“Quaint”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 26, 2013 via mobile

This sweet little lighthouse was decommissioned after a few years of use because it wasn't very effective. It has been beautifully preserved and you can climb up to the top of the staircase and look into the rooms. There is also a lighthouse historical museum next door. The views here are unbelievable! Come on a clear day and spend time here gazing out on the bay!

“Great view of San Diego and a great hit of history”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 25, 2013

Cabrillo Point Monument and Old Point Loma Lighthouse park was a great place to visit. There was plenty of parking, a very nice visitor's center with a small museum detailing the history of the place, and exhibits of the animals that are found on the land. The walk up to the lighthouse includes whale-watching exhibits and there are a few covered areas to sit and look at the view. Since it is mercilessly sunny, this is a nice touch (we wore hats the whole time, being Pacific Northwest folks and unused to constant sun.) For coastal defense aficionados, there are a few remains of an early fortification here and you can walk down to part of a Battery Ashburn end station. The radio building has a small exhibit on how the fort worked and on the road in there is an old entry, though it's now used as storage and not accessible. Since its a state park, there is a fee to get in but you could spend a fair amount of time here if you enjoy good views sprinkled with history. The lighthouse can be entered though you cannot go all the way up to the Fresnel. A similar Fresnel is on display in the lightkeeper's house next door which has a small museum that introduces the family that lived there, how things worked and the history.

“Original Point Loma Lighthouse”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 22, 2013

If you're into old 'new world' lighthouses this is a must see. Although no longer a working lighthouse, it was replaced by a hoitee toitee, high-end computerized one down at the bottom of Point Loma at the Coast Guard's Commandant's residence. As you walk up the circular steps to the lens, you can see the period correct, compartmentalized rooms which makes the climb all worthwhile.

“Interesting look into a lighthouse”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 21, 2013

We arrived in San Diego for a vacation and decided to have a relaxing first afternoon and visit Cabrillo National Park. The entire park is wonderful, amazing views and the lighthouse is open to tour and the barn. They also have a really great gift shop down at the Cabrillo monument.

I noticed a sign that they allow people to go up into the light area, we could only look up into it, a few times a year. If you are a lighthouse lover you may want to plan your trip around that.

“GREAT”

Loved the history of the lighthouse - Park ranger was very informative. Beautiful area. Was an actual working lighthouse in the day.
