“Nothing fancy but perfect for dog lovers”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 18, 2014

Check-in was fast and easy. Room was basic, but clean. If you aren't a dog lover or are sensitive to noise, this might not be the best place for you. We could hear every step our upstairs neighbor took, all night long.... Heated pool, great location with tons of places nearby for food. Very simple breakfast in the morning next to the reception area, but it was free so I wont complain. Towels are rough but they work. Shampoo and lotion and soap offered in the room.
Ocean Beach (OB) is a mix between hippies and students and regular people, pretty much all of them own dogs and walk everywhere. We felt safe walking around at night. And the beach! Very close, but not close enough to leave your door open at night to hear the waves. The dog run behind the rooms on the 1st floor was convenient but muddy so I had to wipe my dogs feet off each time to avoid a mess. Some people let their dogs back there with no supervision and we ended up with a bunch of poop on our porch. The dog wash area was fun, though my dog wasn't too happy!

Just wanted to quickly say that despite reviews that mention concerns about noise from dog owners, I had absolutely no issues at this hotel. It was a fantastically cheap and well-located hotel, in the heart of OB, with friendly staff and clean comfortable rooms.

I love Ocean Beach and was very happy to find such a great place for our dog's first trip to the ocean. The staff and other guests were friendly and extremely helpful. The motel is as eclectic as Ocean Beach is. The rooms are basic and as we travel a lot I have learned to take my own sheets, comforter and towels. Breakfast was quick and easy and the never ending coffee was nice. The dog bathing station was wonderful although the dog was not impressed having to shower on holidays. The dog park is awesome and a stones throw away. We had dinner at Shades with our dog who enjoyed a meal off the doggie menu. I found the whole area very dog friendly and it was easy to walk with him anywhere. The only thing I found a bit crazy was the one time charge of 30 dollars for having the dog. Every other hotel we have stayed at has charged 10 dollars a night. Unfortunately we had only planned for a one night stay so it seemed steep. Next time we will just have to stay longer. It is nice to have a fenced yard off the sliding door and patio furniture to sit on while the dog was out but I have to say our above neighbour was rather loud when they walked making sleep difficult. Pretty typical of being on the lower floor of a motel. Over all a great place to stay with your dog.

Dog run feature was nice, but dogs were not monitored by owners. Noise from neighbors resulted in startled dogs and a sleepless night. Dated furniture, great location but would not go back. Lock on sliding door needed to be checked and bolt didn't work at all.

This hidden gem in Ocean Beach, San Diego, CA is a must for dog lovers on vacation or short getaway. The staff is awesome, the rooms are clean and comfortable, and the beach, specifically set aside for dogs to run off leash, is a stone's throw from the property. There's even a grassy area for dog walking if your furry friend is beach shy. Pickup gloves (for dog poop) are provided free. The Inn also provides a couple of tubs for dog washing. Parking, essential for visitors to the area, is free, as is daily continental breakfast. All the upstairs rooms of this two story property have a view of the ocean, and downstairs rooms are tiled so furry friends can run to their heart's content without damaging anything. The downstairs rooms also have a dog run accessible through the sliding glass doors. Upstairs rooms have a balcony for the quiet cocktail or coffee (coffee is free in the lobby 24/7), or just watching the boats go by. There are accommodations for short or long term stays, including a family apartment fully furnished for all your needs. Lydia (front desk), Jen (housekeeping), Steve and Bret (maintenance crew), and Declan (he keeps the property clean as a whistle!) are never too busy to answer any questions you may have about the area. We leave our car parked and bought a bus pass to take us to anywhere we want to explore. For seniors the cost of a monthly pass is a mere $18...quite a savings for around town travel. While located north of town, the property is close to everything you could possibly need. We enjoy walking about five miles a day and just enjoying the sunshine and fresh salt air. Treat yourself to this gem. Just be sure to call ahead for reservations as the rooms fill up quickly year round.

Room Tip: There are no bad rooms at the Inn and no bad days in Ocean Beach. Even cloudy days are peaceful! The...

Service: Ocean's Villa's employees CARE about customers and give extra efforts to make a stay relaxing. Special note is Staff Member Lydia, who is always cheerful, respectful and professional. She efficiently and accurately helps all even when super busy. She remembers us, long time repeat customers and our pups which is an admirable trait demonstrating retention appreciation and guaranteeing repeat business especially in the slow times as we usually visit S.D in winter off season. We always clean our rooms before we depart as we are happy to make employee's tasks easier because we are treated so well by front office staff, Matt and Robert were great too. Thanks to Ocean Villa Inn for empowering Leaders who make your establishment stand out from competitors.

Location: steps from an off leash dog beach, which emits a pungent doggy odor, ha, but is great if you have furry loved ones

Ocean Villa, from top to bottom, is dog-friendly, so not surprisingly, you get a lot of dogs there. That means the dogs may bark when they encounter one another. On this trip we did not bring our dogs, because we wanted to see what the place was like without the distraction. We would definitely go back.

The room was a decent size and faced the marsh and dog beach beyond. Our second-floor room had a deck that is big enough so you can go out and enjoy a drink and look at the view. Just a wonderful place to relax. First floor units have patios, but I'm betting that most of them have only a decent ground-level view of the marsh and sand -- nothing like what you get on the second floor.

The beds were older and kind of soft, but afforded us a decent night's sleep. The room contained a fridge which (unlike the refrigerator in any other hotel room we have been in) blasted us with cold air when we opened it. The bathroom was well-kept, but the shower walls needed a good scrub-down. Also, the ventilating fan in our bathroom did not work. I mentioned it to the desk clear when we left, and she said they would get right on it.

Speaking of the desk clerk, they were friendly and helpful. There is a small pool outside the office. We didn't go in, but it was clean. Breakfast in the morning was heavy on carbs, but with a decent selection.

The location is good. If you want to go to Dog Beach, it's just a walk through the marsh and you're there. To get to the main part of Ocean Beach is a pretty decent walk or a very short drive. You just have to understand that parking at Ocean Beach can be a real challenge.

We'll go back -- with our dogs next time. We love the location, and that view is wonderful. It may not be squeaky clean all the time, but the good far oetweighs the bad.

Room Tip: Second floor, for the view from the deck.
