“Not Bad”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2013

This hotel calls itself a boutique hotel, but I'd say it's more of a nice motel. Parking is only $10 per night, and since we got there early, we were able to secure a spot for all 4 nights. They have 19 spaces for 30 rooms. The room was small but comfortable. Breakfast was adequate. There is a guest laundry open from 9-3, which we used, and it was fine. Next time we would stay closer to the Gaslamp District. There is no elevator on the property, but if they can, the staff will carry bags up and down for you The staff was kind and helpful, but we were on our own to find attractions. Overall, not great, but not bad.

Room Tip: If you can't do stairs, stay on the ground floor. We didn't see a pool or restaurant.

Dear Castlebaer,

Thank you for your comments in regards to your stay at Best Western Cabrillo Garden Inn.

As part of Best Western brand, our property follows the brand standards and based on the quality and the amenities offered, it is considered a boutique hotel.

Also, the size and structure of the hotel does not allow an elevator to be added, however we will make sure our staff will be offering assistance to all our guests.
Thank you again for your review and we hope to see you back soon.

Walk to the restaurants of the Gaslamp District. The rooms were well appointed and very clean. There was street noise but running the fan on low cancelled 98% of it.
Two complaints - spotty wifi service - Get the Ethernet cable from the front desk. Breakfast was late everyone of the 4 days we stayed. Not good for business people on the clock.

Room Tip: 107 is a corner room without a view but very quiet.

This property has been renovated and the interior is wonderfully clean and nicely decorated. Rooms are particularly small, virtually no counter space in the bathroom and poor ventilation (but fortunately you are in SD so open the window). Because of the small rooms the management has place tables and chairs outside of the rooms making the entire exterior on big "lobby" environment. I thought that it was odd in the office area a very visible sign was placed indicating that guests who failed to respond to management's request for quiet would be asked to leave. Wouldn't you know that at 2:45 am, after patiently waiting and hoping that my fellow travelers would "call it a night," I had to resort to complaining and requesting the night clerk to exercise his responsibility and ask for the revelers to go indoors. Because it is in fact is a "motel," you invariably get a different type of traveler so don't be mislead by the sign "luxury suites." The breakfast is in fact much better than typical motel fair w/not only waffles but scrambled eggs, french toast, and bacon. Considering that their are lots of other lodging options and similar prices, we'll probably look for another choice the next time we go to SD.

Room Tip: The closer to the office the better.

Dear Valpo1125,

Thank you for your comments regarding the recent stay at our property.
We do apologize for the fact the Night Clerk was not able to solve the noise issue and we will make sure that our staff will be retrained on handling this type of situations.
In regards to the sign “Luxury Suites”, our property is a boutique hotel and the sign in front of the hotel states ”A small luxury Inn”.
Thank you again for your feedback and we hope to see you back soon.

I had read quite a few comments about this property that worried me before I embarked on my five night stay for business ... I also took my wife and kids. I must say that the negative comments were absolute nonsense. The rooms are small, but the beds are extraordinarily comfortable, making for a fantastic night's sleep. The location is a bit north of the gas lamp, and you will find that the one block trek from B street up to A street is very steep. The hotel is actually set at the corner of 9th Avenue and A street. There is no pool at this property. The breakfast is surprisingly excellent ... because at least you can have eggs for protein instead of all carbs. The breakfast room is small, but the hotel makes up for that with seating outside and a bevy of choices. Remember, we are talking a free breakfast here. I had to travel to the convention center each day and I took the trolley orange line, although I will say that the walk downhill to the convention center down 5th avenue wasn't too bad (I like to walk). The $10/day charge for parking was average for the area, there are other places to park if they run out of room. There are homeless folks sleeping at night on 8th avenue as you walk up from B street to A street, so avoid this block at night if this makes you feel uncomfortable. 7th or 9th avenues are a-ok. The location is very convenient to petco park, if you have the opportunity to watch a Padres game. There are great places to eat very close by that would appeal to both adults and children (6th avenue bistro is excellent and very close). The staff is excellent ... very helpful and friendly. The parking lot and property are monitored with cameras at night, so at least they have some sense of security consciousness. The place really made me change my mind about the Best Western brand. The owner Mr. Chen is very conscientious in ensuring that the guests are comfortable. The fact that this place is elevated is made into an advantage when you consider the rooftop seating area. We were also able to do laundry effectively at the property. There are only 30 rooms at the property, and we would definitely stay there again.

Room Tip: Avoid the ice machine ... there is no elevator, so keep this in mind when accepting a room on the 2n...

My husband and I just finished our trip in CA which started in downtown San Diego. It was stamped with AAA approval which is who we booked it through, however, we were disappointed with the terrible internet connection. When we first arrived they said we should have a connection. It didn't work so my husband called the office and they said a maintenance man would be up to our room. He came while we were out and left a cable. The cable worked, however, it would be connected for a couple of minutes and then it would drop. This went on for the next two days. We checked out Sunday morning. Also on their description, online, it says "minimum of two nights" which we found out through the Best Western 1-800 number that this is not a requirement of Best Western. The room was small for the price, however, very clean. The TV is not a flat screen. The breakfast area is very tiny. The breakfast was of good quality. If you have never been to San Diego beware of the many homeless people. Obviously they are allowed to walk the streets all day and sleep on the sidewalks starting at 8:00p.m. They look in trashcans a lot. Very sad. The cabana area on the very top of the motel is cute and clean. The woman clerk was very nice, however, the man was a bit snippy when I asked if the internet problem was corrected.
Tom and Mary July 2012

Room Tip: If you do not need the internet then stay. If you like downtown San Diego then it's fine.

Dear Mary T,

Thank you for your feedback regarding the recent stay at our property.
We do apologize for the slow Internet connection; we are currently coordinating with the Internet provider in upgrading the system based on the new technology.
In regards to the minimum stay of two nights, this is an option the hotel industry has during high demand season and it is permitted by Best Western.
You have mentioned the homeless populations in downtown area, the San Diego City along with Non-Profit Organizations are working together in assisting and solving this matter.
Also, the hotel is in the process of changing the TV’S to flat screen by the end of this year, we currently have 20% completed.
Thank you again for taking your time to share your experience. Your comments are very important to us in improving our business.

Stayed at this facility for three nights. Room was very nice, but modest. Staff was especially helpful. Breakfast was only slightly above average as a continental style, but certainly adequate.
Location is convenient walking to Gaslamp area. Also near public (trolley) transportation. The flat charge of $10/day for parking at the BW is worth the price in order to be able to feel free to come and go the other attractions which are outlying(such as the Del for lunch).

close to the gaslamp district you'll find this very charming hotel. not too many rooms and very helpful team, they answer you all the questions and really care about their guests.
The rooms are a little bit old-fashioned and dark but clean. Breakfast is very simple, serve in plastic cups/plates. The breakfast room is very small and not very inviting to stay there. Construction of walls very thin, quite load from neighbour rooms and street. room doors don't close entirely, therefore also noise from outside. I would recommend this hotel for its location but I think its too expensive for what you get.
