The former legendary Broken Yolk (BY) breakfast experience just isn't happening at this congested site in the Midway District of Point Loma. There were the usual parking and long wait hassles like at many Broken Yolks, which now include 11 stores. The main disappointments were that our "hot cakes" were not hot and the side dishes were insipid. Although the quality of their egg dishes and that fresh-squeezed grapefruit juice are still among the best, overall I think there's something broken in their formula here. What was once a great name in San Diego casual eating was described by my breakfast partner as "same as Denny's".
Formerly a nondescript "Brick Alley" sports bar, this BY location in the Midway District suffers from terrible traffic, congestion and lack of parking. A Saturday or Sunday summer weekend is a mistake to come here, especially if the nearby Swap Meet is in full swing. Bottom line: Try one of the 3 or 4 other BY stores in San Diego and arrive early, you'll be glad you did. Be sure the food brought to your table is 100% satisfactory or you should send it back. "The Monk" (that's me!) won't be coming to this BY again, but the other ones are probably still great.
