We stayed at the Gaslamp Quarter Marriot for four nights and had a wonderful experience. We were there to meet two other couples, and we all liked the hotel and the location. The hotel is with-in walking distance of the major attractions in the Gaslamp quarter. The hotel staff was very friendly and wanted to make sure our stay was a good one. Our room was clean, well maintained, and laid out nicely. The hotel rooftop lounge was wonderful with amazing views of the city and the ballpark. I actually watched a few innings of the Padres game from the rooftop bar, and it was a great seat. The rooftop bar also seems to be a major attraction for non-guests on Friday and Saturday nights, as a DJ takes over and really gets the place hopping. Around 11PM on Saturday there was a very long line in the lobby of people waiting to get their turn on the rooftop bar that seats around 200. It was a great experience and the staff was great to us during our four nights/five days. I would recommend it to anyone visiting the area and will stay again.
The negatives - Every place has some areas for improvement, and these were the annoying ones for my wife and I.
-If you order and pay for wireless, it is only for one device. If you want a second device connected, you have to pay for that second device. I would think at the level this hotel is, that wireless access would be part of the service provided with your room, not a separate charge for each device you have. People travel with multiple devices, and it is silly that each device requires a separate charge.
-The TV and Remote are slow and maddening to use. Although we were not in San Diego to watch TV, we did want to use it when relaxing at the end of the day or getting ready in the morning. The systems they use to run their TV was slow and at times non-responsive. You would be clicking on buttons to change the channel and nothing would happen for 10 seconds or more. Also, the placement of the TV is too low for the remote to work for someone sitting up in bed. You have to keep leaning forward holding the remote high in the air at an odd angle to get the remote to work. Again, we were not there to watch TV, but it was the common frustration with the two other couples that were staying at the hotel with us.
-The rooms were quiet except for Friday and Saturday night when the DJ was playing on the rooftop bar. The bar is on floor 22 and our rooms were on floor 15, but we could hear the thumping and the music coming down from the rooftop bar. I hoping it would get quieter, but it actually got louder as the night went on, getting to its loudest point just before it shut down for the night.
