“Simply DREADFUL service!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 27, 2012

We walked in last night around 5 pm. Big crowd across the street at the Horton awaiting some show or another. Front counter person was on the phone talking to someone, not a customer obviously. AND THE PLACE WAS EMPTY!!! Other than the employees, there was not a single person eating in the place. There is a reason perhaps. We ordered two dishes and asked for lemons for our water. Sorry, no lemons. No limes. In a Mexican fast food place, no citrus? Food was OK and just that, but severely overpriced which explains partly the lack of patrons. As we dined, I asked for more salsa. Waitress responded, 'when you're done with that I'll bring you more'. Seems that the 'tip jar' - posted with this warning displayed prominently and ominously 'FOOD TASTES BETTER WHEN YOU TIP' which we did not add to was more important than decent customer service, thus earning this review, and this tip to the management and to the prospective patrons: To management, you need to get rid of that bozo who demonstrates such a bad aaaa-teee-toood that one is immediately turned off. No wonder the place is empty! And on a Sunday afternoon, with tons of people on the street. Second, your food is overpriced. WAY overpriced, perhaps due to the wages you're paying to useless employees. Not providing lemons or limes? Simply stupid. To patrons, there are SO MANY decent places in the Gaslamp with good service that you have no need to enter this place much less eat there. Restrooms are OK so that might be the only reason I would recommend visiting. In short, horrible service, over-priced food means that Bolillo should not be on your short list of fast food places to visit unless you're a glutton for punishment. Now about those lemons please...

Absolute impressed to the nines by this place, no exaggeration the sandwiches, side items and drinks were all delicious with ingredients of a high quality and very reasonable prices. Would recommend to anyone wanting a good sized lunch or reasonably sized dinner. Lovely staff also, cute atmosphere, friendly and inviting...will definitely be back.

“Delicious, fast, and fresh”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 28, 2012

My hotel directed me to try Subway when I asked for some fast food. Thankfully I found this place instead. Both tortas (queso only and a jamon and queso) I tried on different days were good, and the side salad I got was refreshing due to the sliced granny smith apples and tangy mustard vinaigrette. The surprise jalapeno popper with my order was a pleasant surprise. This isn't some breaded bar jalapeno popper either. It's a fresh jalapeno, stuffed with cheese, and wrapped in a slice of bacon. Both times I stopped in, the staff at the registers were friendly too.

“Bolillo is Cool”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 17, 2011

A very cool fast-food torta place. The decor is trendy with an eye for detail (interestingly shaped plates and glasses), the food is very fresh, and they have a full bar. The tortas come with a jalapeno pepper stuffed with cheese and wrapped in bacon, and a choice of very small sides--we had an interesting salad. We ordered a Torta Cubano, which was nothing like a Florida Cuban sandwich but was very good, and a sloppy-Joe-like Torta Carne Asada which could have used a bit more Asada and/or other fillings. The bread is fresh and delicious. Bolillo also serves breakfast dishes, salads, and soups. I would have given the place a "five" except for the prices, which are $1-$2 too high (in my view).
