I'm a big fan of Ms. Krasne's desserts but does she actually know how to run a restaurant or hire people who do? I think not.
The wife and I strolled into the Little Italy location today at 1:45 PM on a Sunday. Milled around for a bit but then saw the hostess for a number to be seated. Told 10-15 minute for a wait.
Standing in the front of the house we could see at least 25% of the tables unoccupied. Their "european brunch" was wrapping up but as I stood there... and stood there... and stood there I saw nobody approach the brunch self-serve line.
Parties ahead of us were being seated about one every five minutes. I was baffled. The waitstaff wasn't hustling. There seemed no imbalance in the serving. After 20 minutes I said "Another 5" and we got ready to walk out.
Incidentally, while standing we almost walked out early just because of the noise level. Very, very high with a kid-sprinkled room and absolutely no sound-deadening features in the room.
Long story short we waited 25 minutes. Then heard our number called. Hostess seated us. I asked about the front of the house policy and she immediately turned away from my question and addressed the spouse with her explanation. I had to specifically request her to look at me in order to respond to MY question. She was dismissive, said they didn't want to "overload" the servers and have us sit at the table unattended. I guess they'd rather we stand around in a gaggle of other waiting customers instead.
The wife and I shared a couple of pieces of the proprietor's masterful dessert recipes along with their typically excellent coffee. Our wait-person was charming and responsive.
And we'll not have that experience again. I'd much rather stand online at Fifth or slip in at a slow hour than endure that inappropriate charade again.
