“Great Place for Dogs”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 18, 2012

This hotel does not have all of the amenities, but the dogs love it. To start with with I will list the pros:

The dog beach is right there;
They cater to dogs;
When you book the deluxe room the shared dog run is great. You can wake up at noight and let the dogs out easily.

Cons:
The rooms are outdated and yes, you can hear noises from the neighbors and upstairs people;
In the common dog run, some of the owners are not as observant as others;
A little over priced for the rooms, but it is right on the beach.

Our room did not have any washcloths or face towels and had two very mediocre bath towels.

Overall, if you want a place that caters to your four legged babies, and want easy access to the dog beach, then this is the place for you. Our two babies loved it here.

Great place to stay with your pup...definitely not luxury, but staff is very attentive and personable. Our first assigned room reeked of stale smoke, and it was supposed to be non-smoking. We asked to be relocated and were moved to a studio room without a patio and yard, but it met our needs. Area is quiet except for airport comings and goings, but that did not disrupt our sleep.

Tile floors in room left our barefeet black.The foyer of the bathroom has chunks out of the wall where dogs have left their "mark" and the paint and drywall has fallen off. We requested that our room be cleaned, and it was fresh and sparkling when we returned.

The inn would benefit greatly from an annual maintenance...paint, new bedding and linens. Breakfast offering was fine, it included hard-cooked eggs, thin bagels and other breads, oatmeal, dry cereal, fruit, mini-muffins, and coffee or tea.

Right next to "Dog Beach"., a couple blocks away from downtown Ocean Beach, and within 10 minutes of Mission Beach parks and activities. Cost of room is commensurate with others in the general area, mostly because of its being pet-friendly.

If you're seeking a pet-friendly lodging without the frills, the Ocean Villa Inn is a good value.

Let me start by saying that if you're expecting a "Hilton" experience you won't get it with this hotel - BUT THAT'S NOT A BAD THING! This hotel is for dog lovers who want to take them on vacation with the family. The hotel is clean, the staff is friendly. It's less than a 5 minute walk to Dog Beach, and if you get a "dog" room on the ground floor, these rooms open up to a fenced in area, so you don't have to keep your dog cooped up in the room until you're ready to go. The hotel serves a small (free) continental breakfast and you can arrange to get maid service for the dog rooms - but - the dogs cannot be in the room. There are a few restaurants in the area that accept dogs (Shades and O'Bistro were my favorites) and they even supply water and dog biscuits. At Shades, you can actually buy a doggie dinner for your pooch!

Too EXPENSIVE for what you get! The hard, bouncy mattresses (cheap hotel-grade) (they'll tell you it's new) plus the paper thin walls and ceilings will rob your sleep as next door & top floor guests' partying, walking on floors, tv's can be clearly heard. Broken, dirty items in every room, like the freezer or AC or door lock. Strong smells of of cigarettes and marijuana (from nearby guests) in rooms and on patio. Breakfast buffet is plain and always depleted. Parking spaces are tight, crowded. Public grassy area, outside hotel back fence, has secluded bushes and is popular with transients, people having sex and exposing genitals, drunks and shady people making possible drug deals. From your patio,you can smell urine, feces of dog beach and bums using nearby lot as bathroom. Some guests turn their dogs loose in common area and don't go out to watch them or to pickup the dog's poop or keep their dogs from going in other rooms. New manager is rude. You can get nearby, quality beach hotels by using expedia, priceline and bidding- you'll get more for your money.

Room Tip: Don't stay here unless they lower prices.

It was an alright stay, the rooms were large, everything was pretty clean except for the carpet, dogs in adjoining rooms were quiet, view was great, kind of a far walk from the shopping district, and later at night heard a couple of gunshots.

The hotel itself is nothing special, it's slightly run down and could use updating. But the advantage to this hotel is the location, right on dog beach...and the fact that you can stay here with your dog. I appreciate that they are dog friendly, your dog will appreciate that you can walk right out to dog beach in a matter of 1-2 minutes. If you are looking for a 5 star hotel, this is not the place for you. If you want a comfortable place to stay with your dog, near the beach this is the place. Can't get any closer than this.

Its due for renovation, the walls are thin. Not glamorous. The front desk was helpful when the upstais neighbors were loud. They moved us because they could & apologized for the inconvevience. BUT... It's doggy Disneyland. There's a dog wash at the side of the hotel, the beach is 100yds away, ocean beach is right there too. 90% of the restaurants & shops are dog friendly & within walking distance. Great sushi nearby. Keep an open mind & remember ur in San Diego for the beach not the hotel room. We went on a quiet weekend & are going back for the 4th of July, I'm sure it will be noisy & busy but it's worth seeing the dogs have such a good time& u don't have to fight beach traffic or find a parking space. Have a glass of wine & turn down the lights & the room won't bother you:)
