“A great location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 3, 2013

The Westin Gaslamp Quarter is not actually in the Gaslamp District but two blocks away. However, that does not detract from the great location (which is the main reason I've given four stars) - adjacent to the Horton Plaza Mall, a short walk to the Gaslamp area and many other downtown attractions including Petco Park.

There's nothing truly special about the hotel - the exterior can best be described as ordinary, it has been updated but the rooms are on the smallish side, there's only one restaurant and the bar is somewhat impersonal and open to the lobby. The service is, however, excellent right from the time you pull up in your car through check in.

My beef - parking is very expensive ($36 a day) though this is generally the case in downtown San Diego.

We stayed in room 1407 which was a "deluxe city view". As noted above, it was on the smallish side but it was quite comfortable.

The Westin Gaslamp Quarter is perfectly situated in a downtown San Diego that only gets better and better. Not that long ago, you pretty much went to San Diego for Mission Bay and the Zoo. Now, with a revitalized downtown and Gaslamp Quarter making beautiful use of turn-of-the-century buildings, there are more bars, restaurants, clubs, shopping and small theatre than you could probably pack into a single trip. Along with the harbor, baseball stadium, and other attractions all serviced by the incredible "trolley" light rail system. The Westin's in the middle of it all. The hotel is straightforward, with a design leaning toward the essentials. Not a lot of opulence, but everything you need. The staff is incredibly efficient and warm, from desk staff to concierge to bell staff, valets, and maintenance. Anyone who travels knows that the takeaway from a stay in a hotel is an accumulation of little things, and the Westin does all the little things right.

The rooms are a bit compact, but adequate, the colors relaxing, the bathrooms well designed. And, of course, the Heavenly Bed. The dining is, like the hotel, stripped to the essentials, with a restaurant / buffet and a small snack stand (that closes early). Perhaps because there are so many good restaurants just outside the door, the hotel decided against its own "fine dining" room.

Westin hotels tend to be well managed, extremely clean, and well maintained, and the Gaslamp Quarter hotel is no exception. If you're looking for a fantastic HOTEL experience, with all the bells and whistles, there are probably more glamorous or romantic choices. For comfort, good service, and easy access to all the city proper has to offer, The Westin Gaslamp Quarter covers the bases. I'd recommend an upper floor, for a better view, and that you request a "bay view," as the "city view" tends to be a whole lot of rooftop.

Room Tip: Our a/c system had been turned off (probably to conserve energy), which we didn't realize till t...

Thank you for taking the time to post a review of your recent stay on TripAdvisor. You’re right! downtown San Diego and the Gaslamp Quarter have certainly changed over the years and we are delighted to be located right in the heart of this magnificent transformation.

It was wonderful to read that you found the staff and service throughout the hotel to be “incredible” and that we do all the little things right. It is very important to us that our guests enjoy their experience and are left with a memorable impression – so it’s rewarding to hear - Mission Accomplished!

We hope to see you again soon.

This hotel has a great location to downtown and walking distance to all the amenities.
The staff are all wonderful, we were greeted by Brianna at the front desk and when she found out it was our anniversary, she checked with her manager and upgraded us to the 16th floor with a bay view. What a beautiful room and great view of the bay, the room is a good size and the heavenly bed made our stay even better. The room also had a mini fridge, which came in handy and they even supplied us with two bottled waters everyday during our one week stay.
We ordered pizza from the restaurant downstairs, was very good.
We had dinner downstairs the last night, bit pricey for portion of steak that you got, but overall wasn't bad.
The best part of our stay was the staff, from the front desk to the concierge and to the valets out front.
All made our stay very memorable.

Room Tip: Try to get a room highest floor with a bay view.

Belated Happy Anniversary and thank you for choosing to spend it with us! It was wonderful to read that Brianna was able to make your stay even more special by upgrading you to a great room with a terrific view. But reading that the staff was the best part of your stay and very memorable, really made my day!

Thank you again for staying with us and we hope to welcome you back the next time you are in San Diego.

Kind regards,

We booked last minute but got a great deal! It was a beautiful place to stay and we felt safe in the midst of Downtown San Diego. ALL of the staff was very friendly and helpful! I would definitely return here for a visit!

I had stayed in several other hotels recently and none of the beds were even close to being as comfortable as these ones were!

I’m thrilled to know you enjoyed your last minute stay and found the hotel to be beautiful. I was also pleased to read that you found our Heavenly bed to be the most comfortable bed you’ve experienced. In case you didn’t know, you can purchase a Heavenly bed mattress and all the linens by going to www.westin-hotelsathome.com or purchase directly from either Nordstrom or Pottery Barn. A great way to enjoy a Heavenly night’s sleep every night!

I went with 3 teenagers. We really enjoyed the stay! From the time the valet service ran to greet us every time we drove up to enjoying the cold bottle of water when we left everything was very nice! Special note it costs $36/day for valet but they work exceptionally hard to please you!

The hotel itself was what I expected...clean, good size rooms, decent views, good food; but the Customer Service was amazing! I had ankle surgery 3 weeks prior to my stay and they arranged a scooter for the week since the convention center is several blocks away, and above that they did nothing but accommodate anything I needed and did so with a huge smile on their faces. My keys de-activated twice and they came upstairs within 60 seconds of me calling down. If you like being treated how a consumer should be treated I would definitely recommend staying here!

First, I’d like to wish you a speedy recovery from your recent ankle surgery. And secondly, I want to thank you for taking the time to post such a wonderful review on TripAdvisor and for choosing The Westin San Diego Gaslamp Quarter.

I was extremely pleased to read how happy you were with the “amazing” service you received. We believe that stellar customer service is what sets us apart and it is very rewarding to hear just how memorable an impression the staff made on your stay. I hope you are able to return one day and enjoy all the city has to offer - without the need for a scooter!

The location is perfect! You are in the heart of everything and within walking distance to delicious restaurants, fun area attractions and shopping. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and would recommend staying here. The staff was friendly and helpful always offering assistance and recommendations. Concierge had lots of great recommendations as well and helped map out things that were a must see. Rooms were very comfortable and their beds are truly heavenly :) Clean, modern and comfortable. We will definitely return... San Diego is a beautiful city and this hotel is in the perfect place to help you enjoy all it has to offer! Couple things for your must do list.. Coronado, La Jolla, the San Diego Zoo and definitely check out Seaport Village, Little Italy and the Gaslamp Quarter... Hundreds of restaurants just minutes away too! If you are looking for an ideal location with great service, then definitely check this out.

Room Tip: Request a higher floor to enjoy the view of the city and bay.

So happy to read that you not only enjoyed your stay but plan on returning to the Westin! I’d have to agree, San Diego is a beautiful city, and our location makes sightseeing - and just about anything else you would want to do – a breeze. Especially when there’s so much to do nearby and all of it just a few steps from our front door. Our Concierge team does a great job of making recommendations and ensuring that our guests make the most of their time here and I’m glad you found their suggestions helpful.

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with feedback on your stay. We look forward to welcoming you back!

Kind regards
