“Centrally Located and Great Rooftop Bar”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2014

This is one of the best hotels I've stayed at for a number of reasons:

1) Centrally located in Gaslamp, walking distance to the San Diego Convention Center and overlooks Petco Park (if you're lucky, you don't even need to buy a baseball game ticket; just book the right room with a view!)
2) The rooftop bar is amazing! Non-hotel guests come here on a regular. The drinks are good and there are fire pits and plenty of seating available. You can't beat the view (of Petco Park!), and a lot of good-looking people come here to drink.
3) Nice amenities, comfortable beds...it's a Marriott!

The only downside is parking is $24, but it is garaged. And the Wi-Fi is not free.

Room Tip: Choose a room with a view of Petco Park if you want a free view of the game.

Hello buffy0182,

We're glad you had a comfortable and pleasant stay with us. Thank you for your review of our hotel, and also our rooftop bar Altitude! As you mentioned, it is a popular bar/lounge in the Gaslamp Quarter not only for our guests staying with us but with locals as well. We hope the next you're back in San Diego we are able to welcome you back as a guest or visiting Altitude.

All the best,
Dante M

The roof top bar didn't accept completely valid European IDs. We are both 40 years - and were surprised about the hostile and unfriendly reception. Below Marriott standards. We are Marriott elite members and offered them to check with the reception. This was refused. The manager on duty July 28 was not willing to share his name.

Dear TSCPH,

My sincere apologies for the reception that you received while attempting to visit our lounge, Altitude. Our policy is to check identification for anyone who appears under the age of 35 and unfortunately we do not accept any foreign ID cards or driver license's as we are not familiar with those ID's but do accept all passports. Nonetheless you should have been treated with respect and kindness no matter the situation. I will address this immediately with my bar and security staff to insure this does not happen in the future and once again my sincere apologies and thank you for taking the time to give us your honest and appreciated feedback.

Great hotel, great location and great service. This propoerty should be considered a benchmark when it comes to an enjoyable stay. The only negative thing a can say is the valet parking is expensive. It's $40.00 a night for guests and in my opinion it should be cheaper. Recommendation is to park your car at the parking garage across the street for cheaper.

Room Tip: Rooms on the west side allow to have a view of San Diego Padres PETCO Park. If that doesn't wor...

Green Features: Appreciate the hotel conserving the water. It's a valuable resource, especially in Southern California where a drought is taking place.

Thank you so much for your great review! We are very lucky to have such a conveniently located hotel, close by everything in the downtown San Diego area. In regards to parking, we do our best to stay in line with the cost of parking of surrounding hotels. We are happy that you enjoyed your stay and hope to have you back again soon!

I've stayed at this hotel 3 times now for work and they've all been great experiences. The 1st week had a few home Padres games to watch from my hotel room or the 22nd floor rooftop bar (must see). It's in a great location to run along the water as well as enjoy the night life (Gaslamp, duh). In-room dining was surprisingly delicious as well. Note to families: no pool/hot tub.

Overall, I'd definitely recommend this hotel to basically anybody of legal drinking age, as they'll benefit the most from this hotel's location ;)

Room Tip: some rooms have a great ballpark view, others have a great Marina/city view - ya really can't lo...

Except for that parking at the Marriott Gaslamp is $40, and there is dirt cheap parking almost across the street, this is a very nice hotel. Location is great, immediately across the street from Petco Park and one block away from 5th street. Lots of good places to eat nearby. Rooms are basic – nothing fancy at all.

So much more character than the Marriott Marquis nearby. Here, the wireless works great. There, the wireless does not work in some rooms, and they cannot get you the help they need to get it fixed.

Room Tip: If you are a baseball fan, try to get a room on the side of Petco Park.

Soooo disappointed with my experience at the Marriott Gas Lamp in Downtown San Diego. At check in I was called 3 different names, my room was not available. When I got a room, the thermostat was broken and I had to pay $10 per night for Wifi. Location is fantastic but there are plenty of hotels in the area and I will be staying at the Hilton next time. I want to say one more time....very disappointed the way I was treated.

We stayed at this hotel over the 4th of July hotel. It was conveniently located near many restaurants in the Gaslamp Quarter. We were able to walk over to Seaport Village and the Convention Center. It is also very close to Petco Stadium. And the hotel is very close to the metro, which you can take into Old Town or even down to Seaport Village if you don't want to walk. The hotel was wonderful and very quiet, especially for where it was located. There was no pool, but we did not have a need for it during our stay. The front desk was especially helpful in providing us with details on the metro and good places to watch fireworks.

The only reason we may not stay here again is simply because we found the Gaslamp Quarter to be less appropriate for a family with a young child. There are a lot of people going barhopping, and it becomes a less family-friendly environment.

Dear PackersGirl,

Thank you so much for your wonderful review! We are so happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us. Yes, we are very close to almost everything you could want to experience in downtown San Diego! From Petco Park to the Gaslamp Quarter to Seaport village, there is so much to do nearby! We are glad that you found our staff to be so accommodating during your stay. That is what we strive for. Yes, the Gaslamp Quarter can get a little crazy sometimes, depending on what time of the year you are visiting, but overall it can be very family friendly depending on what events are taking place downtown. We look forward to having you and your family back for a visit with us soon!

Best regards,
Katia
