with a car. I might try staying closer to town though as its a bit in the middle of nowhere.

The other reviews written on the hotel list just about everything that we liked here. It was a very nice property. We arrived early at 11:00am and they actually said that our room was ready and we could check in immediately instead of waiting until 3:00 pm.

The only two things that we didn't care for that much was our room location and the lack of space in the dining area.

Do not get a room by the exercise facilities if possible. People would be exercising at 4:00 am in the morning with the TV turned up really loud. They have a "open 24 hours a day" policy on their exercise rooms. That's just crazy!! Several times my husband had to go over into the exercise room after the person left and turn off the TV. The management finally put a sign up after we complained.

The other thing that was a little frustrating was the lack of space in the dining area at meal times. A free breakfast is offered every morning and a free dinner is offered Monday thru Thursday. We found that no matter what time we went down to eat it was crowded. We would have to find a table first and then take turns going to get our food. This was not so good with two small children as we had to make many trips through the crowd back and forth. That got really old after a couple of days.

Other than these two things, we really enjoyed our stay in the hotel. Everything was clean and our two bedroom suite was very nice. There was a nice, clean play area within walking distance behind the hotel along the bay. The kids had a lot of fun there.
There's also a great grocery store called Trader Joe's a short distance from the hotel. They had a good selection of snacks at a reasonable price.

My family absolutely LOVED this hotel. We have young children ages 1, 3, and 5. Upon arrival, we were greeted by friendly front desk staff and given a ground level room which we had requested. Our suite was spacious, even with a crib in the room. My husband loved the flat screen tv's. There are lots of restaurants close by, and Subway and Oggi's are both walking distance. There is a big navy ship cemented into the ground next to the hotel which was an amazing sight for the kids. Alsothere is a big grassy area to run around and play and a basketball court.
There are full kitchens and dining room tables. We borrowed a high chair from the hotel's main dining room which made meal times easy for our 1 year old. We stayed for a weekend so we didn't get the evening meal but there were great choices for breakfast including lots of hot and cold items, juice, etc. My daughter enjoyed making her own waffle in the do-it-yourself waffle iron. The only thing I would say about breakfast is that the breakfast "hostesses" were not very friendly. They were not outwardly rude but they did not speak or smile the whole time we were there. They just stood next to the food with stony faces and replenished items when necesary. My husband joked that they should be called the "breakfast wardens" instead.
We stayed here for an event at the san diego sports arena which was just a 10 minute drive away and downtown san diego was just a short drive away also. Overall I would say that this is a great hotel for families with young children and the breakfast is a great perk that will save you lots of travel time and money and will not dissapoint. *One important tip, request a room away from the elevator or you will end up asking to switch rooms. The elevator noise is VERY LOUD in the rooms right next to it on either side*

  • Liked — breakfast was delicious and free
  • Disliked — had to change rooms because of elevator noise
