“authentic thai in contemporary environment”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 23, 2013

We had dinner at Koon Thai Kitchen with our two children. This was the most authentic and fantastic tasing Thai food that we have ever had in SoCal.
The dishes are original in taste and presented in beauty. The restaurant is a great surprise in its modern interior with clean design and very friendly staff. We stumbled into it because we were hungry, we will come back because we enjoy it.

“Great little Thai restaurant”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 24, 2013

I went with a group of people and we were all very impressed. This is a smaller restaurant located in a strip-mall so might easily be overlooked. (parking at lunch time was a bit tight) The decor was very tasteful, the food, service and prices were excellent. I'm definitely looking forward to eating here again soon.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 28, 2012

I have never been to a Thai restaurant that had floating market noodles. Let me say that i used to order this dish almost every weekend when living in Virginia and now that i have found a place that sells it here, I'm hooked! Very good flavors and decent size for 5 bucks a bowl! The tod mun pla is also really good here. Will be coming here soon to enjoy a nice bowl of noodles!

“Very Good Food, Nice Atmosphere.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 29, 2012

Enjoyed a family get-together at Koons. While, from the outside, it looks like just another shopping mall Thai restaurant, it is surprisingly attractive and modern inside. Not "cheesy" faux-Thai decorations. We were a large party and the service was good and attentive. Appetizers were xlnt and hot. The menu was very descriptive and the dishes were ample and very tasty. Servers were very attentive to the degree of spices that were requested on the individual choices. Very reasonable pricing. A good choice in San Diego.

“New place for Thai food. They are on the right track”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 1, 2011

During one of our trips to our usual breakfast locale we happened to spot this new establishment. We made a mental note and then next time we had a hankering for the sweet and spicy tang of the KT we pulled the trigger.

Upon entering for the first time we were concerned by lack of clientele however we did notice that the one other group present in the restaurant were of Thai descent which was a good sign. The decor of the restaurant was done very well. Dark browns and light tans with Thai hangings adorned the walls. The tables and chairs were simple and small but the placements were well done and hinted a bit of class and elegance.

The gentleman that greeted us was very polite and seated us quickly. Later we surmised that he was either the owner or manager. The young lady that waited on us was nice enough but a bit inexperienced. Smacking gum while taking someone's order does not present well if a establishment is trying to attract the finer diner. Another thing that was a miss was the music that was blaring thought the sound system. In an establishment such as this one would more expect to hear the soft sounds of Thai strings and flutes magically serenading the sense. Not so this day. We were bombarded with AC/DC, Rolling Stones and Tina Turner, which don't get me wrong, is good music but was a complete miss in an attempt to create a pleasant dining experience.

Now on to the food: We were very much impressed with all of our choices. I had the fried duck with sautéed vegetables and my wife had the Thai Soup. A cautionary note here: The spice scale is a bit more towards the hot side than we were used to. Now, it has been a few years since I have lived in Bangkok but Koon Thai's definition of medium was a bit much for the both of us. Next time we will go with mild, and yes we liked it enough that we will be back. The meal was quite inexpensive considering the quality of the food so we definitely recommend stopping in if you have the opportunity.

See you on the road please don't be one of "those."

John
