“Noisy and loud ... disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 25, 2013

Unfortunately we didn't get a good night's sleep at all here. Our room was noisy and got no light, which ruined the experience for us, despite a few nice touches from the hotel.

The bad: The noise. We could hear the noise from the street (not too loud at night) and got woken up in the morning by stomping overhead. Worst of all, our room shared an interior door with the room next door and we could hear everything. Our neighbors played an audio book all night long the first night, and we could hear the whole thing. When we mentioned it to the staff the next morning, they told us our neighbors were checking out that day. The next night? Same exact audio book, just as loud. We had requested a quiet room when we booked, so we were super-disappointed that our room was so noisy. And when we brought it up, the staff misled us and didn't address the problem at all.

Our first floor room also looked directly at the next-door building, meaning our room had no natural light and no air. It made it unpleasant to spend any time there.

Just OK: The shared bathrooms were fine. They were clean as everyone says, though we didn't have a sink in our room as others have mentioned. Other places I've stayed with shared bathrooms have had multiple bathrooms for multiple rooms. Vyvant just had one bathroom that we shared with another room, which was fine, but if the other people were showering, we couldn't brush our teeth or anything, which was an inconvenience (the front desk let us into another bathroom in this case). Weirdly, the shared bathroom has no towel racks or anything, which meant there was nowhere to put your clothes or hang your towel while showering.

The good: The staff was very nice and helpful (except for the incident with the noise). It's obvious a lot of care has been put into the place and the rooms are nicely decorated. Breakfast was minimal, but good quality stuff (good granola, croissants). It's a nice location, close to the Little Italy restaurants and about a 25-minute walk from downtown.

The bottom line: I wanted to like this place more, but a good night's sleep is one of the most important things for me, and we didn't get that here. And the staff's indifference (resulting in a second night of bad sleep) really ruined it.

Room Tip: Room G is a noisy cave. Stay away!

* Staff was super courteous.
* Property was tastefully decorated and clean.
* Breakfast was simple, but certainly better than the standard continental breakfast at chain hotels.
* Many guests were international tourists which made for great conversations!
* The bed was incredibly comfortable - so much so that I'm going to inquire as to what type it was! I forgot to check and want the same one in my home!Parking was somewhat challenging.
* Finding free street parking was a slight challenge, but not impossible.
* The shared bathroom arrangement didn't suit us, but rooms with private bathrooms are plentiful, just more expensive.

Room Tip: I always recommended ear plugs to any traveler no matter where I stay. Hotel Vyvant has beautiful wo...

Stayed here due to the great reviews on TripAdvisor. It lived up to the reviews for the most part - the place was cute, service was good, and room was incredibly clean. We came here for a birthday trip, and they left a bottle of wine in our room, which was a nice touch. There was also coffee and a great selection of teas available at breakfast (along with pastries) and wine and local craft beer at happy hour. The hotel is walkable to Little Italy sights, though a little further from Gaslamp/East Village. We stayed in a spa king room, and the hot tub was clean and functional, and the water pressure and heat from the shower was perfect (though it was a little odd that the shower was in the hot tub - usually you would have a separate shower.)

There were a couple things that weren't great. One was that the air conditioner in the room was VERY loud and confusing to use. It kept loudly cycling on and off all night and kept waking us up. Also, it came with a remote that had a million different modes and buttons, and it was hard to figure out which one to use. Another thing is that the bathroom had no fan, so the humidity from the hot tub would seep into the whole room and make it stuffy. Also, the walls are very thin - we could hear the people in the room(s) next to us, one of whose alarm was going off at 5 or 6 AM (and woke us up the days we were there). There was also some wear and tear in the bathroom (moldy grout around the hot tub, loose tiles, rust on the door hinges).

Overall, the place was charming and we had a good time, but we might try a different place next time we are in SD.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. We value our guest's feedback and work to make improvements. We want to apologize for the noisy air conditioner. We will have someone take a look at that. We will also start putting the guide to use the A/C remote in the rooms to help navigate the controls. We will also take a look at the grout in the tub. Again, we do apologize for the unpleasant parts of your stay. We hope you will let us make it up to you in the future!

Best Wishes,

Bekah

Stayed here with my sister during our roadtrip for 2 nights. Our room was beautiful as well as the bathroom. Both the room and the bathroom were very clean. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was included in the price and the croissants were excellent. We would definitely stay in this hotel again.

I urge you, please, book your stay here. Yes, you *may* hear city noise from the street, but the ever-thoughtful managers of this charming, boutique hotel now provide earplugs for the light sleepers among us! That measure taken, I remind you, stay here, please.

I shall go on at a bit of length in what follows. First, I shall offer my observations about the hotel, location, etc. Second, I shall report on a few marvelous and generous deeds the staff did for us during our stay; in this case, I hope also to be thanking them once more.

The hotel retains the details of the period of its origin without having to appeal to dilapidated charm thanks to recent renovations. Our room was spacious and well appointed with good lighting (natural and artificial), good water pressure in the shower, and a nice full length mirror. The decor is simple and tasteful. The breakfast is a basic but satisfying continental breakfast exactly as advertised by the hotel (except that they can't possibly convince you of the quality of the coffee - at least for my taste for the strong but not acidic). The location cannot be better. Its proximity to the airport means an inexpensive cab ride or a short, easy, and direct commute in a renter (and this is important to me since driving in an unfamiliar city isn't always a fun way to start a trip). Little Italy is the immediate surrounding and balboa park, the marina, downtown/gaslamp district are all within walking distance (assuming by that you mean a 20 minute walk) and thus a very short ride (as well as a short ride to hillcrest). With its proximity to 'the 5' (highway) it's also a easy trip to Coronado, sea world, and la jolla. It's really just an incredibly central location. Finally, as to the foods and such; the hotel is walking distance to some very hip and excellent restaurant and bars (e.g. Cucina Urbana in bankers hill, el camino mexican at the end of India st, the waterfront bar, and perhaps the chilliest place to buy and/or drink the local product sold by knowledgable and friendly folks, Craft and Bottle (think: expansive beer selection from around the world meets industrial chic bar without any pretentiousness)).

Ok, onto part two. The managers both day and evening are hospitable in the truest and broadest sense - kind, friendly, and charitable. Two exceptional examples beyond the very pleasant chats we had with them. If you bring a rental car, you will have to park in the street. This isn't a problem at all as nearby (within one block) parking is always possible (probable) (and you should embrace the city living anyhow). As of our first day, however, one of the managers mentioned she' be vacating her parking spot within the next 10 minutes and suggested that I simply wait and take her spot. This worked seamlessly and was unnecessarily kind.

The hotel is excellent; the staff perfect it.

This is my first time staying at a boutique hotel and it was a great choice for celebrating my 60th birthday with my family! It is so close to everything in Little Italy so we walked to dinner at Felippi's, dessert at Yogurtland, and enjoyed a casual walk back to the hotel to end the evening. We were even able to have our own little pre-dinner reception in one of the enclosed patios at the hotel. Although there is no hotel parking lot, none of us had a problem finding parking on the street right outside the hotel. I am a super light sleeper, wake up at any noise, and I managed to have a great night of sleep....closed the windows, turned on the ceiling fan and I was out for the night! Comfortable beds, my sister-in-law raved about the jacuzzi tub in her room, great breakfast (hard to choose between the granola and yogurt, flaky croissants, or blueberry scones as my favorite so I ate all three!) fun conversations in the lobby with people from all over as we ate or just "hung out". I am excited that I get to stay again for a work retreat in just a few weeks!
