“Last Minute Perfect Stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 16, 2013

Perfect location to experience all of Gas Lamp and easy access to Coronado Island. Great staff, roof top bar has a spectacular water view and a view straight into PetCo Park. Rooms were spacious and clean-ours also came with a water view.

We were a family of 4 who stayed at the Marriott for the San Diego Marathon. The location could not be beat. We were close to the Gaslamp District where we walked every night for dinner and Petco Park was like 50 steps away.

Otherwise this is a pretty normal Marriott-nothing really special. The bar downstairs was nice for happy hour, but by early evening it cleared out for the bar upstairs I would assume. We only made it upstairs to bar once since we had young kids, but the views were great from there.

The check in counter was fast and everyone was very nice. I would say though they or the people out front did not seem to have many recommendations or thoughts about what to do or where to go so we were on our own for that.

We stayed in a normal room with 2 beds and it was fairly crowded for 2 adults and 2 young children. The beds were pretty cramped. Luckily we weren't in our rooms very much. Because of the cost of parking we ended up not getting a car and taking cabs everywhere (which were easy to get).

The bonus of the hotel was it was right in the middle of everything for the marathon. You could walk to the convention center for packet pick up and the finish for the marathon was at Petco Park. The hotel had a shuttle to the start line for a small fee which was a nice touch.

The summarize this is a pretty basic Marriott that happens to be in a great location in the heart of a lot of things to do in San Diego.

Dear Cseanmc,

Thank you for staying at the San Diego Marriott Gaslamp Quarter for the San Diego Marathon. We are pleased to read you enjoyed our central location, conveniently located right next door to Petco Park and in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter. We are pleased to read you also enjoyed Happy Hour in Latitude Lounge and the views from our rooftop bar Altitude! I’m sorry to read the front desk associates were not able to provide you with their own thoughts and recommendations. I will follow up with my team to make sure they are better prepared to offer recommendations in the future. We do take a lot of pride in providing our guests with the very best products and guest service; we do hope you’ll stay with us again in the future.

Best regards,

We stayed at the Marriott in the Gaslamp Quarter, San Diego for five nights in June 2013. We chose is partially because we could use my Marriott points but expected the "cookie-cutter" Marriott experience; we were very pleasantly surprised! Our room had clearly only recently been refurbished and was very stylishly decorated (not the usual depressing shades of beige and brown which is standard Marriott fare). The room was spotlessly clean, the bed was exceptionally comfortable and the bathroom was newly fitted. The hotel dining room opened out onto a quiet street, so we could eat our breakfast outside while watching Wimbledon on the big screen TV. Very friendly service from everyone we came into contact with.

There is no hotel pool, but it's in a city centre location with no outside space. This is a Marriott that feels a bit like a "boutique" hotel. Highly recommended if you want convenient access to the Gaslamp quarter.

The only downside is the expensive valet parking (there is no self parking option). But parking in this part of San Diego is difficult and expensive. There is an excellent bike shop just around the corner which does rentals - this is the best way to get around San Diego and Coronado - save the car for longer trips to the beaches and the zoo.

Room Tip: A higher floor may give you a better view - but you're not staying there for the views.

The room was terrific. The view of Petco Park, Coronado Bridge and the Bay made a perfect setting. The large window could have used a wash. The staff was very accommodating. The room and bed was comfy. We will do it again.

Hotel was nice, clean and looked updated. Maid service came to our room at 4pm when we were trying to get ready to out for the evening. Club lounge was under staffed and ran out of everything by 8:30am and did not attempted to replenish anything. Hotel seemed to be understaffed for a holiday weekend. I stay at Marriott's all the time and this was not up to the Marriott quality and standards I see when I travel

Dear JWFan515,

Thank you for staying at the San Diego Marriott Gaslamp Quarter. I’m pleased to read you enjoyed the hotel and the special attention to detail we put into to keeping it clean and fresh for our guests. I’m sorry to read the Concierge Lounge ran out of items during your visit. I will be following up with our lounge and kitchen associates to make sure that does not happen again. Thank you for your feedback and providing us the opportunity to improve upon our services and staffing for future holiday weekends. We do take a lot of pride in the product and services we offer and I apologize that we were not better prepared during your visit. We do hope you’ll give us a second chance and stay with us next time your travels bring you to San Diego.

The Marriott at the Gaslamp had a great location next to Petco park and was located on the outskirts of the Gaslamp. Everything is within walking distance so no car required. That's the biggest plus. The lobby was modernized and did not match the style of the rooms. We stayed for 4th of July and requested a room on the highest floor possible to view the fireworks. Paid $225 a night and still could only give us 15 out of 21 occupiable floors. We wanted to see the fireworks without having to stand atop the overcrowded rooftop bar. This was a bummer since we looked out the window and could only see caked on dirt from months of rain and weather. For 4th of July it should be a necessity to get your windows cleaned. Our view of the fireworks was also blocked by the Omni hotel. This ruined our romantic weekend of fireworks but we had a comfortable time nonetheless. The rooms were comfortable. Amazing beds. Small TV. No refrigerator. $38/a night parking.

Would we ever come back?
No. There are better options in the area for the price.

Dear Lany H,

Thank you for your review and comments. I sincerely apologize for the condition of our windows. Unfortunately the rainy season lasted longer than we anticipated, and each time we attempted a cleaning the weather did not cooperate. We are now waiting on the availability of our window cleaning service and equipment. I assure you, we want to provide the best views from our rooms, as most of them offer spectacular sights.

I hope you will try us again. I'm sure your view will be improved.

All my best,
