“Solamar Kimpton Hotel Shines in San Diego”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2013

Hubby, dog and I just stayed there for 3 nites. It is a lovely hotel in the Gaslamp District and an easy walk to the Convention Center and most of the places you wld want to visit in the GLD. But - the real eye opener was the outstanding staff. They knocked themselves out anytime they had an opportunity to interact with us. Everyone was warm, friendly and tried to go the extra mile if there was anything at all we needed. And, of course the bonus was that our little dog was treated as the princess she obviously is - right from her name on the welcome board to the offer of treats, a poofy hotel dog bed and a color co-ordinated bowl. While I hate to give a shout-out only to these people - it's simply because I can't remember everyone else's names. There so many kind people. So - a BIG thanks to Randall the superb bartender and Jennifer in housekeeping and of course valets/concierges Mike, Kyle and Trevor. You all made our stay in San Diego wonderful. We are now very loyal Kimpton folks. Go there and take your dog to this exceptional and dog-friendly hotel with the great staff Thank you all very much!!!!

Room Tip: The Master Suite, which has a jacuzzi, is roomier than the Virtuoso - also a bit higher priced - [ma...

Love the Kimpton Boutique Hotel group!! Hotel Solarmar in San Diego was just perfect. Warmly greeting by Mike with a huge smile with Valet Parking.

Trevor and Lauren greeted us with a huge smile and hotel hospitality like one would expect. Decor amazing!

The pool bar lovely as it is was not impressive with wait staff.

I supposed i had high expectations. Well reviewed and room was ok but staff really need a lift. Its run like by high school students on work experience. The door staff look like its a chore, trying to get concierge you are always on hold, and its just seems overall understaffed. as well currently renovations going on. Wont be back.

Hello Plasticcd,

Thanks very much for your feedback, we really appreciate the comments. Sorry we let you down on the service front. That's where we usually excel, so it's disappointing we didn't make it happen for you. We're not doing any current renovations, perhaps that was some routine repair work or servicing of the building you encountered. Thanks again for the candid feedback, we'll take it and learn from it. Have a great autumn,

We stayed here for 2 nights at the end of our California coast road trip.
And what a city and what a hotel to finish with! we both fell in Love with San Diego as a city it really is great and the hotel could not be more perfect!
Location is great just opposite to Downtown on 5th Ave. close enough without it being to loud and busy, the rooms are also lovely clean and modern, nice big comfortable bed big TV nicely stocked mini bar.
The roof top pool (4th Floor) is nice with a bar and waitress service! Bit of a sun trap up there!
the staff were friendly and helpful the hotel offered us free Continental breakfast on both mornings in the hotel restaurant, a free taxi service from the concierge (tip based fair) which we took advantage of the visit the Zoo, It was a lovely car and the guy that drive us was really nice.
also the hotel offers complementary sangria and beer between 5pm and 6pm in the hotel lobby which is also a really nice touch! (all these little added extras make hotels really special!)

We honestly cannot recommend this hotel enough and will defiantly be returning this hotel when we visit San Diego again and we cannot wait!!

Just back from a four evening stay at Hotel Solamar in the Gaslamp Quarter. First off, the Hotel is absolutely beautiful. The happy hour with complimentary sangria and beer each night was a fun opportunity to meet other guests. The rooftop pool was gorgeous. But most of all we enjoyed the special touches - you can send a jpg of loved ones ahead of your stay and have a photo of them up in your room when you arrive. It was our ten year anniversary and we received, unasked, a nice bottle of wine and a sweet note. One of the concierges, Dahlia, advised us on restaurants, and she was spot-on with every one. Hands down some of the best meals we've ever enjoyed, and I'm a foodie (Oceanaire, and Searsucker were the two best)... Dahlia and the rest of the staff couldn't have been more helpful. Each time she made the reservation for our dinner we would find that the restaurant was aware of our anniversary and treated us to champagne, desserts, etc! That definitely wouldn't have happened if we had arranged things on our own. We have been fortunate to have stayed in some wonderful hotels over the years (the Greenbrier, etc), but this rates as our best hotel experience ever! Thanks so much to Dahlia and the rest of the staff!

Love Kimpton hotels. I just love the boutique hotel thing. And the complimentary happy hour. And that they allow dogs. Anyways, went for a friend's bachelorette and it was the perfect place. Great pool with room for lounging (and yes, we had a cabana - which made it even better). Much bigger pool area than the W around the corner. Great location for going out. Right in the Gaslamp district. Splurged for the deluxe room, so we had plenty of room for 4 girls. Nice and clean and modern and chic. Will definitely stay here again!

Room Tip: Ask for a view of the stadium

Perfect hotel for experiencing the Gaslight District of San Diego. Incredible staff, comfortable rooms, wonderful evening happy hour! Easy to walk to number of restaurants and bars. We stayed on the fourth floor. Our room was right above the outdoor bar area which at first I thought would be too loud but we did not have any problems with noise. We would definitely stay here again.
