“Great food and excellent service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 20, 2014

Vegetarian options are sometimes limited at Vietnamese restaurants but Bolsa has a great selection. The place is unassuming and looks to be family run. The service is quick and pleasant, and the prices are reasonable. Recommended!

“Cold weather, Hot soup - Bun Bo Hue”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 30, 2012

Bolsa Restaurant is family-run and there is a casual and friendly feel to the place. Service is very good.
We usually order Bo Luc Lac (shaking cubed beef), Cha Ca Thang Long (fish fillets with dill on hot plate- very good).

The weather was a little nippy so we ordered Bun Bo Hue as recommended by the friendly owner. Her sister made the soup. Knowing that the family is from city of Hue, we have to try out the Bun Bo Hue.
The soup came accompanied with a plate of mixed greens (perilla, lettuce), bean sprouts and thinly shaved banana flower and a jar of home made chili paste.

Beautiful color... I bent down to inhale the steam rising from the soup... lots of lemon grass, a hint of shrimp paste... so far so good.
One sip testing for flavor: the broth tastes almost like there was pineapple cooked in it, a clean but not sugar-sweet taste. Not salty. The taste of shrimp paste is not overpowering. It's not spicy, so you will need to add some chili paste.
The beef slices were delicious, each bite is flavorful. This meat has been cooked along with the broth to the right degree of tenderness. The Gio heo was cooked just right and not chewy like in some other Bun Bo Hue. In short, the soup was excellent.

The air was cool, and this delicious bowl of soup kept me warm and happy.
This was the best Bun Bo Hue I've had so far in San Diego.

“Excellent small family-owned restaurant”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 27, 2011

This is a modest family-owned and run restaurant with excellent food. I have been coming there for years with family when I am in town for a visit, and though I am only there about three times a year they greet me warmly. Most of the dishes have meat, but there are a number of vegetarian choices as well. The vegetarian spring rolls (non-cooked) with tofu are one of my favorites. They make a vegetarian pho (soup with noodles and veggies) on request as well as the more traditional meat/chicken version. All the vegetables are very fresh, and the additional garnishes of bean sprouts and basil and other items are always attractively presented. This is a gem, worth going out of the way for. And the prices are very modest. With shared appetizers, a main dish, and tea and water for beverages we seldom spend over $10 a person before tax and tip.
