“Ok place if you are not planning to stay in the hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 weeks ago

This is a budget hotel with budget services, Its location is not the best, but you access easily to public transport that can take you to the main viewpoints in San Diego, even they are on walking distance from this hotel; Balboa Park is very near from there.
The first day we arrived , the room we got was totally humid and super small, the AC wasn't working, so we requested a Room change, the staff was very accessible and we got a room change without a problem. Fridge, Flat screen and clean bathrooms are included in every room.
The hotel has a nice courtyard where you can take a break, have a nice chat and have a smoke; the fountain apart from small is very relaxing.
Overall the hotel is small , on a budget but great if you are planning not to stay there for long but for resting at the end of the day, with us this was the case; we went to San Diego and we walked a lot in the daytime to discover the city.

We have enjoyed our stay here. Extremely clean, comfortable beds, fridge, microwave and all amenities, they havent forgotten anything here. Windows that open for fresh air, and a very big continental breakfast. The courtyard with flowers and fountain is a refreshing change to look out onto or sit and use your laptop or read. Much better than the stuffy hotels we have stayed in. If you want value for money with it being centrally located come here. Very helpful friendly staff, and plenty of cafes restaurants 15 min walk into the gaslamp quarters. Excellent value for what it is!

Room Tip: Choose a room on the left side as you walk in, just a bit noisy with planes.. we chose a double bed...

Overall, we enjoyed our 26-night stay at this hotel. Rooms are basic but clean and serviceable. Flat screen TV, fridge and microwave are a plus. We enjoyed the nutritious breakfast with many choices. The inviting, lush green courtyard with a fountain reminds us of serene Spanish courtyards in Barcelona. Centrally located, convenient to transportation. Most of the staff are very friendly and accommodating, especially manager Mica and maintenance crew (John, Leroy, etc) who went out of their ways to make our stay a memorable one. Thank you!

This hotel is in a good location. The rooms are a bit small but are very clean. Each room has a fridge and microwave which are very useful. The staff could be more friendly, the breakfast needs cereal but is ok. The main problem is parking, there is none on site and it costs $12 a day to use the parking across the road.

We are still in this room and our experience is so bad so far that I couldn't wait to write. The staff was rude, untrained, careless and disrespectful, calling customers "dude" and cursing at the credit card machine when he made an entry mistake. The check-in process took over thirty minutes, and when we got to the room it was less than acceptable. The pillows were thrown on the bed sloppily, there was a small blood-color stain on the top blanket (very obvious), and the sheets were wrinkled like someone was on them. The floor was unvacuumed. The a/c barely worked. And when we talked to the hotel staff about it they offered to "clean" it or send us on our way at 11pm with nowhere else to go. When he finally agreed to refund us for one of the nights we stayed, he would not offer the refund on the spot so we are waiting to see if we get the refund tomorrow.

Aside from that... it only gets worse. This area is TERRIBLE. We were uncomfortable leaving our car on the street (there is no parking for the hotel). There were sirens all night. Planes fly right over the building at all hours of the night. And we can safely say many use it for prostitution, with men walking scantily clothed ladies out all hours of the day and night. Do not... DO NOT bring your families here. Worst experience at a hotel ever. We will never stay at an America's Best chain hotel ever again.

I would like to apologize for your bad experience. It really surprises me to hear that your room was not ready for guest use. We have supervisors in the Housekeeping department to inspect guest rooms prior to check in. It is obvious that this system failed for your stay. I would ask for you to contact me directly as I am interested in learning more about your check in experience. Your feedback helps me with retraining to appropriate desk staff.

I am confident in saying that this hotel is not used for prostitution. We have staff on property 24 hours a day that monitors the property. We also have an up-to-date security monitoring system. Lastly, since we are located in downtown San Diego, we work closely with the San Diego Police Department, and always report any suspicious activity.

Once again, I apologize for your stay. We are working hard to improve the overall performance of this hotel.

It was a good stay in all. Yes its only a budget property so you get what you pay for however i was happily surprised with the overall stay. I was there for 11 nights so god a good feel of the hotel. I already knew it was on the flight path which is quite loud but i was aware of it before travel and it wasn't too bad. Luckily the jet lag kept me asleep most of the time.
The good points:
*The room was comfortable as perfectly sized for 1 traveler and would of been OK for two as well.
*Internet was fine, not the quickest but not terrible.
*Breakfast was what it was but did the job perfectly. there was a couple of really good muffins!
*Location is fantastic. an easy and safe 15 minute walk to the Gaslamp was perfect and made it simple for getting some lovely food all with easy accessibility.
*TV worked well.
*Housekeeping was always good and even with me leaving quite late in the morning most mornings the room was always cleaned by the time i came back later on.

Negatives:
*the sound proofing of the rooms is not great. yes the airplanes are loud as they are close but i was well aware of this before hand. its more for when there are other guests who tended to be loud (on the Friday/Saturday nights) and the sound certainly carries from the courtyard or the walk ways and seemed to be amplified by the time it got to my room. Not the hotels fault as it is the design of the building with the central courtyard that the sound seems to bounce around but the windows/door do seem to lack in sound proofing. Not the worst thing as it was only 1 or 2 nights whilst during the week it was perfectly fine.
*shower often only had cold water. i didn't complain about it as the cold shower was quite refreshing and i cannot comment how quick it could of been fixed as i didn't make a fuss as it didnt bother me too much but could other people.
*parking can be a pain but there is the car park over the road or parking on the road is easily accessible just need to pay for it which is a bit annoying but its not the fault of the hotel again.

Staff:
In all honestly i had so little dealings with them its difficult to make much of a judgement. the lady on check in was quite abrupt and kind of rude with regards to my reservation (deposit or payment -i had already paid for the hotel but this wasn't something she was aware about or about being able to leave a cash deposit which i had asked about before i traveled - i don't have a credit card) but Robbie/Bobby (i lost the card he gave me) on check out was much more friendly and the complete opposite. other than that i didn't have any other dealings with them rather than the occasional greeting .

All in all a good stay for location and value and i would certainly return as it ticket a lot of the boxes i needed the hotel for. Will look at returning later on this year (price dependent)

Room Tip: i went for a high floor room away from the lift and ended up in 509 in the far corner. it was away f...

The staff is very unprofessional and rude, the women specifically. The rooms all smelled like smoke and felt dirty and stuffy. The blow dryer and TV did not work. And they charged me twice on my credit card. I would never come back to this hotel even if it was free.

Room Tip: the size of one double bed room is the size of a little kids room. Extremely, extremely small.

I would like to apologize for your stay at our property. We have worked very hard with the guest service staff to improve the guest experience. I invite you to contact me directly. I would like to learn more about your stay in order to avoid a duplicate experience for another guest. I would also like to correct the double charge to your credit card.

We ask that any guest who stays with us, to contact management during their stay if they are unhappy with anything. I have a Manager on Duty available 24 hours a day.

Lastly, I understand that you may be unhappy with the size of our rooms. Almost all rooms on this property has been built for a maximum of 2 people. The average room size for this hotel is 200 square feet. Our rooms have either one full sized bed, one queen bed or 2 twin beds. We work hard to keep our rooms clean and comfortable for your stay.

Thank you for the feedback.
