“Best ballpark hotel in country”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 19, 2013

The views from Altitude, their rooftop bar, down into Petco Park will make baseball fans out of sworn nonbelievers. Not to mention the same bar views cover SD-Coronado bridge, the naval station, SD Bay, even parts of Mexico. The staff, particular Carlos the front desk supervisor, genuinely care. The hotel can get kind of overrun with clubbers in the evening, but its got such a cool old world hotel vibe and for the most part the staff appreciate the clubbers are too much for regular guests and try to make everyone happy. The building is older, so the piping and toilets, etc., are loud and constantly in the walls. Normally this would mean I'd score them a 3, but the vibe is so good, the staff helpful, the location insanely cool, and the rooms clean, that it needs a 5. Thanks Carlos!

Room Tip: no pool. parking is pricey ($38 per night). But so many restaurants close by in the Gaslamp. and t...

The Marriott is located in the heart of San Diego and it is the perfect location to get your day started for sight seeing or your night with clubbing and night life. Everything is just a couple blocks away. The rooms are very nice and it feels really homey - the TV sits a little bit to low but this is not really an issue in Americas finest city. They have an issue with their plumbing - the next room shower was sooo loud and it felt like something was coming up my bathroom sink...weird. But overall it is a nice place and hotel to stay...
One last thing: parking is ridiculous expensive - $38!!! And internet is still not free - so please add this to your room price because parking in downtown SD is almost impossible.

Room Tip: I am not sure, but from what I saw, all rooms are equal great.

Dear Ingo S,

Thank you for the terrific review. I'm happy to read that you found our location to be ideal for your sightseeing and enjoyment of our amazing city. Regarding our parking rates; we are very sensitive to "extra" charges in our hotel. We do our very best to be priced in-line or lower with the hotels that surround us. In addition, we offer packages that include parking. If you are a AAA member, and book a AAA rate, your valet parking is complimentary.

I hope we have an opportunity to welcome you back to our hotel, and hopefully you can take advantage of one of our value added packages.

Warmest regards,

Jeffrey Burg

We stayed at the Gaslamp Quarter Marriot for four nights and had a wonderful experience. We were there to meet two other couples, and we all liked the hotel and the location. The hotel is with-in walking distance of the major attractions in the Gaslamp quarter. The hotel staff was very friendly and wanted to make sure our stay was a good one. Our room was clean, well maintained, and laid out nicely. The hotel rooftop lounge was wonderful with amazing views of the city and the ballpark. I actually watched a few innings of the Padres game from the rooftop bar, and it was a great seat. The rooftop bar also seems to be a major attraction for non-guests on Friday and Saturday nights, as a DJ takes over and really gets the place hopping. Around 11PM on Saturday there was a very long line in the lobby of people waiting to get their turn on the rooftop bar that seats around 200. It was a great experience and the staff was great to us during our four nights/five days. I would recommend it to anyone visiting the area and will stay again.

The negatives - Every place has some areas for improvement, and these were the annoying ones for my wife and I.

-If you order and pay for wireless, it is only for one device. If you want a second device connected, you have to pay for that second device. I would think at the level this hotel is, that wireless access would be part of the service provided with your room, not a separate charge for each device you have. People travel with multiple devices, and it is silly that each device requires a separate charge.

-The TV and Remote are slow and maddening to use. Although we were not in San Diego to watch TV, we did want to use it when relaxing at the end of the day or getting ready in the morning. The systems they use to run their TV was slow and at times non-responsive. You would be clicking on buttons to change the channel and nothing would happen for 10 seconds or more. Also, the placement of the TV is too low for the remote to work for someone sitting up in bed. You have to keep leaning forward holding the remote high in the air at an odd angle to get the remote to work. Again, we were not there to watch TV, but it was the common frustration with the two other couples that were staying at the hotel with us.

-The rooms were quiet except for Friday and Saturday night when the DJ was playing on the rooftop bar. The bar is on floor 22 and our rooms were on floor 15, but we could hear the thumping and the music coming down from the rooftop bar. I hoping it would get quieter, but it actually got louder as the night went on, getting to its loudest point just before it shut down for the night.

Pros

In the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter and literally steps away from the Padres ballpark
Rooms have been updated and have excellent bath amenities
Staff is friendly
With the AAA rate valet parking is included

Cons

Can be pricey at times - $300+ for a standard room
Be prepared to hear numerous toilets other than your own flushing throughout your stay - I have stayed in numerous rooms and can always count on the sound of a flushing toilet from above, or next door

Overall, if you are a Marriott frequent guest you'll like this place. If you are looking just for the nightlife then there are plenty of additional options in the area that may be cheaper.

I had a meeting at the Marriott Gaslamp. They did an amazing job. Great meeting space with natural day light and access to terrace.. (two thumbs up). Meeting room floor doesn't have any sleeping rooms (again two thumbs up), rooms are clean and well maintained, easy access to airport, train, tram, restaurants, nightlife, and convention center.
And the people I work with... ahmazing.. great service.. LOVE my convention sales contact. she went above and beyond...
Great location.. price is good.. don't miss out the opportunity to stay a very nice hotel while you are in San Diego

Room Tip: ask for higher floor with great views

We stayed at this hotel for our visit of San Diego and we could not have picked a better place. Right where everything happens in San Diego, it has a fully renovated product - the room was impeccable for a Residence Inn and it had nice amenities.
Quite and very comfortable however the rooms do not have a in-room safe, you need to leave your valuables with the front desk (so weird considering it has a new product).
Front desk team was very sweet and professional - exactly what you expect from Marriott employees - great!
Valet parking is a little steep, USD 35 per night, however all places around are the same price, so do not worry about looking for it.
Great place to stay in this awesome city!
