“California the way it should be, a perfect hotel for San Diego Sightseeing.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 2, 2010

I just returned for a 3 night weekend stay here with a 45 person family wedding party from Midwest and Eastcoast, and it was really nice, relaxing, hip, trendy and well managed. The rooms are really cool, very Cali in feel, and the bars, pool, and beach lounge great to hangout. Its 3 blocks to the train, and easy walk or taxi to everywhere, or walk, or rent a bike. You can stay in the convention hotels, or the typical sterile ones by the Gaslamp district, which they all looked nice, even the Courtyard and Embassy Suites, but those are cookie cutter hotels that you may as well be in Minneapolis or Atlanta.

The W nails it again, with a nice value property thats unique in decor, feel, mood and ambiance, and everyone in the wedding party loved it, from age 65 to 18.

Rent a car, and take in the sights of Del Mar, La Jolla, and even LA is 2.5 hours north for a day trip.

I stay 4-5 star everywhere, travel 120 days a year, domestic and international, and this hotel at $150 is a delight.

The hotel service was the best. It started out at the door when me and my wife first walked in. The front desk agent Melissa Humble made us feel like we were royalty. She really took care of us. Also the spa was the best. The guy (sorry for not remembering your name) at the front desk at the spa was funny and made my wife feel great when reserving the spa treatment for her and I. To make sure he get credit he worked on Saturday 2/27/10 around 6pm. Also the two people that gave us the treatments were the best.

If you are in San Diego, The W is a must.

Great stay for a business trip. Nice bar and restaurant with attentive staff. Close to nearby Gas Lamp district for dining and entertainment. Free car service as well.

The W is probably a little too "hip" for my taste, the decor is modern, no art on the wall, light blue color paint, but it's nice, and the bed is really comfortable.
We arrived and got the room in two minutes flat. The staff are all cheerful and curteous. The elevators require cardkey to go up, so I had to fumble around in there a bit every time, but it's fine. Parking is what it is. We knew from other reviews here that valet parking in downtown SD is upward of $30 no matter which hotel you stay in, so we just factored it in. In general it was a great pleasant hotel to sleep in. We did not explore any other part of the hotel as we were just there to go to the Zoo, Seaworld and the USS Midway. But I'd definitely come back.

We booked through Amex directly and they charged my card as soon as I booked but when we checked in the hotel didn't see our payment. It took about 30 mins standing at the front desk which was annoying but the mgr did keep saying sorry and sent up 2 bottles of wine once we got into the room so that made up for it. The room itself was a little on the small side but nice enough. The window seat thing was cool and the bed was great. The beach bar thing they have on the 2nd fl was pretty cool though a tad on the expensive side ($40 with tip for 1 burger and fries, glass of wine and vodka tonic.) parking as everyone says is way expensive but what do ya do. They have other public Lots in the area but they are $20 for 24 hr so I figured it was worth the extra $12 to be able to get my car when I wanted it. Another nice feature about this hotel is that they give you a free ride in an Acura if you know where your going and at what time you just call down and let them know and the car will be waiting for you

At first we were apprehensive about the downtown location-near the courthouse, bondsmen etc. However, we found it to be a 6 block walk to little Italy for dinner, an easy walk to the Coronado ferry to head to the beach, and not to far from the gas lamp district.
We found the service to be OK. The beds were very comfortable and the room and bathroom clean. Nice down pillows and duvet. The lobby decor seemed to be striving for a trendy nightclub look.

The staff at the W is excellent. They know the city, and are happy to help with your every need. I will stay there again. It is a couple blocks to the water, and a pleasant walk to Gaslamp. Rice is a decent restaurant.
