My husband and I stayed at the Rancho Bernardo Inn for two nights the last week in June to celebrate his birthday. We had booked a room in the Greens building. We had to change our reservation because of a family emergency, but the reservation clerk assured us we could still have the original room we had booked, as it was a Tuesday and Wednesday night. Unfortunately when we arrived, there were no rooms in the Greens building due to a very large group. We were given a second floor room in the Vista building overlooking the spa. The room was very spacious, had a cathedral ceiling and had the the details already noted by other reviewers, although our Keurig coffee pot did not work properly. We liked the fact that there were 2 large comfortable chairs in addition to the office style chair. This is an older property and the decor is a little dated. The overall ambience of the property is lovely with an Old California feel; lots of indoor/outdoor spaces to sit and relax.
Overall our experience was compromised by the large group and the other groups that arrived later. There are 2 main restaurants, Veranada and the newly opened Avant. The group had booked most of the Veranda restaurant, so we could not eat there until 9:30pm. I had already looked at the menu of the new restaurant Avant and did not like it, but in the end it was are only choice, as we did not want to eat in our room or at 9:30pm................Avant has a very nice ambience. The service was very accommodating. The food was awful. I didn't eat my crab and avocado salad after the first bite. My husband ordered steak tartare which was cooked. He later got sick from it. The wine options by the glass are limited to what they call wine on tap selections, which are basically poor quality box wines. Chardonnay by the glass? Not available in Avant. The maitre d' Robert did come by for our feedback. Upon checkout the bill from Avant was removed from our bill. Subsequently we had a breakfast and dinner in Veranda which were good. You can get a decent glass of Chardonnay in Veranda.
We reserved a round of golf, but our options were limited to very early morning or 2:00 pm because the group had a tournament. We opted for the 2:00 tee time in spite of the warm temperature of 85 degrees. Richard the starter was so kind to let us play together, and was on the course bringing fresh cold water on numerous occasions. We enjoyed the course. Mostly wide fairways with the ladies tees in friendly positions. You can get tokens in the golf shop for a bucket of balls, get your cart and use the driving range at the private Country Club next door, which we did. There is a Cafe adjacent to the first tee which serves sandwiches etc. and a beverage/food cart that circulates on the course.
We did not use the spa, but the pool area is very welcoming and is free of children.
Another item of note, at least in our building you could hear the freeway traffic from interstate 15 while outside. I think because there is a large fountain feature on the golf course the sound of the traffic is probably mitigated if you stay in the Greens building which overlooks the golf course.
Unfortunately, the impact of the group continued. The last night we were woken at midnight by a large group partying in the Vista building courtyard. It took three calls to reception and three attempts by security and almost 2 hours to get them to disband.
I can't say enough about the staff. Every single staff person we either interacted with or crossed paths with took the extra step to make sure are needs were being met to the best of their ability.
Would we stay there again? Probably not, unless we were assured there were no large groups in house as they get priority. I understand that and we all have a choice of where we are most comfortable.
