“Unique hotel experience at Kimpton hotels”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 31, 2012

We stayed at the Solamar (San Diego) and the Palomar (LA) a few days ago and can't speak highly enough of the unique hotel experience the Kimpton hotels offer to the traveller who is sick of big, impersonal hotel chain accommodation. Just wish they had hotels in Australia! Love the warm, welcoming front staff at both hotels... they couldn't do enough for us. love the animal friendly policy... although we had no pets we loved having them around. Also loved the 5-6 PM drinks in the foyer... met such friendly fellow travellers.

WOW. We visited for Memorial Day weekend and were blown away by the friendliness of the entire staff, from the concierge to the valet! This hotel is at the heart of the vibrant Gaslamp district with the Petco Park and wonderful restaurants & bars in walking distance. You just can't beat the convenience of the location. There's a very nice pool with gorgeous looking people on the 4th floor. There's even complimentary wine service from 5PM to 6PM at the lobby as well as tea and coffee in the morning... Best of all, it's pet-friendly (but they have pet-free floors for non-pet parents)!

The only thing to watch out for is that they have a lot of connecting rooms with shared doors so if you are sensitive to noises, ask for a non-connected room.

The great thing about their valet is that the parking lot is within the premise (it's actually an indoor garage located on bottom floors of the hotel building) so when you want your car, you don't have to wait 30 minutes for the valet to retrieve it. There are several cheaper overnight parking lots around the area within walking distance if you don't want to pay the $40 for valet.

Love it...book it!

My husband and I LOVED Hotel Soamar. The boutique hotel is warm and friendly! When we arrived in our room we found a bottle of wine (it was my birthday weekend) and a picture of our puppy on the bulletin board (such a cute touch). The employees were friendly and helped us with many dining options including Neighbor - what a great local hangout!!! The nightly wine reception was a great touch too. Our absolute favorite hangout was the bar on the rooftop hotel. Great views, great service, and a fun way to relax at night before we called it a day. Book a room here, you won't regret it!!!

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the upper floors - it's quiet!

My wife and I have stayed here several times. The Solamar is on outskirt of the San Diego Gaslamp District and 1 block from Petco Stadium. From when you drive up and you are welcomed by the bellman, to the very friendly and helpful front desk staff. Happy Hour with some free red and white wine from 5pm to 6pm is a great time to meet other guest or friends. The pool is small, however the pool deck bar area is huge. It's quite the scene on the weekend, not for kids - adult pool thank god. Rooms are very comfotable and spacious, the bathroom however is for one person at a time. Would I stay here again? Absolutely YES! BTW, Dog friendly, size doesn't seem to matter.

Room Tip: Pool view looking towards Petco Park.

We stayed at the Hotel Solamar while attending a wedding in San Diego. All of the employees went out of their way to be friendly and accomodating. The management of this hotel really cares about creating a very welcoming atmosphere. Our room on the ninth floor was quiet, clean, and comfortable, and we had a view of the Petco baseball park. The location of the hotel is excellent. The gaslamp district is within a short walk, and features many excellent restaurants and bars. Valet parking is expensive, but the attendants did a great job parking and retrieving our car. We would definitely stay at this hotel on future visits to San Diego.

Firstly, you must be aware this is a dog friendly hotel, that prides them self on this. I love dogs so I didnt have an issue with them.

We stayed here in March 2011, we got the hotel through the unpublished rates on Expedia and we loved it. The room was nice. The location was perfect. We wanted to stay in the Gas Lamp district and this was a great location.

There's a great breakfast called the broken yolk across the street.

The only 3 issues I had was:
- Parking was expensive, you can however park in a controlled lot across the street.
- The bathroom had very little counter space.
- The weekend we were there was mardi gras, which was really loud, busy (apparently there was over 210,000 people that showed up) and they closed off the street for it and you had to have tickets purchased in advance, we didn't do our research, this was our fault. Do your research. But otherwise I would've want to attend it.

I would stay here again and recommend others to stay here as well.

Room Tip: We were looking over the pool, it had great views.

Dear Canada Guest,
Glad you enjoyed your pool view room and thanks for your patience regarding Mardi Gras in the Gaslamp. Yes indeed it gets pretty loud with a couple hundred party goers outside the doors. Come back again - we promise there isn't a bead tossing parade every night!

I only stayed here one night to be in the city for a business meeting the next day.

I was pleasantly surprised at the great service, the cute rooms, the nice gym, and the very attentive staff. Highly recommend for the future.

If I had to make only one suggestion it would be that they do not have giant mirrors at the foot of the bed-- it's bad feng shui --totally messed up my energy so I didn't sleep well.
