“Beautiful, right on the beach!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 5, 2013

The navy lodge on North Island is new, clean, quiet. The front desk staff are professional, polite, informed, and very helpful. Best of all it is right on a beautiful beach! The beach is clean and quiet and not crowded. It has areas for parties and seating. There is a roof garden with fantastic views! Very nice, well appointed rooms. Last, but not least, the best price ever!

Room Tip: You can call as early as January for next year.

Initially, I made reservations for 2 rooms via central reservations (one regular room w/2 single beds and one VIP suite) with understanding that the rooms were on the building by the beach. Boy! was I wrong. All the rooms were in old buildings by the warehouses. The room w/ 2 single bed had no AC, only ceiling fan that did not cool the room down not a bit and the TV did not work. The VIP suite was ok and w/ AC....the buildings are not well maintained. We were welcomed by a big cockroach at the doorway of VIP suite. With a friend's help, I was able to get a DV room after being told that there is AC in the room. Again, another disappointment, to my surprise the DV room did not have AC. What was interesting was that the VIP suite was much better than the DV room, go figure! Needless to say, I ended up with 3 rooms and completely vacated the 2-single beds room, no refund of course. Apparently, the Navy Lodge (building 1401-A) by the beach and the old Navy Lodge (building 1500) are being managed by completely different entities. FYI, Navy Lodge by the beach- (619) 435-0191; Old Navy Lodge buildings- (619) 545-9551. Do not trust the central reservations!

Room Tip: FYI, Navy Lodge by the beach- (619) 435-0191; Old Navy Lodge buildings- (619) 545-9551. Do not trust...

This is a nice place. There is an older section without elevators and the new building with elevators. The rooms have balconies, but not all rooms are facing the beautiful beach. There is a pool available for children, water level is low enough for children.

The breakfast deal is handled very poorly. Long lines, one toaster available for hundreds of people. With some desire to make this work to the advantage of the guest, the situation could be much better without any more money, just common sense, such as buying another toaster.

The other unpleasant experience was getting the room. You have to wait even though rooms are available and there is some unnecessary power play going on. This part could be much more professional.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view and at least the second floor.

We stayed here in order to attend a Navy graduation and ended up blown away at how nice this place was. Our expectations were low after staying at a Navy Lodge near Chicago which wasn't bad but basic. The beach in front of the hotel was just gorgeous. If you aren't a beach kind of person they have a nice large pool in the center of the complex.

The rooms are clean and modern. The only thing I can ding the hotel on was the breakfast. There was nowhere to sit because it was so busy and also there were not too many food choices.

Despite this the hotel is still a mind bogglingly amazing deal.

Room Tip: Ground floor rooms facing the pool have patios with chairs

How can you beat less than $100 a night right on the beach? You cant. Rooms were very clean. The staff was amazing. They had lemonade, popcorn, and pastries in the evening. The only downside is the demand for breakfast outstrips the supply. Not enough toasters, waffle irons, places to sit etc.

This is located on North Island Naval Station and is without doubt the best Navy Lodge we have ever stayed at. Great perk that is available to retired military people. Building was very nice, clean, huge airy lobby, good Continental breakfast and well attended area, great room that was very clean! Beautiful beach overlooking the end of San Diego Harbor and south into Mexico. Staff was outstanding from the reception desk to housekeeping to breakfast area. Will definitely stay here again when in San Diego!

Loved, loved, loved it here! I shopped and shopped around and this was, without a doubt, the best deal for us (traveling during Spring Break). The Navy has done a great job with this place. I feel so fortunate our family is able to take advantage of this perk!

Pros- Everything! Location is excellent to places/activities all around to explore. (We usually prefer a hotel that isn't downtown, etc....so if you do, this place might not be for you. You are going to need a vehicle. However, it has the usual base amenities there.) Speaking of vehicles, if you rent a car like we did- have your ID and your vehicle rental information out for the gate guards.

There is also a little store/souvenir shop adjacent to the lobby. Has things like T-shirts, milk, grilling supplies, etc. Very handy. :-)
The grounds were very, very nice. (See my pics) Playground, beach, covered places to sit on the beach, pool (although closed when we were there- probably too cold to swim in March), lobby, etc.

Room- We had a room with a queen bed and bunk beds. The only thing that would make this perfect is if the kids had a completely separate sleeping area (lock out room), but still- nice, clean room which was also nicely decorated. Fully stocked kitchen that is pretty big, especially for a hotel room. Bed was comfortable too and the kids liked the bunk beds as well. Everything was clean, clean, clean!

Breakfast- FREE! It was standard continental fare, but enough to fill you up and get you going for the day. There were a few little glitches like the toasters not working properly and coffee was always out and a line waiting for it. However, they finally figured it out and brought in big field canisters full of coffee which solved the problem...hahaha! The sweet lady, bless her heart, she was hopping keeping everything stocked, but she did it!

Since this is a military lodging facility- I will add to always ask for military discounts wherever you go! Several activities we did while in San Diego have them and gladly honor them.
